A little more snow, then clearing later

It appears the forecasters 'got it right' this time. Last night's prediction was that we were to get basically a dusting- which is pretty much how it turned out.

While more snow is falling now, don't expect additional accumulation to amount to much, however it may make your travels a little slower than normal.

After this band passes through, skies are going to clear somewhat, and remain quite frigid for the next few days.

Good news? Expect 40's around Tuesday and into the 50's by mid week!

Obituary - John Clay Simons, Sr.

John Clay Simons, Sr.

John Clay Simons, Sr., age 61, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 2, 2017, at the Ft. Scott Mercy Hospital Emergency Room. He was born February 5, 1955, in Santa Paula, California, the son of William Jack Simons and Welcome Irene “Becky” Floyd Simons. He honorably served with the United States Army. 

Following his military service, he was employed by Commercial Pipeline and later for Peerless Products. 

At the time of his death, he was employed as a paint line supervisor at Extrusions. Clay enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and woodworking. He also wanted to spend as much time as possible with his grandchildren. 

Survivors include his three children J. C. Simons of Ft. Scott, Lindsey Simons of Louisburg, Kansas and Jason Simons of Ruskin, Florida and two grandchildren, Dalton Jack Simons and Jordyn Victoria Julian. Also surviving is his companion Diane Kimmell, of Ft. Scott and a brother, Jack Simons of Mound City, Kansas as well as numerous cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Connie Seaboldt and Jeannie Davis.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 6th at the U. S. National Cemetery family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 9:45 AM. The family will also receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Updated Obituary - Julia Mary Gotheridge Harris

 Julia Mary Gotheridge Harris

Julia Mary Gotheridge Harris, 93, of Blue Mound, Kansas passed away January 3, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Mary was born December 25, 1923 to Daniel H. and Lulu Wilmoth (Freeland) Gotheridge at Culver, Missouri, northeast of Butler. In February 1925, at the age of one, Mary moved with her parents and two brothers to a farm north of Selma, Kansas where she lived until she married. She attended Minkler Country School through 8th grade walking a mile each morning and evening and also met the bus at the school for four more years while completing her education at Kincaid High School where she graduated in 1941. Mary met the love of her life, Warren Kenneth Harris in early 1941. They were engaged before Warren left for the Army Air Corp on October 9, 1942 to serve in World War II. 

They married on August 2, 1943 in Iola, Kansas while Warren was home on leave. Warren was sent to the European Theatre soon after their wedding and they kept in touch by daily letters across the ocean. Warren returned to his love on August 2, 1945, their second wedding anniversary. They then started their life together in a two-room apartment in Blue Mound before renting a farm with a four-room house in 1946. In 1948 they bought a 160 acre farm west of Prairie Valley School near Blue Mound. As finances allowed they progressively made improvements to their own farmstead until finally moving into a newly completed home there in 1964. Mary and Warren were blessed with two children, Dennis K. Harris on May 1, 1948 and Jacqueline Sue Harris on November 2, 1950. Warren and Mary joined Blue Mound Methodist Church together in 1949 and were charter members of the 49’ers Sunday School Class. Mary and Warren worked side by side farming, haying, raising lots of cattle, hogs, bottle calves, pigs, and lots of chickens. In turn, Warren would help Mary with housework. They enjoyed working together and were usually seen together whatever the occasion. Mary did lots of sewing for their children and numerous school projects as she was room mother for both children for several years. Mary belonged to Prairie Valley Circle and Blue Mound United Methodist Church. 

She was a stay at home mom and wife. She most enjoyed being with her husband and children. Mary also enjoyed solid walnut furniture and had several pieces which she and Warren purchased at auctions. In her later years, Mary’s hobbies included collecting dolls, dishes, quilts, and other interesting items. Mary loved to be busy. She was not an idle person. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robey and Walter; two sisters in infancy; her husband of over 68 years Warren; her beloved daughter, Jackie Harris Norris; and a great-grandson, Jaden Terry. She is survived by her son, Denny Harris of Blue Mound; granddaughter, Angela Kay Harris Terry and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Terry, Austin Terry, and Jenna Terry all of Louisburg, Kansas. Mary said, “Happiness will be being together with Warren and Jackie forever. My biggest worry will be leaving my son Denny.”

