Updated Obituary - Larry Darrell South Sr.

Larry Darrell South Sr., 78, of Drexel, MO passed away on December 30th, 2018 at Research Hospital surrounded by family. Cremation, with a memorial visitation to be held from 1-2 PM Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Mullinax Funeral Home – Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009) in Drexel. Larry was born on March 5th, 1940 in Sugar Creek, MO to Floyd and June (Moser) South and grew up in the Kansas City area. He married Janice (Campbell) South on June 23rd, 1962 and together had five children. The family moved to Drexel in June of 1973 and he and his wife became active members of the community with Larry becoming a volunteer firefighter.
He attended and graduated from the school of hard knocks working for just about anybody doing just about anything, from tow truck driver in Oklahoma City, OK, apple picker in Tacoma, Washington, wire winder in Anaheim, California and later attended mechanics classes to become a “Transmission man” for Ford Dealerships in the Kansas City area. After over 30 years with Ford he retired in 2005 and started working part time for the city of Drexel and helping Janice babysit and chase great-grandkids around the house.

Larry loved building go-carts with his boys as they grew up, camping, fishing, going to the lake and riding his favorite horse Slim. Larry was well known for and will always be remembered for buying and selling just about anything in his front yard.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife Janice, one son John Mac Arthur South, one great-grandson Gage Kraft his parents and one brother. He is survived by one sister Theresa Edmonds and four children, Deborah Blanton of Drexel, MO, Donna Gray of Drexel, MO, Larry South Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL, Ralph and (Kathy South) of Drexel, MO, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the family through Mullinax Funeral Home.




Updated Obituary - Thomas Matthew Timme

Thomas Matthew Timme, 59, Harrisonville, MO, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the funeral home. Contributions to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Matt was born February 7, 1959 in Harrisonville, the son of William and Esther (Brabble) Timme. He grew up in the Harrisonville area and moved to North Carolina after high school to begin farming. Two years had gone by when Matt returned to Harrisonville and later married Sandra Joanne Cameron on October 12, 1979 and started a family, having four daughters and one son.

Matt started working for Hartzler Farms in March, 1979 and continued to work there for 39 ½ years. He loved all aspects of the farm, from the spring planting to the fall harvest and all the cattle work in between. Matt also enjoyed hunting, fishing, tractor pulls, Sunday family dinners, going to the coffee shop, vacationing with his wife, and most of all, his grandkids.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther Timme, one sister, Sue (Timme) Parrish, and two brothers, Steve Timme and Clay Timme. He is survived by his wife, Sandy Timme, of the home; four daughters, Billie Timme, Harrisonville, Renee Deshazer and husband, Dustin, Harrisonville, Jamie Conran and husband, Tj, Archie, Britney Timme, Harrisonville; one son, Daniel Timme and wife, Rachel, Harrisonville; eight grandchildren, Katie, Stephen, Emma, Kash, Haylee, Drake, Bryson, and Benson; one brother, Wyatt Timme and wife, Betty, Denver, CO, and one sister, Robin Thurman, Butler, MO, along with numerous nieces, nephews, tons of friends, and his beloved dog, Cocoa.



Butler woman injured in two vehicle accident north of Rich Hill

On 1/2/19 around 5:50pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies and Rich Hill Fire Department responded to a two vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of I-49 at mile marker 123.4 near the Marais des Cygnes River Bridge.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the front right of the 2002 Ford F-350 driven by 30 year old Matthew J. Hammer of Butler, Missouri struck the left rear of the 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 67 year old Thomas L. Jobe of Butler, Missouri.

A passenger in Mr. Jobe's vehicle 66 year old Dixie Dawson of Butler, Missouri sustained minor injuries in this accident and she was transported by ambulance to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The Mercury was towed from the scene of the accident Douty's Tow of Butler.

Updated Obituary - Karen Denise Miller

Karen Denise (Knox) Miller departed this life on December 29, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.  

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with visitation from 9:00-10:30.  

Burial to follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, MO.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Karen was born August 7, 1960 in Harrisonville MO, the daughter of Robert and Connie (Trog) Knox.  She was employed by the government for 35 years.  Her career began as a GS-2 clerk typist with the Social Security Administration in downtown Kansas City.  Karen drove 90 miles one way in the beginning of what proved to be a very successful career.  

