Two in custody in connection to Butler City Lake death

The Butler Police Department in Butler, Mo. recovered the body of 69-year-old Cindy McCoy, of Butler, in a vehicle that was pulled from the Butler City Lake on Wednesday, May 1st.

Early Thursday morning, May 2, multiple agencies converged on a house on Center Street in Pleasanton, where one person was detained on a Bates County Circuit Court warrant for arrest in connection with that case.

43-year-old Monte M. McCoy was arrested on a warrant for felony assault in the first degree that states that the defendant (M. McCoy) “knowingly attempted to kill or cause serious physical injury to Cindy Lynn McCoy by striking her with a vehicle, and in the course thereof inflicted serious physical injury.”

Later Thursday morning, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation issued a notice that they were searching for 33-year-old Samantha McCoy as a person of interest in connection with that ongoing investigation.

She was apprehended at just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, and detained from Sugar Valley Lake following the receipt of an anonymous tip.

The warrant for her arrest from Bates County, Mo., lists the same charge of felony assault in the first degree and also states that the defendant (S. McCoy) “knowingly attempted to kill or cause serious physical injury to Cindy Lynn McCoy by striking her with a vehicle, and in the course thereof inflicted serious physical injury.”

Both are currently in the custody of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office awaiting extradition to Bates County, Mo.

We will continue to monitor this case and update when more information is made available.
