Flu season means taking precautions

Influenza season is here and according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is widespread in Missouri as of January 11, 2020. Bates County Memorial Hospital and Family Care Clinics have identified flu A and B in the community, and are asking those who have respiratory symptoms to not visit patients in the hospital.

Those who must enter the hospital with symptoms of respiratory illness (such as coughing, congestion, and fever) are encouraged to visit the hand washing kiosks provided for use in the hospital lobbies. Please wear a mask and use the hand sanitizer to help prevent the spread of illness.

According to the CDC, the best prevention of the flu includes:

  • An annual flu vaccine (6 months and older)
  • Stay away from sick people
  • Wash hands to reduce the spread of germs
  • If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others

Most people who come down with the flu get better without needing medical care or antiviral drugs. In most cases, it is better to stay home to rest while you recover, and to avoid infecting others. Some flu cases do need medical attention and/or intervention.

BCMH is committed to patient safety and quality of care. Thank you for your cooperation in providing the best protection possible to our patients during this flu season.

VCSO receives $10,000 grant to purchase soft body armor

Orders were placed this week for new soft armor vests for deputies after the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the LLEBG (local law enforcement block grant) administered Department of Justice.

According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, his office applied for the grant last summer and were notified in November they had received the grant. The funds became available this month to make the purchase.

“We were awarded the full $10,000 amount available through the grant to purchase new vests for the deputies” said Mosher.

The Sheriff said vests are expensive but a necessary precaution for deputies, so they had looked into grant funding to help purchase them. “The price of each vests is $1,000, so we were able to purchase 10 for our patrol staff and detectives without it costing the county anything.”
