Independence woman injured in Bates County Crash

On 2/21/20 around 10:20pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County responded to a one vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of I-49 around mile marker 118.4 south of Rich Hill.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2011 Hyundai driven by 25 year old Victoria N. Miles of Independence, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail.

Victoria N. Miles sustained minor injuries in this accident and she was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle received extensive damages and it was towed from the scene of the crash by Douty's Tow of Butler.

Obituary - Amanda Jeanne Guggisberg

Amanda Jeanne Guggisberg, 33, of Harrisonville, Missouri passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at her home. 

Funeral services will be scheduled at a later date. 

Memorial contributions are suggested to American Lung Association in Amanda’s name.

Obituary - Catherine Kern

Catherine Kern age 88 of Rich Hill, passed away Saturday, February 15, at Independence, Mo.

Funeral arrangements are under direction of Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, and services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 22nd, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Rich Hill. 

Rosary is to be recited at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with visitation to follow before the service. Burial is planned in the Green Lawn Cemetery at Rich Hill. 

Memorials either to St. Bridget's Church or the Kern Senior Center in Rich Hill are suggested and can be made in care of Heuser Funeral Home.

Road closure Friday in Vernon County

Missouri Department of Transportation officials announced a road closure for Friday.

Vernon County Route O North of Nevada between Halley Road and Indian Line Road is to be closed Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Crews will be replacing a deteriorating drain pipe.

MoDOT officials say Route O will only be closed where the work is taking place. Drivers will be able to get to driveways and entrances on either side of the work zone, however through traffic will not be allowed.

Obituary - James Melvin Johnson Sr.

James M. Johnson Sr., age 82, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Clinton Health Care and Rehab, Clinton. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 at 11am at Vansant-Mills Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Vansant Road Cemetery. James M. Johnson Sr. was born July 4, 1937 to Thomas and Nellie (Meyers) Johnson in Brownington, MO. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, scrapping metal, and building homes. He was a member of the Souls Harbor Church. James was always willing to lend anyone a helping hand.

James is preceded in death by his parents, wife Ellise, twin brother Cecile Johnson, 2 brothers Paul Johnson and Eugene Johnson, 2 sister Juanita Smith and Wanda Jones, daughter Pam Heuer, and daughter-in-law Victoria Johnson.

James is survived by 4 sons, James (Darlene) Johnson Jr., Larry (DeAnne) Johnson, Kelly Johnson, and Shane Johnson, a brother Harold (Mary) Johnson, sister-in-law Fancis Johnson, son-in-law Greg Heuer, 18 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton.
