Man rescued from trench in Clinton

At 1:49pm yesterday (March 3, 2020) the Clinton Fire Department responded to 1904 Epicurean Drive for an incident involving a trench collapse with a male victim trapped. The trapped victim, identified as 58-year-old Tim Wainscott (of Montrose, Missouri) was attempting to install a sewer pipe in an eleven foot deep trench when a section of the trench wall gave way, causing him to become trapped. Co-workers on scene immediately began attempting to free Wainscott while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

The responding crew of three personnel arrived on scene to find a large crowd of bystanders actively attempting to free Wainscott, buried in soil from mid-torso down. Emergency crews were able to communicate with Wainscott and establish that he was breathing fine and in no pain. Deputy Chief Matt Willings responded to the scene and upon arrival requested assistance from the nearest Trench Rescue team, Holden Fire and Rescue, to assist in rescue operations.

Rescue efforts immediately began to stabilize the trench walls to prevent further collapse. While preparing to begin shoring efforts, another section of the trench wall gave way and buried Wainscott to the top of his head. Wainscott was still able to speak to rescue workers and breath adequately even after the secondary collapse. Emergency shoring and rescue efforts commenced and rescue workers were able to remove the soil around Wainscotts head.

Utilizing several bystanders, shoring and stability of the trench was established. Emergency workers and bystanders worked together to begin to remove the dirt from around Wainscott. At 3:15pm, Holden Fire Department Trench Rescue Team arrived on scene. In a coordinated effort, additional shoring was put into place to ensure the stability of the trench as crews continued to dig deeper to free Wainscott.

A coordinated plan was established to lift Wainscott from the trench after he was freed. Utilizing Clinton Fire Departments new aerial platform, a harness was placed around Wainscott to lift him from the eleven foot deep trench. At 5:59pm, rescue workers were able to free Wainscott who was removed from the trench into EMS care.

Wainscott was conscious, breathing, and even joked a little after being removed from the trench. Golden Valley Hospital EMS staff took Wainscott to an awaiting air ambulance on scene where he was life-flighted to Research hospital for further evaluation. We are happy to announce that Wainscott is in stable condition at the time of this press release and may be able to return home today.

The Clinton Fire Department would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance: Clinton Police Department, Holden Fire Department, Golden Valley Memorial Hospital EMS, Pettis County EMS, Life-Flight Eagle, Evergy, Liberty Gas, Henry County Water Company, and Full-Line Lumber. Furthermore, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the numerous contractors and bystanders on scene that assisted with rescue efforts as needed.

Obituary - Ronald D. Cauthon

Ronald D. Cauthon, age 53 of Clinton, MO passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 from 6-8 PM at Vansant-Mills Chapel. Memorial Services will be Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 3PM also at the Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Clinton Animal Shelter and may be left in care of the funeral home. Fond memories and condolences may be left at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com.

Ronald "Ron" Dean Cauthon of Clinton passed away after a month long illness at age 53 on March 3. He will be remembered as a loving father, a loyal friend and the king of back roading. He was always the first to crank up the music and let the dust fly. Happiest when he had a beer in his hand and was surrounded by his family and friends, Ron could fill a room with his sense of humor. If you are wondering if you may have ever met him, you didn't — because you WOULD remember. His laugh was contagious and his personality was magnetic. He had a way of making the people he was with feel like the most important in the world.

Born March 11, 1966 to Les and Linda Cauthon, Ron was the second, and--per him--cutest, of two children. He spent his childhood terrorizing Clinton first on bicycles and later on dirt bikes with his brother and friends. Cars, music, parties and going to the lake afforded him the kind of adolescence we all wish we had. And with all of his antics and adventuring, we are really glad he survived to tell about it.

Growing up, he worked alongside his father, Les, and brother, Rick, at various family gas and service stations. Most recently, he managed and co-owned Les's Auto Center. After selling the business in 2009, Ron worked at Sears as a salesman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Les Cauthon.

He leaves behind his mother, Linda; three children: Sarah Smidt and husband, Dane, of Warrensburg, MO, Nic Cauthon and wife, Raegan, of Clinton, MO and Clayton Cauthon and wife, Abby, of Leeton, MO; brother, Rick Cauthon of Olathe, KS; and 5 grandchildren: Jessica, Jason and Jack of Warrensburg, MO; Ezra and Skyli of Warrensburg, MO.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, Missouri.

State Farm Athlete of the week Zack Wicks

We are excited to award Zack Wicks with State Farm Student Athlete of the week. Zack is a senior and on the Butler wrestling team. He recently won 4th place at the Missouri State Wrestling Tournament. Zack was nominated by Butler’s athletic director Jake Duvall. Zack has had an amazing wrestling career at Butler and has participated in wrestling since he was a small child.

He also has maintained good grades and works hard in the classroom. He is going to college at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in the fall and will be a member of their wrestling team. He hopes to major in physical education and become a wrestling coach. When we asked Zack what it takes to become an elite athlete he stated “first of all you have to be coachable.

You have to be ready to go at all times, even when it gets tough, don’t quit. You have to work hard and train hard and mentally be ready.” It was great to talk to Zack and we wish him the best of luck as he goes on to this next chapter!

Condolences from the Butler Police Department

The Butler Police Department would like to offer condolences to the family of Jim Garnett.

Chief Garnett retired from the Police Department in 2011 after 38 years of protecting and serving the City of Butler.

Earlier this year we were able to celebrate with Jim, have some laughs, and reminisce.

We are so grateful to have captured this moment with our 4 Chiefs, past and present.
