Down Go the Houses…Finally

BUTLER, Mo – A collective cheer went up at the Butler City Council Meeting Tuesday evening as the report of a total of 9 houses has now been demolished. After several years of working through all the red tape and dealing with different agencies, it was welcome news to the Council.

Susan Anderson and Myrtle Patrick asked permission to hold a 5k run for the Butler Saddle Club instead of a parade. Anderson informed Council the Saddle Club gave the Bates County Memorial Hospital proceeds of $2,000 last year which will be used for the free mammogram program at the hospital. Council approved the request and the Butler Police Department was given a copy of the route of the walk/run or ride which will take place on Saturday, June 20th beginning at the Butler Fair Grounds.

Josh Hagberg, Butler Alumni President came before Council to ask permission for the alumni parade this Saturday, May 23rd. When asked, Butler Police Chief Randy Beshore said all he could do would be to post it, the Department likes at least 2 weeks before an event to line up the personnel to work the parade.

Casey Koehn, Butler City Administrator told Council that she and Elizabeth Ogg, Bates County Economic Developer, held a conference call with MC Power regarding the two signs currently on the highway but not being used to our advantage. She presented two preliminary drawings regarding the signs but nothing has been decided and she would update at a later time.

Brad Vermaas, representing First Baptist Church asked permission to use part of the Butler Fair Grounds to shoot an upcoming drama film. It will be close to the brush pile and a walk through will be on May 30th and the filming itself will be on Saturday, June 6th. He also informed Council that they would be shooting a gun loaded with blanks during the filming and wanted everyone to know this in case anyone became alarmed. Chief Beshore said he would let his department know what was happening but since it was on a Saturday, no children playing ball should be in the area. Councilman Vermaas also expressed his appreciation to the Police and Electric Department for their quick response when a 70 foot tree fell on a neighbor’s property.

Butler Police Department applied and received a $1,000 grant from Enbridge Pipeline.

Gas Prices increase nationwide, but in Missouri they are below national average

Gasoline prices are on the rise nationwide, but Missouri is below the national average.

Gas prices have increased nationwide, but Missouri is still below the national average of $2.71 per gallon. In Missouri, the average price is $2.44 per gallon.

Missouri AAA Spokesman Mike Right said experts say gas prices will still remain lower than last year.

“We’ve seen an up-tick in gasoline prices in the last few days, but we’re basically going to enjoy gasoline prices that are noticeable below what they were this same time last year,” said Right. “In most instances, it will be at least 80 cents a gallon less than what we paid in 2014.”

Right said consumers should be saving more on gasoline compared to years past.
“A family should be saving somewhere in the neighborhood of about $600 on their gasoline bill this year compared to what they spent last year,” said Right.
Right offers an explanation of why gas prices increase around this time of year.
“Typically, we pay the highest price for gasoline during the month of May and then we see some moderation as we get into June and July and it remains fairly steady throughout the summer drive season,” said Right. “Much of the ramp up in cost associated with the month of May has to do with the change over from winter fuel to summer fuel and the refineries beginning to get back online after some shut downs for maintenance.”
