Wintry Weather Friday Evening - Saturday

Still watching the potential for wintry weather to arrive Friday night into Saturday. Ice and snow accumulations are possible, although much uncertainty remains with respect to specific areas and amounts.

Card Shower for Wayne Hunt

With things not going as thought or planned and Wayne's hospital staying being longer and him most likely going to be doing rehab in the hospital mom and I are wondering if anyone would help us do a card shower for Wayne?

Carl Bettels is pleased to ask for your support to become your Bates County Assessor

Carl Bettels is pleased to ask for your support to become your Bates County Assessor.

A graduate of Butler High School and a 4th generation farmer, Carl has lived most of his life in Bates County. He lived for a time in Kansas, where he met his wife Terry of 36 years. Together they have seven children and 12 grandchildren. Four of their children have served in the military and one is still active duty.


Carl has been an active member of Bates County Cattlemen for over 25 years, serving as Treasurer, Vice President and President. He has also served as Director of Missouri Cattlemen Association for 10 years, and was on the MCA Beef House Committee for three years.

Carl is an active member of his church, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Butler, serving on the Parish Council for over 10 years and is co-chair for their annual Lenten Fish Fry’s. Terry has worked at Bates County Memorial Hospital and is presently employed at Butler High School, where she has been for over 20 years.

Those who know Carl describe him as hard-working, honest and fair. He is looking forward to the opportunity to serve Bates County.

Obituary - Leroy Harley

Graveside services for Leroy Harley will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler. There is no visitation. Contributions to Osceola Food Pantry. Flando Leroy Harley, age 76 of Osceola, Missouri died Monday, January 6, 2020 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born February 25, 1943 to Fland and Mary Gruver Harley in Jasper, Missouri.

Leroy is survived by his sister, Elaine Edwards and wife Ernie of Lowry City, Missouri; two nieces, Tonya Potter of Liberal, Missouri and Tammy Edwards and Steve Vincent of Belton, Missouri; his girlfriend, Sylvia Meyers of Osceola, Missouri; one great-nephew, two great-nieces and many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Floyd Green.


Obituary - Ramona Maxine (Long) Harden

Ramona Maxine Harden, 82 of Nevada, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Girard Medical Center in Girard, KS. Ramona was born on April 10, 1937 in Nevada to Chester P. and Sadie M. (Bradley) Long. On November 16, 1956 she was married to Darrell Harden and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2018. Ramona grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School with the class of 1955. She was a homemaker who loved her family dearly. 

Ramona had a love for the outdoors, was a Kansas City Royals Fan, and most of all loved being with her family. She enjoyed listening to gospel music and was a long-time member of the Community Christian Church in Nevada. In her later years she had also attended the First Baptist Church in Nevada.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Savant of Nevada, her son, Chester Harden of Joplin, granddaughter, Chrissy Savant of Nevada, several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, one sister, Sherrie Praiswater of Nevada, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Darrell she was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Dennis Engelbrecht officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery near Walker, MO. The family will receive friends from 7:30 -8:30 pm on Thursday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.


Police seeking subject in Adrian area

Subject Richard J Perkins Sr ran on foot from deputies in the Adrian area. Subject has active warrants, do not approach, call 660-679-3232 if seen. 

Perkins is wearing jean jacket and a red hoodie.
