Butler man arrested on Vernon County Warrant

Mr. Mitchell was arrested for 1.) Felony Vernon County Sheriffs Office Warrant - Abuse or Neglect of a child.
He was booked into the Bates County Jail and placed on a $2,500 cash only bond.

Structure fire northwest of Adrian
Just before midnight, the Adrian fire department was summoned to a reported structure fire just
north of AA highway near the intersection of county roads 4001 and 16002.
Upon arrival the vacant structure was found to be fully involved; personnel worked quickly to protect a nearby shed and a propane tank.
Mutual aid was received by Central Cass, with standby from the Butler fire department.
Crews were on the scene until just after 2 am. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Obituary - Gloria Jean Johnston
Funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Urich, Missouri on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
Officiating at the mass will be Father Pete Savage.
Visitation/Rosary will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Urich, Missouri on Thursday, December 29, 2016 with visitation at 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. followed by the rosary between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be in White Oak Cemetery, Urich, Missouri.
The family requests any memorial donations be given to the American Cancer Society. These may be left at Hill & Son Funeral Home or brought to the Mass.

Gloria Jean Johnston, 72, passed away December 26, 2016 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born September 18, 1944 in Montrose, Missouri joining her brother Willard Wagner, as the second child of William Edward and Rosalie Catherine (Gunther) Wagner.
Gloria lived all of her life in the Montrose, Missouri area attending and graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic School. Following graduation she worked several years at Clearfield Cheese Company in Clinton, Missouri, later working as an aide at Glendale Gardens assisted living facility also in Clinton. She retired after 14 years of loving and dedicated care which she had provided through those many years to the residents.
Gloria was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Urich, Missouri. Her faith was visible in the kindness she showed at her workplace, the love and care in her home and the perseverance throughout her life. Gloria was blessed with one son, Russell, in her marriage to William Johnston. She loved her family and her dogs: Barney, Goose and Annie. Beside her jobs outside the home, she also was an avid gardener, enjoying both flower and vegetable gardening. She spent many hours raising, picking and canning the produce for her family. She planted and cared for as many as 100 tomato plants some years. She was a good cook as well, with fried chicken one of the most enjoyed dishes.
Preceding Gloria in death were her parents, her husbands William Erwin Johnston and Barry Gordon. Survivors include her son Russell “Rusty” Johnston and girlfriend Crissy of Clinton, Missouri; her brother Willard “Willie” Wagner of Montrose, Missouri; and two stepdaughters, Beth (Johnston) Hassler and Billie (Johnston) Huff.

Kathryn Smith, age 82, Blue Mound, Kansas passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016 at Mercy Health Center, Fort Scott. She was born on January 19, 1934 at Fort Scott, Kansas the daughter of Andrew Asel and Carrie Knisely Newman.
She graduated from La Cygne High School. She then attended Pittsburg State Teachers College, receiving a Bachelor''s in Elementary Educations. She then taught at Elsmore, Kansas for one year. She married Melvin Smith on May 25, 1956 at Jingo, Kansas.
She became a homemaker and farm wife until returning to teaching in Pleasanton, Kansas for seventeen years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Blue Mound Federated Church, Lady Lions, Lend a Hand Club, Lucky Ridgers 4H leader, charter member of the Busy Workers 4H club and was the first Linn County Fair Queen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Melvin, and sister Rozella Lewis. Kathryn is survived by two sons, Melvin Richard Smith and Michael Smith and wife Kara, daughters Malinda Conley and husband Stephen, Marilyn Duggins, and Myrna Golden and husband Greg, nine grandchildren: Stephanie, Katelyn and Pamella Conley, Meghan Duggins, Christopher Duggins and wife Kimberly, Angela McKenna, Alysha Wilson, Kodie Smith and Sara Golden, and four great grandchildren: Kiya Smith, Kieran Houlihan, Kolin Houlihan, and Jax Wilson.

Donald Stevens, age 52, Paola, Kansas formerly of La Cygne, Kansas passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2016.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 am Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the La Cygne Christian Church. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:30 to service time at the church.

A silver four door passenger car was fully engulfed in smoke and fire but was quickly put out before the fire spread.
Butler Fire Crews are still on scene at this time and we will update when more information is made available to us.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Floral Hills East Cemetery, Lee's Summit, Missouri.
Family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the funeral home.
