Obituary - Kenneth Ray McWhorter Sr.

Funeral services for Kenneth Ray McWhorter Sr. will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Visitation will be prior to services from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Kenneth Ray McWhorter Sr., age 79 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, February 24, 2020 at Medicalodge in Butler. He was born March 21, 1940 to Owen Wesley and Oscarine Kizzee McWhorter in Morris, Illinois.

Kenneth, affectionately known as Jake, was one of ten children He grew up in Lexington, Illinois where he attended school. On December 14, 1957 he was united in marriage to Sharon Lea Lommatsch and to this union three children were born. In his early years, Kenneth worked at Pontiac Chair Factory. Kenneth later settled in Raytown where he owned and operated Accent and Design Upholstery for 38 years.

Kenneth enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and collecting antiques. He loved his family and grandchildren

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sharon McWhorter of Butler, Missouri; two sons, Kenneth Ray McWhorter Jr. and wife Cindy of Butler, Missouri and Daniel A. McWhorter and wife Tara of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a daughter, Connie Knight and husband Kenneth of Raytown, Missouri; three brothers, William McWhorter and wife Laverne of Salina, Kansas, James McWhorter and wife Sheila of Luling, Texas and David McWhorter of St. Louis, Missouri; three sisters, Sandra Smith and husband LeRoy and Libby Ahrens, all of Pontiac, Illinois and Ruth Bartuska and husband John of Burlington, Wisconsin; brother-in-law, Michael Lommatsch and wife Teresa of Bloomington, Illinois; three sisters-in-law, Kathy Johnson, Ruth McWhorter and Carol Fitzsimmons; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Owen; and one sister, Patty.


Obituary - Dixie Allen


Dixie Allen, 89 of Drexel, Missouri passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at St. Luke’s Plaza Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, February 28, 2020 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009). A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, prior to the service Friday, also at the chapel. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, Missouri. Dixie Mae Allen was born December 31, 1930 in West Line, Missouri to Ernest Ray and Lillie Musick Maloney. She attended the Goldwater Grade School in Lisle, Missouri until the 7th Grade. Her family then moved to the Main City area where Dixie graduated from the 8th Grade at Main City School. Dixie then attended Drexel High School and graduated in 1947.
Following graduation, in June of 1947 Dixie went to work for Kansas City Life Insurance Company in Kansas City, Missouri. She began in the mail department and worked her way up in the company. She retired in 1985 as the Senior Risk Analyst.
Dixie married Charles “Gene” Allen June 2, 1956 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Following both of their retirements, Gene and Dixie moved back to Drexel in 1987 and built their home. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage before his passing in 2017.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene Allen, sister Lavone Croson, brother-in-laws, Charles Land, Junior Hewitt, and Charles Croson, along with a nephew Steven Land. She is survived by her sisters Mandy Land and Marie Hewitt along with a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

Myers Cemetery accepting mowing bids

Myers Cemetery, located off 52 highway between Butler and Appleton City is taking bids on mowing and lawn care. Bids must be submitted by Marh 25, 2020. Appleton City Area Ministerial Alliance will hold Community Services as follows: Ash Wednesday Service February 26, 7:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor James Damon; Holy Thursday Service April 9, 7:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church with Pastor Alan Black; Good Friday Service April 19, 7:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Tony Reynolds; and Sunrise Service April 12, 6:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastor Ryan Campos. Ash Wednesday services at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose will be 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Services will be 5:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Butler.

Lenten Fish “Fry-Day” Dinners at Immaculate Conception Church in Montrose are scheduled for February 28, March 13, and March 27 from 5:00 – 7:30 in St. Mary’s School Hall. They will serve the “best fried fish around”, Suzy Q’s, green beans, cole slaw, cornbread, cookie and a beverage. Adults eat for $10, children (under age 10) for $5.

This is an update to the AC school calendar and how they are going to handle snow make-up days. Beginning Wednesday February 26, all early-out Wednesdays will be lengthened to full days, following the normal bell schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 3:13 p.m. Beginning March 2, 6 minutes will be added to the school day. School will still begin at 8:00 a.m. but dismissal time will be 3:19 p.m. Also, please note that March 6, which was originally scheduled to be an early release day, will now be a full day of school. The last day of school has been changed from May 12 to May 13, and dismissal will be at 12:15 on that day.

The Bates County Extension Council is hosting their 2nd annual Trivia Night Saturday, March 7, at the Adrian Optimist Building, Adrian, MO. Robert Perryman’s Kicken’ Chicken fundraiser will start at 5:00 p.m., and go until 6:45 p.m. The cost is $10 per plate. The Trivia Night begins at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $100 per team of up to 10 members. If you would like to donate an item to the silent auction, or sponsor the concession stand or sponsor a round of questions, contact the Bates County Extension office at 660-679-4167. The Extension Council is raising funds to help pay for the 4-H Youth Program Associate position in Bates County.

March is nearly here and in Appleton City that means it’s time to “Get Your Green On”! The 10th annual Wee Bit O’Parade will be Tuesday, March 17, at 1:00 p.m. Anyone can participate in this family-friendly event! Simply be at Forest Park at 12:45 for the stroll down Main Street to welcome Spring and celebrate the Irish in all of us.

A Reader’s Club is now being formed at your Appleton City Public Library. If you would be interested in participating, please come to the library on Saturday, February 29, at 10:00 a.m. and bring whatever is your recent favorite read. Brian “Super B” Knight t-shirts are being sold as a scholarship fundraiser sponsored by the Ellett Memorial Hospital. Shirts will have big emblem on the back and a small outline emblem on left chest. Colors are: red, midnight and charcoal. Sizes run from youth XS 4/6, Small 6/8, Medium 8/10, Large 2/14, and X Large 16/20. Adult sizes run from Small to IV Large. The Appleton City High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation, Inc. will be awarding five $1,000 scholarships to the graduating seniors in May, 2020. Students may be attending any type of post-secondary training. The applicants’ names are eliminated from the forms before being mailed to the out-of-town alumni judges. Seniors may pick up their forms from the school counselor. The deadline for application is March 3 at 9:00 a.m. All ACHS seniors are encouraged to participate. These awards are made possible by contributors interested in the youth of the Appleton City area.
