Miami FCCLA Hosts Amsterdam Friendship Club

During the month of December, the Miami R-1 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America student organization sponsored the annual Decorate the Door Contest. This year’s theme was “Walking In a Winter Wonderland”. 

The Amsterdam Friendship Club was invited to judge Miami’s display creativity. Seniors Sammy Sendejas, Jaclyn Crawford, and Caitlin Slattery escorted the ladies to view each door. After selecting the winning door, the Friendship Club attended a tea given by the FCCLA.

The winner of the Decorate the Door Contest was the Preschool and its teacher, Mrs. Lynn Bagby. The students stamped their footprints on a white paper door covering to represent footprints in the snow. On Friday, December 19, the Preschool received donuts and hot cocoa for their efforts.

UPDATED Obituary - Elenora Lorraine Jundy Crawford

Elenora Lorraine Jundy Crawford was born August 12, 1919, the daughter of Ray and Hattie Brown Jundy. She was called home to be with the Lord on December 16, 2014, at her home in Amsterdam, Missouri.

Elenora, one of six children, was born and raised in Amsterdam. She attended the Amsterdam School, graduating in 1937. She was united in marriage to Harvey Morton Crawford on September 14, 1938, and to this union three daughters, Janet, Donna, and Karen, were born.

From an early age Elenora developed a love of sports. From playing basketball herself, to eventually coaching the girls team at Amsterdam High School. This, back in the time when the games were still played outside and on the concrete.
Elenora worked many a job in her lifetime. She was employed by Bendix in KC, drove a school bus and was a cook for the Miami School district, and also worked for the IRS for a period of time. But Elenora found her home when she took a position working for Bass Busters in 1959. She retired from Bass Busters after 21 years of service in 1981.

Elenora loved her church and her community. She took great pride in being one of the founding members of the Amsterdam Jubilee, and she gave endless hours of her time to plan and organize it yearly. A major honor and highlight for Elenora was just this past September when she was made Grand Marshall of the Jubilee. She led that parade smiling from ear to ear, waving and blowing kisses to the crowd along the way. Elenora was very involved with the Amsterdam Methodist Church, where she has been a member for the majority of her life. She was also an active member of the Amsterdam Friendship Club, where she never missed an opportunity to help others and serve those around her.

The thing that meant the most of all to Elenora was family. Her and Harvey spent endless hours and miles in a vehicle headed to Pomme de Terre Lake, high school rodeos, various sporting events, and countless birthday parties and celebrations. They did their best to cheer on and support their kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great- grandkids in all that they did. Holidays at their home were filled with family, food, laughs, and many wonderful memories.

Elenora is survived by her three daughters: Janet Burch and husband Robert of Adrian; Donna Booth and husband Wendell of Wheatland; and Karen Grimsley of Amoret, 2 sisters-in-law, 9 Grandkids, 20 Great-Grandkids, and 2 Great-Great-Grandkids, and various nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her five siblings, her beloved husband of 67 years Harvey, son-in-law Gary Grimsley, and a Great-Grandson Blane; as well as a granddaughter by marriage, Connie Booth.

Weather Update: Accumulating Snow expected tonight

Snow is expected tonight with amounts generally in the 1 to 3 inch range over western Missouri and extreme eastern Kansas. Amounts may be higher further west toward Topeka. We're expecting snow to start falling late Wednesday evening with most of the snow falling between midnight and 6 AM. This will likely cause some issues with the Thursday morning commute, so plan a little extra time for your morning drive.

Make Sure Your New Year Begins Safely

It’s time to welcome 2015! Many Missourians plan special gatherings to bring in the New Year. The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages everyone to make good decisions regarding their New Year’s celebration. A traffic crash would be an unfortunate way to begin 2015.

This year’s 102-hour counting period will be from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015. Last year over the New Year’s 30-hour holiday counting period, there were 380 traffic crashes, which injured 147 people. There were no fatalities during the 2014 New Year’s holiday counting period.

If you’re driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. As you make your way to the party, be a courteous driver. When in doubt, yield the right-of-way. Pay attention and use your turn signal to communicate your intentions to other drivers. The posted speed limit is chosen for a reason. There’s no reason to speed—the party starts after you arrive safely.

UPDATE: Flue Fire this morning in Rich Hill

On 12/16/2014 at approx 9:19 am, the Rich Hill Fire Dept was dispatched to 209 W Olive for a flue fire. Upon arrival, fire crews quickly extinguished the flue fire and checked for extension of fire in the attic. It was called under control by 9:41 am and units were cleared from the scene by 9:46 am.
