Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This October, Bates County Memorial Hospital is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women after skin cancer. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

· If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.

· If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

Fighting breast cancer is important to BCMH. For Breast Cancer Awareness month, Bates County Memorial Hospital is giving the community a chance to help area women receive breast health services that could potentially prevent breast cancer. You can do so by donating to BCMH Cares, a fund that provides free screening mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women. Over the past few years, this fund has helped many women in the community to receive screening and follow up imaging services when indicated thanks to supporters like the Butler Saddle Club and Miami R-3 schools (Pink Out).

To make a donation, send a check payable to BCMH Cares. Mail to Bates County Memorial Hospital – Attention Shannon Bjerke, PO Box 370, Butler, MO 64730. Donations may also be hand delivered, addressed to Shannon Bjerke, Administrative Assistant, to the hospital information desk between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For more information about the BCMH Cares program, contact Christi Pope, Director of Imaging Services, 660-200-7110.