Through her desire for occupational enhancement and personal development, she was awarded multiple promotions and rose to the level of GS-13, Budget Analyst for the United States Department of Agriculture. 
Karen met Steve Miller in May of 1987, at Richards Gebaur Air Force Base in Belton, MO.  The two were married June 16, 1990, in Lee’s Summit.  Over the years, Karen and Steve expressed their love of family through camping trips, travel, and holiday gatherings.  They played an important role in the lives of their nieces, nephew, great nieces and great nephews.  They could always be found in the stands at sporting events, school programs and scouting functions.  Karen’s whistling of excitement and support could be heard over the roar of any crowd. 

Karen was preceded in death by her father, Robert Knox, in 2002.  She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Steve, of the home, along with their 2 beloved dogs, Dixie and Libby.  Also, left to mourn her passing are her mother, Connie Knox, Harrisonville, her sisters, Linda (Chris) Patrick, Dallas, Texas, Janet (Lee) Gaddy, Freeman, Diane (CW) Noble, Harrisonville, Debbie (John) Winders, Collins, and one brother, Doug (Amy) Knox, Harrisonville. 

Nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly include, Shanda and Patrick Ryberg, Brandon (Deanna) Winders, John (Monica) Winders, Kyle Knox, Sara Knox, Sean Patrick, Keri (Spencer) Travars, Jordan Patrick, and Joe Noble.  Great nieces and nephews include, Corbin and Mason Ryberg, Chloe Winders, Miranda and Whitney Winders, Ariel, Isabelle, Junior and Snowdin Travars, Kennedy Noble and Tanner Parman.

Karen will be missed and fondly remembered by an abundance of extended family and friends.

Obituary - Linda Russell Groves Carlson

Linda Sue Russell Groves Carlson, 74, of Drexel, Missouri passed
from this life Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009). A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, January 2, 2019 also at the Drexel Chapel. Interment will follow services in West Point Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri. Linda was born April 19, 1944 to Woodrow and Dorothy Reed Russell in Miami County, Kansas. Linda graduated from LaCygne H.S. in 1962.

She was united in marriage on December 29, 1962 to Edgar Groves until his death in 1977. To this union, six children were born, Nancy, Julie, Thomas, Treva, Sara, and Elena. On November 16, 1978 she married Melvin Carlson of Randolph, Kansas and became the stepmother to David and Jessica.

Throughout her life, she served in many capacities, paid and unpaid, including bus driver for Miami R-1 schools, in-home and hospice caregiver, cook at the Leonardville, KS nursing home, housemother and cook at Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Kansas State University. She later volunteered in prison ministry, as a cook at Grindstone Lake Bible Camp in Minnesota, and experienced missionary trips to Alaska and Poland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 14 years Edgar Groves, infant daughter Treva, sister Louise Careswell, and brothers M. Dean Russell and Roy Curtis Russell.

Linda is survived by her husband Melvin Carlson of Randolph, Kansas, son Thomas Groves (Melissa), daughters Nancy Dobson (Harvey), Julie Rice (Tim), Sara Mathis, and Elena Nelson (Pete), David Carlson (Joy), Jessica Boeckman (Joe), twenty grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, brothers Dale and Don Russell, sisters Doris Yadon (Gary), Loretta Creek, Twila Russell, Gayle Semple (Don), and Patricia Larson, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Linda will be remembered for her daily devotion to Jesus and the many ways she reflected His love to others.

Bates County Memorial Hospital January Employee of the Month

James Friederich is recognized as the Bates County Memorial Hospital Employee of the Month for January, 2019. 

James began his full time employment at BCMH in 2013 in the Information Systems Department. James has become a crucial part of the revenue cycle team, as well as the IT staff. 

James is passionate about what he does and always wants to do the job well. He takes great pride in completing work assignments timely and accurately. He is diligent to listen to every detail and is a great team player.




MSHP Reports Eight Fatalities Over New Year’s Counting Period; No Boating Fatalities Or Drownings

EMPHASIS: MSHP Reports Eight Fatalities Over New Year’s Counting Period; No Boating Fatalities Or Drownings

Eight people died in traffic crashes during the 2019 New Year’s holiday weekend. Last year, there were seven fatalities. The 2019 New Year’s counting period ran from 6 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018, through 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the following:

Crashes ― 352
Injuries ― 112
Fatalities ― 7
DWI ― 127

The remaining fatality was investigated by the Columbia Police Department.

