Fog and flying don’t mix...

What’s Up by LeRoy Cook

Over the weekend, the new year had proven to be a poor one for flying. Butler airport manager  Chris Hall had to issue a NOTAM for ice coating on the runway (quickly rescinded) but snow shower s moved in on Saturday and dense fog dominated Sunday and Monday.  Hopefully, January will straighten out eventually.

Traffic, as we said, was limited last week, but we observed a Piper Twin Comanche and a Cessna 172, along with a Piper Cherokee. I piloted  a sightseeing flight in the Cessna Skyhawk and made a few laps in the snowstorm using a Cessna 150.

In space-filler news over the holidays, the world media announced that the chances of being killed in an airplane crash went up last year. What they’re talking about is strictly airliner accidents; our general aviation record continues to improve, partly from reduced activity as well as safety efforts. The airline crashes seen last year were skewed by two tragic mishaps, a Pakistani airlines crash and a shot-down Ukrainian airliner in Iran. Otherwise, it would have been a relatively safe year, particularly for U.S. air carriers. And, no, there were no Boeing 737 MAX accidents in the record, since they were all grounded.

As we groped our way around in the fog, someone asked us “what causes fog anyway?” Condensation, pure and simple. But, it takes a combination of moisture and cooling, such as melting snow and ice like we had over the weekend. Other reasons could be radiation cooling of moist air late at night, or water-logged air moving over a cold surface, like happens along a coastline. Fog is defined as a cloud in contact with the ground, with no distinct cloud base to leave good visibility under it. Warming is the only cure, like warm blowing in or sunlight shining on the fog tops.

Our last question of the week from 2020 asked about what kind of airplane was first used to drop “smokejumper” fire fighters parachuting into forest fires, back in the 1940s. It was a Ford Tri-Motor, big and slow enough to be perfect for that job. The forest service no longer uses jumpers, since the 1960s. For next week, we want to know the original U.S. Air Force designation of the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II jet fighter, built in St. Louis, before the USAF went to the shorter model numbers. EMPHASIS: MSHP Reports Four Traffic Fatalities Over New Year’s Holiday Weekend; No Drownings Or Boating Fatalities

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, provides the following preliminary statistics related to the New Year’s holiday weekend:

Four people died in traffic crashes during the 78-hour counting period, which began at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2020, and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021.

2021 New Year’s Holiday Traffic Statistics

Troopers investigated the following:

Traffic Crashes — 458
Traffic Crash Injuries — 97
Traffic Crash Fatalities — 4
DWI — 135

[Note: Last year during the 30-hour New Year’s counting period, there were 323 traffic crashes statewide. In those crashes, one person was killed and another 140 were injured. During the 2020 New Year’s holiday, troopers arrested 58 people for driving while impaired.]

There were no boating crashes or drownings over the 2021 New Year’s holiday counting period.

Two traffic fatalities occurred in the Troop D, Springfield, area; one traffic fatality occurred in each of the Troop H, St. Joseph, and Troop I, Rolla, areas.

One person died in a traffic crash during the counting period on December 31, 2020.

Barbara J. Pitcock, 81, of Carthage, MO, died when the vehicle in which she was a passenger traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a traffic control support post. After the impact, the vehicle rotated, overturned, and came to rest in the roadway. The crash occurred in Jasper County on Missouri Highway 171 at Interstate 49 in Carthage, MO. Deputy Coroner Richard Rector pronounced Pitcock dead at the scene. Pitcock was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the vehicle sustained serious injuries in the crash; he was wearing a seat belt.
Two people died in traffic crashes on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2021.

Scott L. Ford, 48, of Kansas City, MO, died after the vehicle he was driving traveled southbound onto northbound Interstate 35 from the exit ramp at the 40-mile marker and struck another vehicle head-on. Both vehicles then came to rest in the middle of the northbound lanes of I-35. The crash occurred in Clinton County south of Lathrop, MO. Clinton County Coroner Lee Hanks pronounced Ford dead at the scene. Ford was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the vehicle Ford’s vehicle struck was wearing a seat belt; she did not sustain any injuries. Three juvenile passengers in the second vehicle sustained serious injuries; all of them were wearing seat belts. Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

Jerod R. Gerster, 21, of Nevada, MO, died when the vehicle he was driving failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, ran off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree. The crash occurred in Vernon County at Marmaduke Park in Nevada. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. EMT Dawn Best pronounced Gerster dead at the scene. A passenger in Gerster’s vehicle sustained serious injuries; he was not wearing a seat belt.

One person died in a traffic crash on January 2, 2021.

Danny E. Evans, 50, of Cuba, MO, died after losing control of the vehicle he was driving on an ice-covered bridge. The vehicle then traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. The crash occurred in Crawford County on Interstate 44 at the 213-mile marker. Evans was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; he was ejected from the vehicle. Dr. Melissa Bradley pronounced Evans deceased at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, MO. A passenger in the vehicle sustained moderate injuries in the crash; she was wearing a seat belt.

There were no traffic fatalities reported on Sunday, January 3, 2021.

NOTE: The fatality statistics in this news release could change if late deaths occur, or if other departments report fatal traffic crashes after this news release is sent out.

Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri. The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back.”

From the Archie R-5 School District

Athletic/Sporting Event News:
Beginning January 5, Archie will be limiting attendance. Anyone attending will be required to present a ticket. Players and cheerleaders will each be given 4 tickets the day before games to distribute to their family and friends.

One person from each party must legibly print their name and phone number on the back of their ticket. You are encouraged to do this ahead of time.

Admission will still be paid at the gate ($4 for adults, $3 for students). Pep club members who have paid their membership dues will be given a ticket prior to each game (with the exception of tournaments).

From the city of Nevada

Beginning this morning (Jan 4) City of Nevada crews will begin picking up tree and limb debris from the recent ice storm. City crews can only pick up debris that is placed behind the curb and in accordance with the set-out guidelines.

Tree and limb debris set-out guidelines:
1. Tree and limb debris must be placed behind the curb within the street right-of-way. City crews cannot enter private property or back yards to collect debris.

2. Avoid stacking limbs on water meters. If meter readers can’t access the water meter they will have to estimate water usage for that month.

3. Tree debris that’s mixed with bulky waste won’t be collected.

4. Please keep limbs out of the street.

The City Compost site at Jefferson & Douglas is open for Nevada residents to discard tree and limb debris. Call Public Works at 417.448.5114 for more information.
