Smoke alarm at Bates County Memorial Hospital

The Butler Fire Department is in route to the Bates County Memorial Hospital located at 615 West Nursery Street on a report of a smoke alarm going off on the 2nd floor in the charting room of the hospital.

Nurses on the floor reported the smell of what was thought to be electrical wires burning.

Trailer house fire in Spruce area

Several fire departments along with the Bates County Sheriff Office are on scene of a trailer house fire at 14032 NE County Road 2604 in the Spruce area of Bates County.

The trailer house is said to be fully engulfed in flames at this time and no one is in the home except for pets.

Obituary - Christopher W. Ensell

Christopher W. Ensell
Christopher W. Ensell, 32 of Belton, Missouri passed away November 5, 2016 at his home in Belton. Cremation with memorial services 11:00 am Saturday November 12, 2016 at Belton Christian Church in Belton. 

A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to services also at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Messages of condolence may be left for the family atwww.mullinaxfuneralhome.com

Chris Ensell was born January 3, 1984 in Olympia WA to Terry B. Ensell and Jodi Rae Gentry. He served in the US Navy following High School. Chris worked for VIN Solutions in Shawnee Mission, KS. He was united in marriage to Jennifer Turnbull in 2012. Chris was preceded in death by his brother Blaine Ensell, step-father Burl Gentry, and grandfather Frank B. Ensell. Chris is survived by his wife of 4 years Jennifer Ensell of Belton, MO, two children, Amy and Hannah Ensell, father Terry B. Ensell, mother Jodi Rae Gentry, brother John Ensell-Ansbro all of WA, Uncle Doug Irby of TX, step-siblings, Sara Gentry, Daniel Gentry, and Jacquelin Gentry, grandparents, Bill and Barbara Ward along with many extended family members and friends.

A special Story Hour today...

The Museum was thrilled to host the Butler Public Library's Story Hour this week as Museum Director, Peggy Buhr read "I Am Rosa Parks" by Brad Meltzer to the group. Following the reading, the group toured the museum and then enjoyed crafts. 

Obituary - Billie “Jean” Whitchurch

Billie “Jean” Whitchurch, age 76, passed away November 9, 2016 at Golden Living Center-Westwood in Clinton, Missouri. Her wishes were to be cremated. Services will be at a later date. Jean was born on September 21, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to William Bedford Boone and Roberta Hazel Swallow. She graduated from high school, completed two years of college, and worked as an RN for many years. Jean loved spending time with family. She was a Harry Potter and Star Wars fanatic. She enjoyed adult coloring books, loved her Bible study group, and loved to cook and sew.

Among survivors are her three daughters; Roberta A. (Manny) Oropeza of Clinton, Missouri, Lydia (John) Dalton of Appleton City, Missouri, and Shelley (Tim) Elliott of Deepwater, Missouri, two sisters; Barbara Eastwood of Boulder Colorado, and Cheryl Suazo of Boulder Colorado, 12 grandchildren; Virgil, Justin, Nick, Kelley, Kyle, Matthew, Brandon, Autumn, Dakota, Danielle, Whitney, and Lacey, 13 great-grandchildren; Truman, Gavin, Madelynn, Gabriela, Daniel, Karolyne, Thomas, Loralai, Shooter, Stella, Skyler, Luke, and Lane, and a niece; Emily.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and great-grandaughter Kimber.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, Missouri.

Barbara Jean (Mullins) Kasper
Barbara Jean (Mullins) Kasper, age 84 years, of Clinton, Missouri passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at her home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, November 11, 2016 at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri.

Barbara will lie in state from 12pm-5pm Thursday, November 10th at the Vansant-Mills Chapel. The family requests memorial contributions to be made to either Twin Lakes Hospice, Clinton Christian Church, or the American Cancer Society. Barbara was born in Syracuse, Missouri. She graduated from high school and was later united in marriage to Lloyd Kelley Kasper. She worked on the family farm, and served as a bookkeeper for a lumber yard in Warsaw, as well as the Clinton and Harrisonville School districts for many years. She loved her flowers, enjoyed sewing and played Bridge on Thursday mornings. She was a member of the Clinton Christian Church.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; Cleo Franklin Mullins and Mary Letitia Birch, brothers; Ronald Mullins and infant brother, and an infant sister; Susan Elaine Mullins.

Among survivors are her husband; Lloyd of the home, sons; Lloyd Jr and Kenneth (Vivian) Kasper of rural Windsor, Missouri, sister; Gwendolyn Cox of Fortuna, Missouri, grandchildren; Tim Bigler and Joshua Bigler, and great grandchildren; Haley, Allison, and Emma.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, Missouri.

Lest we forget: Veteran's Day activities this Friday

Veteran's Day is this Friday- you can help to honor the occasion by attending one of the many events going on around the county:


The Drexel High School Student Council will hold a Veteran’s Day Assembly to honor all of those serving or who have served in the armed forces on Friday, November 11th. The school welcomes all veterans to participate in the assembly. Coffee and donuts will be served from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. in the north commons, with an assembly to follow in the north gymnasium.

Miami R-1 School District will be hosting a Veterans’ Day Celebration on Nov.11 at 11 a.m. in the high school gym. All area residents are encouraged to participate in honor of our veterans. Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America will serve refreshments to the veterans in the library from 10 a.m. until the beginning of the ceremony. FFA student officials will escort the veterans to the refreshments and ceremony.


Miami’s guest speaker will be Retired Colonel Teddy Dwight Bitner. He is a graduate of the Miami-R1 School District and University of Central Missouri. Upon graduating from UCM, Colonel Bitner was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He has had a 26 year career with assignments in Korea, Germany, Italy, and the U.S. His combat assignments included Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia, and Operation Desert Thunder. Colonel Bitner served in various positions in the Army Airborne Corps.

Please come and celebrate our nation’s heroes with the Miami students on November 11 at 11 a.m. in the gym. Everyone is welcome.

As every year, the Veteran's Day Ceremony will be held on the Butler square at 10:45 am. The ceremony, expected to last about 30 minutes, will be held at the memorial on the northwest corner of the square.

Ballard School Veterans Day program will be held at 1:30 pm in the school gym, followed by a reception in the commons area. Please wear your Red, White and Blue!

Max Motors will be hosting a Veterans Day Chili Cook Off. Starting at 10:45 on Nov. 11th come out and sample great chili. If you would like to be in the chili cook off call Josh Griffin at 660-679-6567.Everyone is invited out to hear some great music and eat some good chili. All to honor veterans in our local community.

Archie Schools will be hosting the annual Veterans Day breakfast starting at 7:30 am, followed by a short assembly in the Dome at 8:30 to honor our guests.