[Note: During the 2018 New Year’s counting period, the Patrol investigated 229 traffic crashes, which included 77 injuries and five of the seven fatalities. Troopers also arrested 129 people for driving while impaired during the 2018 New Year’s holiday. There were no boating crashes. No one drowned over the 2018 New Year’s counting period.]

One fatality occurred in each of the Troop A, Lee’s Summit, MO, Troop C, Weldon Spring, MO, Troop F, Jefferson City, MO, Troop G, Willow Springs, MO, Troop H, St. Joseph, MO, and Troop I, Rolla, MO, areas; two of the fatalities occurred in the Troop D, Springfield, MO, area.

One fatality occurred during the counting period on Friday, December 28, 2018. John R. Egly, 39, of Mountain View, MO, died when the vehicle he was driving ran off the roadway, overturned several times, then came to rest on its top. Egly was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The crash occurred in Howell County on County Road 2790 west of Mountain View. Howell County Coroner Tim Cherry pronounced Egly dead at the scene.
No traffic fatalities occurred on Saturday, December 29, 2018.

Two fatalities occurred on Sunday, December 30, 2018. Amanda L. Keathley, 40, of Spickard, MO, died when the vehicle she was driving failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned. Keathley was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. The crash occurred in Ray County on Missouri Highway 13 at Missouri Route FF. Dr. Luis Robles pronounced Keathley dead at Ray County Memorial Hospital. The Ray County Fire and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene of the crash.

Savannah V. Green, 16, of Urbana, MO, died when the vehicle she was driving ran off the roadway and overturned. A passenger in Green’s vehicle sustained moderate injuries. Neither were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The crash occurred in Hickory County on County Road 302 northwest of Urbana. Dr. Riley pronounced Green dead at Citizens Memorial Hospital.

Three fatalities occurred on Monday, December 31, 2018. Jessica M. Vincent, 37, of Nixa, MO, died when the vehicle she was driving failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and struck another vehicle head-on. Vincent was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured; he was wearing a seat belt. The crash occurred in Christian County on Missouri Highway 14 west of Nixa. Dr. David Lee pronounced Vincent dead at Cox South Hospital.

Ramya Bharathi Bharathi Mohan, 34, of Eden Prairie, MN, died when the vehicle in which she was a passenger traveled off the east side of the roadway into the median and struck an emergency crossover. The vehicle became airborne, impacted the ground, and overturned multiple times before coming to rest on the roadway. Bharathi Mohan was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. Another passenger sustained minor injuries; she was in a child safety seat. The driver was not injured; he was wearing a seat belt. The crash occurred in Daviess County on Interstate 35 at the 65.2-mile marker north of Cameron, MO. Daviess County Coroner David McWilliams pronounced Bharathi Mohan dead at the scene. Daviess County Fire and Daviess County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

Phillip E. Farrar Jr., 53, of Steelville, MO, was walking eastbound in the westbound lane of Missouri Highway 8 when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver and a passenger in the vehicle both sustained minor injuries in the crash; both were wearing a seat belt. The crash occurred in Crawford County on Missouri Highway 8 east of Steelville, MO. Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson pronounced Farrar dead at the scene.

Two fatalities occurred on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Andrew J. Lucas, 27, of Festus, MO, died when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center line and was struck by another vehicle. Both vehicles then traveled off the right side of the roadway. Lucas was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was wearing a seat belt; he sustained moderate injuries. The crash occurred in Jefferson County on Mapaville Hematite Road north of Missouri Highway P. Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced Lucas dead at the scene.

Jason Harvey, 44, of Lake Ozark, MO, died after he was struck by a vehicle while standing in the right lane of U.S. Highway 63 near Prathersville Road in Columbia, MO. The driver of the vehicle that struck Harvey was not injured in the crash. The Columbia Police Department investigated the crash.

The only 100 percent survivable traffic crash is the one that never happens. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Every day as we travel on Missouri's roadways, we trust that every driver on the road is going to obey the speed limit, pay attention, and drive sober. "Don't Violate The Trust."
