Helen Louise (Stouffer) Hughes
Helen Louise (Stouffer) Hughes, 93 years, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will be at Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Missouri. 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Leukemia Society and may be left in care of the funeral home. Fond memories and condolences can be left online at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com.

Helen was born on December 7, 1922 in Butler, Missouri to Clifford Buford Stouffer and Ola Mae Cumpton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton where she sang in the Spirit Lifters choir. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Mid-Day Optimist Club. Helen enjoyed painting and ceramics.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Forrest Hughes, one brother and one sister.

Among survivors are her son; Robert “Bob” Hughes (Sheryl Rayburn) of Windsor, Missouri, two grandchildren; Cassie Hughes of Clinton, Missouri and Michele Braswell and family of Absarokee, Montana, a nephew; Mike Stouffer (Chris) and a niece; Sherry Stouffer both of Overland Park, Kansas.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.

Patricia "Pat" Stapleton 78 of Creighton, Missouri departed this life on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Stapleton of the home; three daughters, Debbie Journey, Montrose, Missouri, Cheryl Santanen and husband Cliff, Clinton, Missouri, Susie Hastings and husband Eric, Adrian, Missouri; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Green and wife DeeDee and a sister, Norma McDowell all of Independence, Missouri.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Creighton Baptist Church, Creighton, Missouri.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Creighton Baptist Church, Creighton, Missouri.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Creighton Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Final arrangements entrusted to Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri.

Wayne Eugene Krosch, 78, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Monday, November 28, 2016 Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville. 

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca, Minnesota, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Teresa L. Sword
Teresa L. Sword, 51 of Hume, Missouri passed away December 1, 2016 at Freeman Hospital-West in Joplin. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Hume Christian Church in Hume, Missouri. There is no visitation. Interment will follow in East Liberty Cemetery.

Teresa Le (Long) Sword was born July 8, 1965 in Ontario, Oregon, daughter of Richard Allen and Esther (Johnston) Long.

Teresa graduated high school in 1983 and toured through England, Holland and Germany with the Continental Singers. She graduated from Evangel College with the dual degree of a B.S. in Music Education and Church Music. While in college she enlisted in the Army National Guard Band and was their first chair flute player.

Teresa married Vern Sword on June 27, 1992. She taught 23 years in Missouri public schools. At the time of her passing she was teaching music at Fort Scott Community College. Teresa was proud to be a member of the Red Hatters of Hume, and she also loved being a member of the Bates County Career Women and was honored to be selected as their 2016 Woman of the Year. She was also a former director of the Community Council for the Performing Arts in Nevada, Missouri.

Teresa served as director of music for Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada. When she went to be with Jesus she was director of music at Ohio Street United Methodist Church in Butler, Missouri.

Teresa was preceded in death by her father Richard A. Long; and grandparents Clyde and Ione Long and Earl and Eiffa Johnston. She is survived by her husband Vern Sword of Hume; mother Esther Long of Medford, Oregon; two brothers Richard D. Long of Salem, Oregon and Stanly M. Long of Medford, Oregon; two children Mike Sword of Cameron, Missouri and Misty Bogardus of Schell City, Missouri; five grandchildren Kristina, Tiffany, Crystal, Amber, and Clayton. Two great-grandchildren Abby and Lydia, and one great-grandson on the way.


Newly Elected Bates County Coroner Greg Mullinax attending training in Jefferson City

Tomorrow and Wednesday, I will attend Newly Elected training in Jefferson City hosted by the Missouri Coroners and Medical Examiners Association.

I am extremely grateful to Bates County for the chance to serve as your coroner, and will continue to stay current with each and every opportunity for training and development available to me. 

I'll be sharing what I've learned and how it will benefit Bates County.

Mr. Mullinax and all the newly elected officials will be sworn in at the Bates County Courthouse on December 30th at 2pm.

Obituary - Barbara Moseley Thompson

Barbara Moseley Thompson
Barbara Moseley Thompson passed away December 4, 2016 at her home near Walker, Missouri surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born in Long Beach, California to Warren Morris and Bertha House Moseley on June 13, 1937. They moved to the Moseley Family Farm during her teenage years, and she attended Walker High School where she met her future husband. She married Charles Vernon Thompson of Walker, MO on June 19, 1955. Together they ran Thompson Farms and raised their family of three children.

In addition to her work on the farm, Barbara was very active and generous to her community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Nevada and gave her time to serve the church as treasurer for 20 years. She was a member of the Dianas and Chapter DW P.E.O. as well as a member of the first Hospital Auxiliary. Barbara served on the first board of the Vernon County Daycare, the Vernon County Board of the American Cancer Society and the Vernon County Youth Fair Board. 

She coordinated the Vernon County Youth Fair Royalty Event for many years and served as a 4-H leader. She was a Republican County Chairman, delegate to the Missouri State Republican Convention and County Coordinator for Senator Kit Bond. 

Barbara and her husband Charles received recognition as a Missouri State Fair Farm Family, Vernon County Chamber of Commerce Agri-business award, Missouri Conservation Award and the Missouri State Farm Management Award.

She will be greatly missed by her husband Charles, son Bob Thompson and wife Cindy, daughter Dana Cavener and husband Greg, son Brad Thompson and wife Lori as well as her brother Warren G. Moseley and wife Angela. Memories of “Mimi” will also be treasured by Grandchildren Cara Hoover (Justin), Spencer Thompson (Lauren), David Cavener (Liz), Kathryn Cavener, Margaret Cavener, Nash Smith, Daven Smith, Matthew Thompson as well as Great-Grandchildren Burkley and Avery Hoover, and Emerson and Rhett Thompson. She also had a niece, Sherry Filtz and nephew, Warren F. Moseley.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 7 from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada with Rev. Geg Ferree officiating. Private family interment will follow in Newton Burial Park.
