Update on accident Northeast of Adrian 2/12/13

 Missouri State Highway Patrol along with Bates County Sheriff Department responded around 9:30 pm last night February 11th,2013 to a 2 vehicle rollover accident Northeast of Adrian a BB Highway .25 miles from County Road NE 12004.

 The accident happened when The 2002 Ford Taurus driven by Mary J. Graham 77, of Urich Missouri was traveling East bound and Crested a hill the same time as the 2001 Dodge 1500 driven by George A. Warren 23, of Butler Missouri was traveling West bound and the vehicles collided. Both were wearing seat belts and both vehicles received extensive damage. 

 Graham was taken by private vehicle to Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton with moderate injuries. Warren was not injured. The wreck was investigated by Bates County Sheriff and Trooper D.A. Jones and Trooper B.R. Dodson.

Hume News

     Tim and Lena Norbury attended the wedding of the daughter and new son-in-law Lori and Don Ostrander in Blue Springs, Missouri on February 2.  The ceremony was performed by her Lori’s brother, Eric Norbury.  Others who enjoyed the beautiful wedding were Marsha Casey, Erin Armentrout, Ed and Diane Sneed.  Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Ostrander.

     Virginia Durbin, Karen Irwin and Marissa Lantsberger celebrated Wilma Sullivan’s 89^th birthday on Friday, February 8 at the Prescott Nursing Home.  Others who enjoyed cake were Eustrus Barnes and Lois Bowman.

      Rita Murray celebrated her 93^rd birthday at the Pizza Hut in Butler, MO on Sunday, February 10.  Those attending were:  Norann Brooks, Mildred Bell, Helen and David Owens, Frank and Barby Brooks, Sherry Searing, Colton, Harper and Bayley, Denise and Brad Steuck, Kolby, Blake and Dallie, Wesley and Misty Brooks, Issac, Taylor and Garrett, Melody and Jeff Wikoff, Sara, Kelsi, Braxton and Zack White, Janine Castillo, Tom and Carrie Sutcliffe, Derek, Megan and Tommy, Troy and Melissa Burns, and Becky Keith.

     Congratulations to the Lady Hornets on winning Conference Champs and to the Hume Hornet Boys team on winning consolation.  Great job!

      The third grade Hume Hornets won 2^nd place at their Butler tournament last Saturday.

      Hume United Methodist Church News:  The annual Valentine’s Sweetheart dinner was held on Sunday, December 10 with a delicious supper of Broasted chicken, mashed potatoes and grave, corn, salad and ice cream for dessert.  The Methodist Men did a great job once again preparing the meal.  The entertainment for the evening was the “Backwoods Kuzins” from Lamar, MO., a wonderful evening of fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all.

      The Hume community choir is practicing every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the music room at the Hume School.  If you enjoy singing, please join us as we prepare for an Easter concert.

Rollover Accident Northeast of Adrian

  Bates County EMS, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Adrian Fire/ Rescue is in route to a reported 2 car roll over accident near BB Highway Northeast of Adrian. There was a report of No Injures and they are not blocking the roadway the 2 vehicles struck doors.Please use caution when traveling in this area. Bates County Live will update this story when more information becomes available...

ST. PATRICK'S ANNUAL FISH FRY

The St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Butler will host one of 3 fish fries to be held in February and March.

The first fry will be held on February 22^nd at the church on Nursery Street in Butler. The cost is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 6-12 and kids under 5 years

old will eat free. It’s all you can eat , complete with all the sides… all donations are welcome… just come an enjoy the February Fish Fry at the Catholic Church in

Butler. March Fish Fries will be on March 8^th and again March 22^nd. Serving from 5 pm to 7 pm.

DAV meeting reminder for February 2013.

 The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter #67 of Butler, Missouri invites
all the Disabled Veterans to attend there monthly meeting. The Chapter meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 1pm at the Bates County Museum  located on Elks Drive in Butler. Goodbye Sam's Highway Hamburger

In the not so distant past Saturday night cruising would have included a stop at Harry's Dari King or Sam's Hi-way Hamburger for a scene right out of American Graffiti. The demise of Harry's was  met several years ago leaving Sam's the lone proprietor on the strip offering broasted chicken, fresh grilled burgers and suzy-Q's that to this day, draw folks in from miles around.

Sam's Hi-way Hamburger, the brainchild of Sam and Rosie Anderson was opened in 1962 and run by the couple for 27 years until being taken over by Sam's niece, Susie Stubbs, who has been at the helm since 1989.

The allure of Sam's brightly lit sign often beckoned those who just finished a movie at the Sky Vue drive in or a date at the skating rink. Maybe it was just friends out cruising who caved to the temptations of delicious smells that radiate from the tiny building. Talk to most anyone who has spent some time in Bates County and they'll tell you something they remember about Sam's. But soon, that's all it will be- memories.

The exact reason is unknown, but it doesn't matter. Sam's is closing today and will shut down the grill forever on February 11th 2013 So long to suicide cokes, suzy's made with a hand drill and someone calling your name though a crank out window- things that may sound strange to some, but to most of us it's just part of our fond memories.

Goodbye to a true American, hometown business. We salute you, Sam's. Thank you for EVERYTHING
