Missouri State Highway Patrol Press Release: Please Drive Safely During Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists that many Missourians will travel over the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. This will change traffic patterns and requires everyone to be a courteous, safe driver. If you will be traveling this holiday, please make sure your car is in good condition before beginning your trip. It is also important that you are well rested before you start driving. Remember to buckle up -- seat belts save lives!

The Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. As part of this operation, all available officers will be assigned to Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to drunk driving, speeding, and seat belt/child restraint use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed.

Over the past several years, the Patrol has used special traffic enforcement projects to further their efforts to decrease traffic crashes and fatalities. This Thanksgiving weekend will include such an enforcement project, a 20-Mile Trooper operation. Troopers will be assigned at 20-mile intervals along Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, as well as U.S. Highways 60 and 61.

The counting period for the 2013 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013. During the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, six persons were killed and another 434 were injured in 1,208 traffic crashes. That means traffic crashes killed or injured one person every 13.9 minutes in Missouri over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

“It's important that everyone arrive at their Thanksgiving destination safely," said Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. "Please obey all traffic laws, wear your seat belt, and pay attention to the job of driving--that text or cell phone call can wait. If alcohol is part of your plan, don’t drink and drive. On behalf of the employees of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, I wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.”

The Highway Patrol’s Emergency Assistance number is 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). Motorists should use this emergency assistance number to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways. When you dial this number anywhere in the state, it rings directly into the closest Patrol headquarters.

Of course, no matter how safely you drive, you can’t control other drivers. Thus, the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Click It 4 Life!

Hume News

The community of Hume wishes to extend their sympathy to the family of Fannie Edmonson of Butler, MO. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Mrs. Edmonson’s daughter is Brenda Cannon of Hume. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The Hume United Methodist Church will host a weenie roast and hayride for young and old alike on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to share in the fun, food and fellowship.

This year the Hume School is trying to incorporate the character plus, program, school wide goals and community in changing up the student Christmas gift exchange. They are trying to promote in the students the idea of giving is better than receiving.

Therefore, this year the students will be participating in a program where they will adopt a solder overseas. Solders are giving up their Christmas to help protect us and keep us safe. So, they are asking that the money that would be spent on a classroom gift exchange be spent on a care package for a solder instead. They ask that each child bring the item or items they wish to send. The school will take care of the packing and shipping.

The school would like to invite any student, family, or community organization to participate. This idea of adopting a soldier program is open to anyone not just a Hume elementary student.

Examples of items include: Lots of snack items especially in small packages as they can put them in their pockets when they go out, such as nuts, trail mix, etc. Jerky and slim Jims, socks, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, soap, toothpaste, lotions. (They like to use the body wash that is also shampoo), paperback books, movies on DVD, puzzle books, Microwave bowls of soup, ravioli, microwave meals, popcorn, gum, hard candy, cookies, peanut butter crackers, cheese cracker. The crackers and cookies need to be in their boxes because loose ones will crumble in the shipment.

The items need to be at the Hume School by Monday, November 25. If you have any questions please contact any elementary teacher of any school administration.

Bates County Sheriff's Office Press Release: Rural Pursuit Ends In Foot Chase

On Sunday, November 11, 2013, Deputies were called to assist the Missouri State Highway Patrol after a vehicle had fled from a vehicle stop. The pursuit began northwest of Butler and ended just north of 52 in area known as Coleman’s Junk Yard. The vehicle found parked outside one of the trailers was abandoned. The owner of the vehicle was located at that residence but was not the driver of the vehicle. The driver had fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Additional Deputies were called in an attempt to search for the subject. Bates County K9 Lecter hand several deputies searched on foot for a couple of hours. The subject was not located in the area and the search was called off. Attempts were made by Deputies to notify area residents.

We believe that the subject knew the area since he drove the vehicle to the owner’s house and was comfortable with the hiding place he was at. The owner of the vehicle claims to have just met the subject that borrowed his truck. The owner of the truck was arrested and transported to jail for questioning on an unrelated burglary.
