Obituary - Juanita Smith

Juanita Smith, 97, formerly of Vernon County, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at Northland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kansas City. Juanita was born December 21, 1922 in Holstead, MS to Isaac P. and Julia O. (Alford) Douglass. She married Harold Grant Smith on July 7, 1945 in New Orleans, LA and he preceded her in death in 1993.

Juanita grew up in Crystal Springs, MS where she graduated high school and then attended Co-Lin Community College in Wesson, MS. Juanita went on to serve in the United States Navy from July 8, 1943 to October 15, 1945 and was stationed stateside during WWII. Following her service years, she and Harold came to Bronaugh to farm with Harold’s father, and while there, they welcomed two of their children. The couple lived in Illinois from 1954-1970 adding two more children to the family. After returning to Vernon County Juanita was a substitute teacher in the Bronaugh School District for 10 years. Juanita was a member of the Heritage Baptist Church and was very active in every church she attended, teaching Sunday for many years. She was also a caregiver for the elderly for 10 years while living in the Bronaugh and Sheldon area. Following the death of her husband she moved to Nevada. She has resided in Kansas City since 2016.

She is survived by three children, Doug Smith (Jean) E. Moline, IL, Carolyn Smith, Tyler, TX, and Allen Smith (Sandy), Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, Nena Fink (Marvin), Jaimie Smith, Tom Bussert (Janie), Michael Bussert (Anji), Jon Bussert (Amber), Heather Conover (Mark), David Smith (Allie), Rachel Pulliam (Kevin), Brandon Smith (Mandy); 19 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Diane Smith, Mt. Zion, IL; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, son, Lynn Smith, grandson, Chad, granddaughter, Robin, one brother, and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Stan Bunch officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Worsley Cemetery in Bronaugh. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to Worsley Cemetery or Heritage Baptist Church c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Bates County Health Center free Covid-19 testing in Butler

September 24, 2020 from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Aquatic Center parking lot, the Bates County Health Center will be doing FREE COVID-19 testing.


Henry County Health Center confirms two new positive cases of COVID-19


The Henry County Health Center (HCHC) has received confirmation of two more positive cases of COVID-19. One who resides in the town of Clinton, and one who resides in the town of Deepwater. 

All close contacts to confirmed cases. This brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Henry County to 155. 

All contact tracing has commenced and all parties that have had close contact are being notified. HCHC continues to encourage residents to practice social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, and to remain home if you are sick. 

The CDC continues to recommend that individuals to wear a face covering when you are in public, and are unable to social distance, to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.


Rich Hill Band students will be starting their Texas Roadhouse Roll Fundraiser tomorrow

The Rich Hill Band students will be starting their Texas Roadhouse Roll Fundraiser tomorrow!!! $5 per dozen rolls and $3 per tub of cinnamon butter! Rolls will be available for pickup on November 14th just in time for your Thanksgiving celebrations! Rolls come frozen and you bake as directed!

Obituary - Franklin Delano Drummond

Franklin Delano Drummond, 77, Nevada, MO passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Frank was born December 8, 1942 in Yuba City, CA to Bert L. and Bess (Morgan) Drummond. He was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Key on November 30, 1962 in Nevada and she survives.

Frank came to Horton at a young age. He was raised in Horton and graduated from Metz High School Class of 1960. Frank worked for Nevada State Hospital as a recreation aide for more than 20 years, and at Pathways in Nevada for several years. He also farmed and raised cattle most of his life.

In addition to his wife Joyce, he is survived by a son, Lanny Drummond Lakin, KS; two grandchildren, Allison Drummond, Joplin, MO, and Paige Bordewick and her husband Luke, Joplin, MO; two sisters, Fern Aston and Pansy Hancock, both of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Claude and Alvin Drummond and who resided in California.

No services are planned.

Please see the attached release regarding a second student testing positive for COVID-19. All parents have been notified if their student needs to quarantine.

Unfortunately, we will not have enough varsity football players for the next two Fridays to play our varsity games. The games for Friday, September 18 and Friday September 25 are cancelled. We will still play our JV games.

The University of Missouri Extension Human Development & Family Science Field Specialists are offering a statewide Boost Your Brain & Memory Class via Zoom. This is a virtual class beginning September 28th to improve your brain health. The class uses a whole-person approach that helps you form new habits to live a healthier lifestyle, remember things better, be more organized, pay closer attention, and regulate your emotions. Each participant will receive a pdf workbook including memory exercises, tips on nutrition and exercise, and summaries of evidence-based research on brain health. 

Each session will have group discussion, educational videos, memory strategies, and goal settings around each session topic. Session topics include the following related to brain health:

September 28- Introduction: Brain health and why it is important at any age

September 30- Physical Activity: Improving brain health and lowering risk of dementia

October 5- Emotional Health: Everyone has stress, learn how to keep it manageable

October 7- Intellectual Activity: Ways to challenge our brains through life-long learning

October 12- Nutrition: How nutrition affects brain health

October 14-Spiritual Activity: Ways to inspire brain health through spiritual activity

October 19- Social Engagement: How to get the most out of social interactions

October 21-Summary: Putting all the pieces together to make lasting lifestyle changes

Each participant will receive a downloadable workbook including memory exercises, tips on nutrition and exercise, and summaries of evidence-based research on brain health. Our aim is to help participants implement new habits to maintain cognitive health while also practicing new skills for better memory.

The workshop will meet every Monday and Wednesday for four consecutive weeks from 12 pm to 1 pm, starting September 28th through October 21st, virtually via Zoom.
