Increased traffic despite iffy weather

What’s Up

By LeRoy Cook

It was a mixed bag of flying conditions over the past week, sometimes favorable, sometimes windy and overcast. The Fliars Club had to stand down with 500-foot ceilings prevailing on Saturday morning, so hangar flying had to substitute for the real thing.

A bunch of transient airplanes stopped in, such as a Piper Arrow from ATP flight academy in Kansas City, a Cessna Skylane, a Piper Cherokee or two, a Beech Bonanza A36 and a Cessna 172. Scott Phillips and Tim Hill came over from Drexel in Tim’s Cessna Skylane. Hereabouts, Bob Thompson and Cheto Sheets both obtained fresh Flight Reviews in the Cessna Skyhawk, Roy Conley flew his Grumman Tr2 and the Beech Bonanza N35, and new pilot Dayne Kedigh stopped in from Fort Worth to visit his old Cessna 150 friend. The SkyDive KC Beech King Air was only able to haul eight loads of jumpers on Sunday before the winds got too high for safety.

New Kansas City sectional charts came out on April 22, only valid for 56 days so they’ll need replenishing by June 17, at nearly $10. No big changes that I can see. Long way from the six-months for a quarter my chart cost when I started flying. But, we had to buy two maps, because the Kansas City chart only extended down to Rich Hill, where the Tulsa coverage took over.

Last month, the FAA issued new private pilot knowledge test questions, which is done twice a year in order to mix up the answers and questions so as to make it more difficult for “crib sheets” to be developed. The material on which the tests are based doesn’t change, but they have to rewrite the quiz anyway. The average score will probably drop for a while until on-line study programs catch up.

Bye Aerospace, developers of electric powered airplanes in Denver, has announced yet another project, while still trying to get certification for its eFlyer II trainer. They plan to build an eFlyer 800 eight-seat twin-prop 300-mph pressurized business plane, in partnership with Seimens, who make the motors and controllers. Just how the pressurization is supposed to work, without turbochargers, I don’t know. Bye doesn’t even have its four-place eFlyer 4 going yet. Ain’t venture capital wonderful?

The week’s question asked “what was the biggest gun ever installed in an airplane?” Reader Tim Cox informed me that it was the 105mm howitzer installed in the AC-130H Spectre attack aircraft, developed for the Vietnam war. Must have shoved the old Herk sideways when it went off. I would have said it was a 75mm field piece in the nose of a B-25 bomber in WW-II. Next week’s question is, “Who was the first Administrator of the FAA?” It was in 1958, and his first name was Elwood. You can send your answer tkochhaus1@gmail.com.

Obituary - Clint Mellenbruch

A Celebration of Life is planned for Clint Mellenbruch, formerly of Rich Hill, this Saturday May 1st from 2-4pm at Sweetwater Tabernacle Church in Rich Hill, MO. The public is invited to attend.

Vernon Clint Mellenbruch, age 59, of Stockton, Missouri, was born December 15, 1960 in Butler, Missouri, to William (“Bill”) Vernon and Syrelda Irene (Stoddard) Mellenbruch, and passed from this life on November 6, 2020, at Cox Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Clint, one of four children, grew up on a farm east of Foster, Missouri, and attended Rich Hill grade and high schools, graduating in 1980. Following graduation he opened “Clint’s Cycles” in rural Rich Hill.  Clint participated in many Motorcycle Trials competitions, winning a State Championship one year.  His love of motorcycles, ATVs, etc., was passed on to his three sons, Cole, Josh, and Luke., they spent many hours riding together. His nephews Mike and Bruce said Clint was “the fun uncle.” They loved going to his house as he always had something going on.

In 2007 Clint move to Stockton, Missouri , he latermet and married his wife Dana.  Clint owned and operated “Stockton Lake ATV and Watercraft”, working on and servicing personal watercraft, ATVs and dirt bikes.  He was affectionately known around Stockton as “the jet ski man.”

Clint was a friend to many and never knew a stranger; he could strike up a conversation with anyone.   Any time spent with Clint was memorable; he gave the best hugs.  He liked to make people laugh and always wanted people to know they were loved.   He enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed being at Stockton Lake.  If you were Clint’s friend on Facebook you saw the many pictures he took, usually taken at the lake.  Sunsets and sunrises were his favorite.  He had an eye for capturing beautiful pictures, but also liked to capture humorous ones as well. Clint was also very skilled at chainsaw art and created some interesting pieces which he gifted to family & friends.

Clint had many passions in life; one of which was jet skiing.  If the lake wasn’t frozen, then it was fair game!  Clint loved Jeeps!  He loved going around the lake and positioning his Jeep in some mighty precarious positions just so he could take a picture.   He was also an avid bowler.  He was introduced to bowling by his best friend in the world, his dad Bill.  His mom, Irene, took him at the early age of one month to his first bowling alley.  Most importantly, Clint was a man of God, and always shared his love for Jesus with others (John 3:16).

He is survived by his wife Dana Mellenbruch, of the home; sons Cole Mellenbruch (Tiffany), Adrian, MO; Josh Mellenbruch (Mackenzie Hale), Rich Hill, MO; and Luke Mellenbruch (Ezzie Hernandez), Rich Hill, MO; stepsons Ryan Davis (Robyn), Highlandville, MO; and Josh Davis (Dawn), Highlandville, MO; stepdaughter Nikki Strader (Levi), Nixa, MO; brother, Walter Mellenbruch (Norma Lea), Rich Hill, MO; sister, Carolyn McCombs (Bob), Webb City, MO; sister Linda McClanahan (Jerry), Carthage, MO; mother-in-law Marcella Payne, Springfield, MO; father-in-law Danny Langston (Billie), Harrison, AR; eleven grandchildren with one on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
