Seven-Hour Standoff in Benton County

Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and Benton County sheriff's deputies arrested a man who surrendered after a seven-hour standoff about 5 p.m. Thursday.   The standoff started about 10 a.m. after deputies went to a home east of Warsaw near the state fish hatchery to investigate reports of shots being fired during a domestic dispute.

Sheriff Rick Fajen says Mark Lomax, 48, refused to come out of the home.  Deputies feared Lomax might have had a hostage, and say he made threats to harm others, so the sheriff asked for help from the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Special Response Team.  Officers surrounded the home and tried to get Lomax to surrender.

At one point, the SRT moved close to the house to try to use teargas to get Lomax out.  When they heard shots in the home, they backed away.   Fajen said Lomax finally surrendered and no one was harmed.

Lomax faces charges of domestic assault and armed criminal action.  Fajen said his bond is set at $100,000.

Adrian Fire Department 911 Ceremony

Patriot Day falls on September 11th and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of September 11th 2001. Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day that four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A large majority of those lives lost, were after the attacks on the Twin Towers. They were working at or above the points of collision, and thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, suddenly found themselves stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number of them made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than to wait and be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse.

In the wake of the World Trade Center collisions, many brave men and women from the emergency services risked their lives to try and help rescue victims of the attacks, and of them 411 lost their own lives attempting to fight fires and rescue people.

On September 11th, 2014 The Adrian Fire Department will be conducting a remembrance ceremony for those lives lost during the brutal attacks that were done for nothing more than to hurt and destroy us. During this ceremony we will recognize our veterans and the brave men and women who are defending our country today all in the name of FREEDOM! Nothing is free and nobody understands that better than the men and women of our United States Military. Freedom is so much more than a word. It is a right that thousands of men and women have defended for years so we as Americans can remain free and have choice. The American Soldier still presses on today and they are willing to die for our country and defend us to the end. Saying thank you to them just seems so little. But also seems so right!
