Jacob Meinsen, a lifelong student at Archie, plans to become an EMT at a local fire station or hospital, while using his A+ to continue his education to complete a Paramedic associate’s degree. His long term goal is to become a flight medic with LifeFlight Eagle. Jake attended Cass Career Center for two years, completing their Fire Science and EMT programs. His passion, dedication and drive for those programs earned him a membership in the National Technical Honor Society. Looking back, Jake’s highlights of high school are earning his EMT certification and license as well as making the varsity baseball team 3 out of 4 years. Lindsey Marie Brown, 44, Harrisonville, Missouri departed this life on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at her home in Harrisonville.
She is survived by her husband, Tim Brown and a daughter, Annalyce Marie Brown both of the home; her father and step mother, Dewey and Barb Henry and her mother, Paula Turner; other relatives and friends.
Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Dickey Funeral Home at a later date.

Obituary - Christopher Michael Shannon
Christopher Michael Shannon, 29, of Orrick, Missouri (formerly of Archie) passed away on Friday, April 3, 2020 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10th at Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, Missouri. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Leukemia Foundation.

Drexel FFA officer spotlight
His SAE includes working at Food Fair. He has competed in the Food Science CDE his freshman year, and planned on competing in dairy foods this year. His favorite FFA memory is when Mr. Tucker was hypnotized at national convention his freshman year.
Fourth COVID case confirmed in Bates County

The Bates County Health Center has confirmed another positive case of COVID-19 in Bates County.
The individual, a female in her 60’s, resides on the Bates County side in Drexel. There is no travel related to this individual. This new case brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Bates County to four.
As with all positive cases, Bates County Health Center is working to identify and contact any individuals who may have come in contact with this individual while they were infectious and will monitor them for any signs and symptoms of illness.
Individuals should continue to stay home, clean/disinfect any high touched surfaces, wash their hands with soap and water routinely, use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available, don’t touch your face (especially eyes, nose & mouth) and adhere to 6- foot social distancing when you must be out. It is up to each and every one of us to stop the spread of this disease!
No Vidalia onions this season...
Don Padley, President of Bates County Shrine Club, regrets to announce that the Vidalia onions will not be available this season for distribution. Do to the COVID -19 virus the shipment of onions and distribution of onions would be a health concern. These special onions are a seasonal project for the Shrine Club and the proceeds go to the Shriner's Hospital for Children and well as supporting the Shrine Circus for our children. Your local club has been and will continue to support Bates County as special needs arise.
Community support has always been substantial in purchasing our onions and if anyone wants to contribute to our philanthropy, donations will be accepted by the Club and distributed as promised. A celebration of life service will be held at Hill & Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri at later date.
Interment will follow the memorial service in Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas.
Pauline's wishes were that any memorial donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church and may be left at/mailed to Hill & Son Funeral Home, P.O. Box 33, Appleton City, MO 64724.
Pauline Vivian (Caruthers) Cox, 101, was born in Walker, Missouri July 1, 1918, the daughter of Herman William and Frankie Hortense (Anderson) Caruthers. She departed this life April 3, 2020 at Appleton City Manor Nursing Home surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.
Pauline’s family moved to Appleton City when she was very young, and she attended Appleton City Schools. Following graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she was employed by William Volker & Company until her marriage to Clayton L. Cox on July 29, 1939.
For a few years they lived in Kansas City, Kansas, then Washington, D.C. and later Kahului, Hawaii during WWII. Following the war, they established their home in Chicago, Illinois, where they became partners in the C & C Cartage Company. Pauline continued to operate their company even after Clayton’s death in 1974.
In 1986 she sold the trucking company and moved to Overland Park, Kansas. In 1992 she relocated for the last time back to Appleton City. While living in Appleton City Pauline was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, AC Community Club, and Ellett Memorial Hospital Auxiliary as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of the Mound City American Legion Auxiliary #248 for over 50.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Clayton, her parents, her sister Louise and an infant brother Glen. Survivors include many cousins; her Godchild Carol Henning of Idaho Falls, Idaho; her special namesake Paula Engle of Rancho Santa Fe, California; and Judy, Jodi, Melba and Brian who became her caring family in her later years.
Interment will follow the memorial service in Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas.
