Jim was born September 24, 1931 in rural Bates County, where he attended Cumpton School until the eighth grade and then graduated from Appleton City High School in 1949.

Evidence of his skill and devotion to quality craftsmanship remain on display in the many homes he constructed in the local area. Jim further enjoyed building, repairing, and repurposing anything made of wood, especially cabinets.
