Grey skies didn't hamper turnout as the 2016 Bates County Fair kicked off this evening. A stroll around revealed a growing number of entries on display in the Fair Building and plenty to see and do outside, too.

Eagles finish as Summer League Champs

The Miami Eagles Summer baseball season came to a close tonight with a win against the Adrian Blackhawks 5-3, making them the top finishers in the league. At right, Cauy Urton receives his medal from coach Aaron Muller.

Update: Belton man charged with assault on Law Enforcement Officer after Benton County standoff

On the afternoon of July 11, 2016, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a check the well being of an individual in Southwestern Benton County. 

Benton County Deputies arrived assisted by members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. 

Authorities had been advised that the subject had a firearm in the residence and took precautionary measures upon arrival. 

Contact was made by phone at which time the subject made threats of shooting officers if they approached the residence. 

Approximately three hours into the standoff, the subject fired at law enforcement through a sliding glass door. Less than an hour later, the subject surrendered without incident.” 
 
Robert Lee Foss of Belton was arrested and charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Armed Criminal Action. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

Michael G. "Mike" Wrigley of Independence, Missouri formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri departed this life on Sunday, July 10, 2016 in Independence.

Final arrangements entrusted to Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Obituary - Gerald “Lou” Lewis

Gerald “Lou” Lewis , age 76 formerly of Butler passed away on April 28, 2016 in Arizona.
 

Lou is survived by his wife Linda of Arizona; two children, Jayme and Stephen and 7 grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Gertrude Lewis and brother Lyle Lewis.

Graveside memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 15 at the Fairview Cemetery.
