Four Arrested in Two Pursuits Overnight

Cass Co – Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were involved in two pursuits overnight that resulted in four people arrested.

Around 8:20 pm on Monday, deputies assisted the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Belton Police with a vehicle refusing to stop on northbound I-49 near Peculiar Way. The vehicle exited at Belton and continued to East 163rd St. The driver continued east on 163rd and crashed at the intersection of E. 163rd and Kentucky Road.

The driver fled on foot and a passenger taken into custody. A Cass County Sheriff’s Office K9 team tracked the driver and located him hiding in a field near the scene. The subject surrendered and arrested without further incident. Both subjects were released to the custody of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Around 12:30 am on Tuesday, deputies with the Criminal Apprehension Unit attempted to stop a white SUV pulling a trailer in the area of E. 289th and Jones Rd west of Harrisonville. For nearly 20 minutes, deputies followed the vehicle west on gravel roads at speeds between 20-50 mph. As the pursuit reached S. St. Rt. O, south of Freeman the driver turned south. Deputies deployed a tire deflation device bringing the vehicle to a stop in the area of East 319th Street. When the vehicle stopped a passenger fled on foot and was caught by deputies. The driver was taken into custody.

“These examples of career criminals, who resist arrest, and continue to victimize our communities, highlight the failures of our criminal justice system to protect our citizens. Criminal Justice Reform and Bond Reform, are politically correct ways to describe these failures. My promise to our citizens is we will be relentless in our pursuit of career criminals in our effort to Keep Cass County Safe,” said Sheriff Jeff Weber.

The driver, Bret A. Shelton, 53, Blue Springs, is in custody for the following warrants:

From the desk of Heather Diehl Butler Ward 2 City Councilwoman

Butler City Council had a finance/budget meeting this last night! 3.5 hours to be exact! But we did get through the budget and found some items that we need to adjust, some further questions/accounts to investigate, and a few other things to still decide on.

We did make progress though. We do not feel comfortable passing the budget until we are completely sure that it looks accurate. We are diving deeper than has probably been done for quite some time.

We do not take this job lightly! We want to ensure taxpayers that we are making the best decisions we can for the future of Butler.

We will meet again Saturday morning at 7am to hopefully finish up the budget to prepare to adopt it at our next meeting.

Seat Belt Check!

Statewide campaign encourages teens to buckle up.

JEFFERSON CITY – Law enforcement will be out in full force March 15 -31 to help improve teen seat belt use and save lives.

Is your seat belt on? Seat Belt Check! Buckle Up! This year’s campaign theme, “Seat Belt Check!” reminds us to hold each other accountable and make a seat belt check before the car starts. Wearing a seat belt is your best defense in a traffic crash so make sure you and everyone in your vehicle are buckled up. Everyone, every trip, every time.

“Teens are some of the most inexperienced drivers on our roadways, yet only 74% of Missouri’s teens buckle up” said Jon Nelson, MoDOT assistant to the state highway safety and traffic engineer. “Statewide education and enforcement efforts work hand in hand to drive the message home.”

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety wants to remind teens how dangerous a car ride can be if they don’t take wearing their seat belt seriously. Consider some of the reasons you should choose to wear your seat belt:

  • Under Missouri’s Graduated License Law, permit drivers and all passengers must wear seat belts.
  • Of the 56 teenagers killed in Missouri traffic crashes in 2019, 44 were vehicle occupants and 33 of them (79%) were not buckled up.
  • When properly used, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injuries to front-seat passenger vehicle occupants by 45% and reduce the risk of moderate-to-critical injuries by 50%.

With no primary seat belt law or all-driver texting ban in Missouri, teens and all motorists are asked to personally take the challenge to Buckle Up Phone Down. Make sure you and your passengers are buckled up and put your cell phone down.
