Congratulations! To Miami Senior Jayden Reitz who received a silver medal at MSHSAA State Music Contest on his trumpet solo. 

He played “Trumpet Suite” (mvt’s 1 & 2) by Fitzgerald. After canceling the contest last Spring, this year’s contest was held virtually due to COVID.

Dora Irene (Spears) Carroll was born January 21, 1936 in rural Bates County near Ballard, Missouri. She passed away Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Citizen's Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Missouri at the age of 85. She was the youngest of nine children born to Roy Edward Sr. and Laura (Umstattd) Spears.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers (Elwin, Buddy, Buster and Asa), also her sisters (Mildred, Nina, Elizabeth and Lois). Dora is survived by her husband Thomas of Appleton City, MO, her three children Clark (Connie) Carroll of Appleton City, MO, Steven (Eldonna) Carroll of Butler, MO, Melinda (Paul) Noble of Appleton City, MO, brother-in-law Charles (Louise) Carroll of Harrisonville, MO, sister-in-law Wanda (Ross) Wainscott of Butler, MO; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren (with another expected in August) and many nieces and nephews.



Obituary - Lori Ann Light

Lori Ann Light, age 58, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 310 Johnston Pkwy, Raymore, Missouri 64083.

Lori was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 5, 1963 to Jac C. Behm and Carol (Lohoefener) Behm. She graduated from Belton High School in 1981. She later returned to education and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 1993 from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Lori was a woman of Lutheran faith, attending services at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymore as well as Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Olathe. She loved soccer and was a fervent supporter of local Kansas City teams, past and present. Lori’s boisterous and infectious laugh will be remembered by all that knew her.

Lori is preceded in death by her father, Jac C. Behm; mother in law, Judy Light; and nephew Kyle Behm.

She is survived by her mother, Carol Behm; significant other, Bobby Poole; son, Joshua Light (Lori); two brothers, Richard Behm (Kim) and Roland Behm (Ellen); and sister, Mellodie Ellis (Joseph).

Bates County Elks will serve takeout Award Winning Pulled Pork Sandwiches

On March 29th, the Bates County Elks will serve takeout Award Winning Pulled Pork Sandwiches by Jason Bennett, and baked beans, for $8, beginning at 6 PM. 

In recognition of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day, all Vietnam-era Veterans will receive a free meal.


Obituary - Sheila Estella Brakey

Sheila Estella Brakey, age 70 of Butler, Missouri passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 in Butler, Missouri. Sheila was born August 21, 1950, the daughter of Theodore and Thelma Louise Sparwaser Buhrle at Butler, Missouri. 


She enjoyed doing needlepoint, putting puzzles together, playing computer games and collecting various items. Sheila was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Buhrle. 

She is survived by husband, Benton, three sons, Danny Spear, Shawn Brakey (Bailey), Michael Spear, a daughter, Veronika Spear, a brother, Robert Buhrle, a sister, Karen Louise Watts, twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, March 27th at the Trading Post Cemetery in Pleasanton, Kansas. 

Visitation will be held from 1 pm to 1:45 pm, Saturday, March 27th at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. The family suggests contributions to Olive's Hope. Online condolences may be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.

Power Outage in Harrisonville

ATTENTION: The Harrisonville Electric Department is responding to a power outage currently affecting the west/central portions of town.

Staff say the outage was caused by an underground burn at one of the substations and are working diligently to get it restored.

Staff estimate repairs will take about 45 more minutes.
