The Appleton City Church of God invites the children of the community to an Easter egg hunt, hosted by Pat Shockey, on Saturday April 3 at the church on the corner of Beech and First Streets at 4:00 p.m. until the eggs are gone. Bring your Easter basket! They will reschedule to the following Saturday (April 10) if there is inclement weather.
The AIM Annual Easter Egg Hunt for ages 0 - 4th grade will be Saturday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m. at the Montrose Ball Park rain or shine. Bring your own basket and join them for fun at the park.
The Montrose Festival Committee is sponsoring a fried chicken dinner Saturday, April 3 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Montrose. No dine in meals will be served. Stay in your car and they will take your order and bring it to you. Adults are $10, kids 21 and under are $5. The menu is Robert Perryman chicken, green beans, cheesy potatoes, dessert and a drink.
The BOGO Book Fair is here! Come out and support the Appleton City School Library and pick up a book or two or three or four to read. The sale is in the AC School library. They will be open Thursday, April 1 from 2:30-6:00, Saturday morning, April 2, 9:00-1:00 and then next week April 5-9 from 2:30-6:30. The back door (across from the elementary playground) will be open. Buy one get one for equal or less value for free. It is the best book fair of the year!
The ACHS Senior Class will have Fried Tenderloin Sandwiches for sale Sunday April 11, from 11:00 - 2:00 or until they are gone. You can get a sandwich, chips and water for $8.00. The meal is drive through only, through the circle drive at school. Please come out and support the Senior class
If your child will be 5 before August 1st, now is the time to begin thinking about Kindergarten enrollment requirements. The following items are required for enrollment: immunization records state issued birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence. Did you know that your child can receive the immunizations that are needed to attend Kindergarten anytime on or after his/her fourth birthday? You do not need to wait until age five. Have your child fully immunized now and bring the immunization record to school on the day of Kindergarten screening. The ACHS Senior Class panels for special anniversary years are available for viewing at the Farm House Restaurant. Featured classes are 50 year-1971; 60 year-1961, 65 year-1956, and 70 year-1957. The Appleton City Museum provides these each year for viewing and the Farm House Restaurant graciously allows the panels there for their customers to enjoy.

The A.C. Spring City Wide Garage Sale dates will be April 16 & 17. Permits are $5 and can be purchased at City Hall from March 29-April 13. Permits to set up in the A.C. Optimum cow pregnancy rate and calf crop percentage is important to profit potential of a beef cattle operation. “Conducting a bull breeding soundness exam (BSE) to make sure your bull is structurally and reproductively sound prior to the breeding season is important to ensure these results,” says Patrick Davis MU Extension Regional Livestock Field Specialist. Therefore, Davis urges cattle producers to contact their veterinarian to conduct a BSE to ensure their bull is ready for the breeding season. MU Extension wants to educate cattle producers on other aspects of bull management in addition to the BSE so Davis will be working with local veterinarians and ZOETIS to conduct bull BSE clinics. In addition to the BSE, Davis will educate cattle producers on bull body condition scoring (BCS) and foot scoring (FS), which are tools to access the energy and structural status of the bull. “Bulls should be in a BCS of 6 as well as have an adequate FS for angle and claw set prior to the breeding season,” says Davis. Davis will also educate cattle producers on utilization of expected progeny differences (EPDS) and genomic testing information to improve their cattle operation. “Giving booster vaccinations and treating for internal and external parasites at BSE time, ensures bulls are healthy and do not pass disease or parasite issues onto the cattle operation,” says Davis. To that extent, the partnership with ZOETIS during the clinics may allow the veterinarian to provide these products to the bull owner at a reduced cost. University of Missouri Extension and Care Connection for Aging Services has scheduled 3 virtual Chronic Disease Self-Management Program and Diabetes Self-Management workshop in two different formats to help participants achieve their personal health care goals in 2021. Both of these free courses – Chronic Disease Self-Management (in both phone and ZOOM delivery) and Diabetes Self-Management - are part of the “Living a Healthy Life” series developed by Stanford University’s Patient Education Research Center. This course series is based on the assumption that people with chronic diseases have similar concerns and challenges and can find common ways to achieve personal goals through a review of materials in a discussion based format. These once-a-week six week interactive workshops will discuss with participants problems caused by chronic disease and introduce principles and, potentially, new approaches to chronic disease self-management. These free 6-week courses will allow workshop participants to discuss strategies to take care of their chronic health condition, communicate better with health care providers and incorporate healthful tools into their lives. Over the course of six weeks, MU Extension and Care Connection for Aging Services instructors will help class participants learn more about healthy eating, physical activity, decision-making, understanding emotions and stress management, problem-solving, action-planning, and communicating and working with healthcare professionals. Although these courses are not taught from a medical standpoint and instructors will not be able to provide information on medical care, course participants will learn more about ways to discuss medications and care options with their health care providers. Each course registrant will be provided a free copy of a self-study Living a Healthy Life workbook as a reference for additional study and healthcare planning. The course offerings include: Living a Healthy Life TOOLKIT - A telephone-based self-study/self-paced course. The course will be from April 9 to May 14 and a certified instructor will call each participant on Friday between 9:30-10:30 a.m. and discuss materials reviewed the previous week. Living a Healthy Life ZOOM course - A traditional discussion-based course delivered virtually by ZOOM from April 29 – June 3 between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Diabetes Self-Management ZOOM course - A traditional discussion-based course focused specifically on diabetes with persons and caregivers addressing the unique challenges of achieving goals while managing diabetes. The course addresses issues related to nutrition, exercise and improving communication with friends, family and healthcare providers. This course will be delivered virtually by ZOOM on Tuesdays from April 20 – May 25 between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required in order to get the free workbook and ZOOM links required to participate in these courses.