A funeral service for Mary will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Blue Mound United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sunny Slope Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Blue Mound Cemetery Improvement and Beautification Fund in care of the Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, Kansas 66056. Garden City Crisis Intervention Team responds to disturbance

On 1/2/17 Officers of the Garden City Police Department responded to reports of a disturbance involving a 30 year old man with no cloths running around and yelling in the 400 block of 10th street. 

#GCMOPD Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Officers assisted by Lake Winnebago PD contacted the man and were able to take him into custody without injury. The man was transported to Cass Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

Garden City Police Chief Thomas R. Alber implemented the CIT program in Garden City to more effectively respond to these situations The CIT program is designed to improve the way law enforcement and the community respond to people experiencing mental health crisis. They are built on strong partnerships between law enforcement, mental health provider agencies and individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Update Obituary - Gregie Olen "Buckeye" Younce

Gregie Olen "Buckeye" Younce

Gregie Olen "Buckeye" Younce, Appleton City, passed away Monday, January 2, at his home. He was 54. 

A memorial service is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, at the Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City. 

Visitation is scheduled between noon and one o'clock Saturday afternoon, January 7, at the funeral home and memorials to a fund for the family are suggested,

Gregie Olen Younce, 54, was born to Bruce and Beatrice Rose (Robinson) Younce on May 21, 1962, one of eight children. He departed this life at his home in Appleton City, Missouri on January 2, 2017.

“Buckeye” was baptized into the Christian faith at Strasburg Baptist Church in Strasburg, Missouri. He spent his younger years going back and forth from Knob Noster to Kansas City, Missouri, based upon his father’s seasonal employment in the concrete business. Gregie also learned the trade from his father, and worked in the industry for more than 35 years, until he was unable.

Unquestionably the most important thing in his life proved his family and friends. He “loved his babies and they all loved him,” was one of his favorite sayings. 

Though “Buckeye” never had any children, he treated his many nieces and nephews as his own and loved them dearly. One of his favorite activities was having parties and enjoying the company of his family, especially on the Fourth of July, where he always spent too much on fireworks. His entire family once surprised him on his birthday and had a massive barbecue and camping trip in his backyard. Another treasured pastime was his walks through Appleton and the surrounding countryside. While he never had a drivers license, by his own choice, Gregie still visited his family in Kansas by using his two feet.

Gregie was preceded in death by his parents Bruce and Beatrice; two sisters, Janice and Nancy Younce; brother Johnny Younce; nephew Kevin Younce; and sister-in-law Virginia Younce. Survivors include stepfather Forrest Salters; one sister Debra Younce; three brothers: Steve, Ricky and Raymond Younce; nephews: Johnny, Timmy, T.T., Tommy, Raymond, Jr., James, Doug, Bill, Sean and Bruce; nieces: Jenny, Sabrina, Gina, Tina, Tiffany, Samantha, Nancy, Ashley, Shelly and all of their babies; numerous cousins, family members and friends who meant the world to him.

Snow Tonight Through Tomorrow Morning

Widespread 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected across the area tonight thru tomorrow morning. Expect snow to begin as early as 7PM across northwest Missouri and northeastern Kansas however, the heaviest snow will fall during the overnight hours...generally between midnight and 5AM. The snow will be of the light and fluffy variety (sorry to those looking to make snowmen or having a good old fashioned snowball fight). 

This should make snow removal on roadways a bit easier and, for those looking to clear off their driveways, a leaf blower should be able to accomplish that. 

The last time KC received 3" of snow in one event was almost 3 years ago on 2/4/14! So, it been a while since we have seen this much snow so take it easy out there late tonight and tomorrow morning! Stay safe everyone.
