Weather Update: Severe Weather Risk Later Today/ Early Tomorrow Morning

A cold front will move into the area today, with thunderstorms expected later this afternoon and overnight. While we're not expecting widespread severe weather, some of this activity could produce strong winds, large hail, and the potential for 1" to 2" of rain in some areas. As a result, much of the region is under a SLIGHT risk for severe storms into Friday morning.

We'll keep you updated as the day goes on, but please help us spread the message of the thunderstorm risk later today.

Bates County People 4 People Coalition
September 17, 2013

The Bates County People 4 People Coalition meeting was held Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at the Bates County Health Center.

Present: Deborah Kirk, Vicki Kershner, Jody Welston

Following a discussion regarding the lack of response from the high importance email sent out to all individuals who previously attended a coalition meeting as well as an article in the local paper, it was unanimously decided that the Bates County People 4 People Coalition will formally disband due to lack of participation.

Deborah Kirk will ensure that any remaining funds from the $5000.00 mini-grant from ACT-Missouri are returned as Pathways was the entity that held these funds for the coalition. Jennifer Schaller advised Vicki Kershner that there was also $151.00 from a fundraising event that has never been used. According to the by-laws, any holdings are to be donated to a non-profit purpose within the territory of Bates County People 4 People, as agreed upon by a majority of the remaining members. Those present agreed that these funds should go to the Christmas for Kids project which was one of the projects the coalition sponsored in 2012. Vicki Kershner will ensure that these funds are received from Jennifer and held at West Central Community Action Agency and will be used as indicated.

It is with deep regret that this coalition was not supported and was forced to disband.

Harrisonville Police Department launches program to provide anonymous tips

The Harrisonville Police Department has launched tip411, an internet-based tool that enables the public to text message an anonymous tip to police, and lets the police respond back creating a two-way anonymous "chat."

Anyone with a cell phone can now send an anonymous tip to the Harrisonville Police Department by texting the word HPDMOTIP and tip information to 847411 (tip411). There is also an app that can be dowloaded to your smart phone - search HPDMOTIP.

Anonymous web tips can also be submitted right from the police department website at www.ci.harrisonville.mo.us

Reserved exclusively for public safety purposes and powered by CitizenObserver, a St. Paul, MN company, tip411 puts a powerful new crime fighting tool into the hands of our community.

Butler City Council News 9/17/13

In Butler City Council news, the Planning Commission gave the ok to rezoning the American Legion building from R-r to C-2, and it now goes to a public meeting October 15th before the City Council acts on it. Connie White, who has used it for years as her dance studio, plans to purchase the building from the American Legion, provided the rezoning passes. That meeting will be Tuesday, October 15th, at the City Council meeting.

The Council decided to reduce the tax lien on a property Mary Welston bought as delinquent property. The Tax lien had been over six thousand dollars, with almost five hundred dollars more as interest charges. The Council reduced the amount to two thousand dollars.

The Park and Recreation Commission met recently but didn’t have a quorum, so no action could be taken, but they agreed with Colin Lanyon, who had noted that repair of the Skate Board Park with cold mix asphalt actually made the problem worse. The Council agreed that the job needs to be cemented, but the money is not in the current budget. They’ll be checking for when money would be available for that job.

The Airport need for runway cross-drains and a seal coat is on hold because the bid from Vance Brothers was about twice the estimated cost by Burns and McDonnell engineers. Another bid will be allowed in January.

Mayor Don Malan has sent a letter of thanks to the Scoular Company in Adrian for its donation of a “Grain Wall” to the Butler Fire Department. The wall is designed to be used in rescue situations in grain
facilities. Persons have been known to sing into the grain when working inside a storage, and this donation is much appreciated.

And you’re invited to a retirement reception for Sharon Jones at City Hall on Friday,September 27th from one until three p.m. Sharon is retiring after thirty years of service for the City as a Utility Clerk
