FLASHBACK: Once in lifetime photo op
IN 1988, local newsman C.A. Moore was truly in the right place at the right time. While having a conversation with then sheriff Leonard 'Buck' Hough, the sheriff was summoned to give chase to a suspect through the streets of Butler. Hough told Moore "hop in, let's go", which resulted in the arrest of the subject and this- a locally famous photo that literally has been seen around the world.
Four complete BCMH Shadow program
These Butler High School Students just finished job shadowing at BCMH, in which they followed their mentor three hours a week for 3 months. BHS advisor Robin Colburn said job shadowing really helped them confirm their decision towards a career, and each one has committed to a career path in health care as a result.

Special Response Team takes fugitive into custody during search warrant
The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team arrested a wanted subject early Friday morning who had been placed on the Vernon County’s Most Wanted list last month. According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, Michael Allen Porter, 43, of Nevada was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at a home on Panama road west of Deerfield.
Mosher said Porter attempted to escape through a window in the back of the house but ran back into the home when he saw deputies waiting in the back yard. Because children were suspected to be in the home, deputies did not follow but tried calling him out instead.
“We didn’t want to go bursting into the home if we didn’t have too. After we called out on a speaker that the home was surrounded, he surrendered without incident” said Mosher.
Porter was wanted in Vernon County for Felony Domestic Assault, the City of Nevada for Failure to Appear, and Bates County for probation violation on an original charge of Felony Resisting Arrest and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Porter is being held in the Vernon County Jail with bonds totaling $8,145.52.
