Early morning church fire in Butler

On Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 04:20 a.m. the Butler Fire Department was dispatched to the Ohio Street United Methodist Church for a fire alarm. 

First units arrived on scene and found smoke coming from the building. 

Upon entry to the building a small fire was found in the sanctuary and extinguished. At 5:37 the fire was under control. There was smoke damage throughout the rest of the building. 

Units were released from the scene at 6:53 a.m. Butler Fire received mutual aid assistance from Central Cass County Fire Protection District and Rich Hill Fire Department. There were no injuries.

Obituary - Peggy Joann Oberly

The funeral service for Peggy will at 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2017 at Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri.

The minister officiating at the service will be Pastor Dana G. Taylor. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home preceding the service. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery, Taberville, Missouri. The family suggests any memorial donations be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery.

Peggy Joann Oberly, 77, daughter of G.L and Opal (Todd) Bowen, was born November 15, 1939 in Filley, Missouri. She passed away March 27, 2017 in Appleton City, Missouri.

Peggy graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1957 and lived at home until her marriage to Dan Oberly February 20, 1959 at Filley West Church. She loved being a farm wife and working outdoors; vegetable and flower gardening were two of her favorite pastimes. Peggy was a gifted artist and she loved music. She played several different instruments but enjoyed piano, guitar and saxophone the most.

Peggy was a member of the Assembly of God Church in El Dorado Springs, Missouri and her church service was very important to her. She helped with special dinners and yearly cleaning chores. In 2003 Peggy traveled with a group to Uruguay where they helped build a church. She was a member of the Osage Community Ladies Club in Taberville and also enjoyed coupon trading with a group in El Dorado Springs.

In later years Peggy and Dan sold a piece of land to a group of hunters for a duck hunters club. She had continued to watch after the area and clean their camping trailer before each hunting season began as long as she was able.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Rhonda Gay Oberly; her sister, Hazel Richardson; and nephew, Terry Joe Richardson. Survivors include her husband Dan Oberly; two sisters-in-law, Clara Belle Oberly and Elizabeth Joann “Jody” Davis and her husband Noble Eugene; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.





Appleton City woman arrested in Benton County

On 3/28/17 around 11:35am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Benton County arrested 46 year old Shannon L. Knowles of Appleton City, Missouri.

She was arrested for 1.) Felony Hindering Prosecution.

Shannon L. Knowles was booked into the Benton County Jail and she was placed on a 24 hout hold.

Updated Obituary - William J. “Big Willie” Reed

 William J. “Big Willie” Reed
William J. “Big Willie” Reed, 50, of Pleasant Hill, was born, April 25, 1966, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of William T. and Sharon O. (Schenk) Reed. He departed this life, Saturday, March 25, 2017, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a 1984, Smith-Cotton High School Graduate, Sedalia, Missouri.

Will was a Paver and Roller operator for Ideker Construction. He enjoyed spending time at the lake, going to concerts, golfing, mushroom hunting, and an evening with all his friends at Roosters Bar & Grill. He was a member of the Operators Union Local #101, Jewel Lodge #480, A.F. & A.M, and the Ararat Shrine Temple.

Will was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Reed, on February 13, 2002.

He is survived by his father, Bill Reed of Pleasant Hill; other relatives and a host of many, many friends.

Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2017, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Shriner’s Hospital and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Two arrested after fleeing police in Henry County

Two men were stopped last week and arrested by law enforcement officers on Highway 13 north of Clinton in Henry County. The arrest took place on Wednesday night, March 22.

The two men, Philip George, 30, and Jose Aguilar-Cruz, 39, have been charged in federal court with distribution of around 50 grams of methamphetamine, according to
the Springfield News-Leader.

Law enforcement officers viewed George and Aguilar-Cruz sell about a half pound of methamphetamine on Wednesday evening, March 22. The transaction took place in the parking lot of a Wendy’s Restaurant in Bolivar, located in Polk County.

The two drug dealers fled north on Highway 13 after Troopers of the Missouri Highway Patrol attempted to stop them. A slight distance north of Clinton, spike strips were used by law enforcement officers to stop the vehicle and take the two men into custody.

On Thursday, March 23, both George and Aguilar-Cruz were charged in federal court. Both men were placed in the Greene County Jail. George and Aguilar-Cruz had a hold placed on them by the Drug Enforcement Administration. In addition, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agents placed a second hold on Aguilar-Cruz.

Special Agents of the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, according to the complaint filed in federal district court, have been investigating drug selling rings in Southwest Missouri and elsewhere supplied with drugs by Aguilar-Cruz.
