Obituary - Charlie Black

Funeral services for Charlie Black will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2021 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Charles Eldon “Charlie” Black, age 50 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. He was born January 13, 1971 to Charles Eugene “Gene” and Betty Lou Alkire Black in Butler.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Christy Black of Rich Hill, Missouri; one daughter, Emily Black of the home; his mother, Betty Black of Hermitage, Missouri; one sister, Jeanie West and husband Mike of Rich Hill, Missouri; mother-in law, Rose Turpen of LaCygne, Kansas, two brothers-in-law, Robert Turpen of LaCygne, Kansas and Dennis Heckadon of Hermitage, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Black; one sister, Anita Heckadon; and father-in-law, LeRoy Turpen.


Obituary - Martha Edith Stockstill

Martha Edith (Hickman) Stockstill departed this life on Sunday, August 15, 2021, at the age of 88 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada, MO. 

She was born September 20, 1932, on a farm five miles west of Schell City to Henry Leroy and Lena Leota (Armbrust) Hickman. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined the Blue Mound Baptist Church. 

After moving to Ketterman, she joined the Berea Christian Church until it closed, and then attended the Walker Christian Church. She attended grade school at the Flat Rock School and then the Schell City School, graduating in 1950.

On November 26, 1952, she married William Don Stockstill in Harrison, Arkansas and they celebrated 64 years of marriage before his death. They were the parents of one daughter. Edith was a homemaker until the fall of 1967 when she went to work at the Nevada State Hospital, where she worked in food service for twenty years. She lived in Vernon County all of her life and enjoyed taking care of her home, yard, and garden.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha “Marty” Patton (Rich) of Walker, MO; grandchildren, Anthony Cornell (Ashley) of Olathe, KS, Jenna Lowry (Kris) of Joplin, MO, and Dexter Patton of Olathe, KS; and great-grandchildren Jessalyn, Kinsey, and Harvey Cornell. She is also survived by her sister Lola Irene Hensley of El Dorado Springs, MO, and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers Claude Earl Hickman, Fred William Hickman, and Charles Melvin Hickman.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Walker, MO.

Memorials are suggested in Edith’s memory to either the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association or the Walker Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

Obituary - Janet Lea “Jan” Bond

Janet Lea “Jan” Bond, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Friday August 13, 2021. She was 75 years old.

Janet was born on March 20, 1946 in Wynne, Arkansas to L.R. Cotton and Dorothy Lines. After graduation Jan attended Central Methodist University. It was there in marching band, she met the absolute love of her life and best friend, Paul Bond. They later married and from their beautiful union came two children, Justin and Netanya.

Jan had such a special way about her and truly cared for all people, touching many lives throughout her journey. She was a physical education teacher for many years and would take joy planning out activities for her students to grow and learn from. Jan also coached basketball while working in Adrian and Lincoln. She coached Netanya’s junior high basketball team as well. Though Jan loved doing her work in the schools, her heart was always with the Lord and in Ministry. Jan worked for the Missouri West Conference of the United Methodist Church as the conference youth worker for several years. She then served as youth pastor at 1st United Methodist Church in Blue Springs, then at Lenexa UMC as youth pastor and Blue Ridge UMC as associate pastor.

Jan and Paul moved to Hannibal, MO in 2000 where she served Park UMC for six years. She spent a couple years at Grace UMC in Higginsville where she was dearly loved. Her final pastorate was at Aurora UMC for six years. In retirement she did ministry at Blue Ridge UMC in Kansas City and 1st UMC in Blue Springs. In complete retirement, she loved playing bass in the praise band at Blue Ridge UMC. Jan was an amazingly strong woman, setting an example to not only her children and husband, but to all she had mentored. She will be deeply missed but we know she is with the Lord still doing His work.

Jan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul Bond; children, Justin (Holly) Bond and Netanya (John) Bousman; her grandchildren whom she adored, Keaton and Camden Bond; sister Barbara (Michael) Dethrow; nieces and nephews; and many friends she considered family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leamon Rhea Cotton and Dorothy Lea (Lines) Cotton.

A visitation will take place Friday August 20, 2021 from 6-8 pm at Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church “The Ridge”, 5055 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. Services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10 am and will also be held at The Ridge with interment to follow at Brooking Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church “The Ridge”.



Henry County Health Center confirms 14 new positive cases of Covid-19

The Henry County Health Center (HCHC) has received confirmation there are 14 new positive cases of COVID-19.

This brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Henry County to 2304.

All contact tracing has commenced and all parties that have had close contact are being notified. HCHC continues to encourage residents to practice social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, and to remain home if you are sick.

The CDC continues to recommend that individuals to wear a face covering when you are in public, and are unable to social distance, to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.


Obituary - Gerald Arthur Tremblay

Gerald Arthur Tremblay, 93, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at his home in Schell City, MO following a illness of several months. Gerald was born July 21, 1928 in Fitchburg, MA to Napoleon Edward and Josephine Gertrude (Hamel) Tremblay. On April 23, 1955, he was united in marriage to Marie-Paule Fredette in Gardner, MA and she survives of the home.

Gerald was raised in Massachusetts and attended school there. He served in the United States Navy at the end of WWII. After his time in the service, he returned to Massachusetts where he spent the next 60 years working as a machinist, a job which included general construction, roofing, and plumbing. Following his retirement, he and Marie lived in Orlando, FL from 1990-1995. At that time, the couple bought a farm near Schell City which he farmed until he was 83. He has resided in Schell City for the past 26 years. Gerald was a member of the Church of Israel in Schell City. Past memberships included the American Legion, and Knights of Columbus, both in Gardner, MA.

In addition to his wife Marie, he is survived by five children, Diane Finnigan, Schell City, MO, Mark Tremblay, Schell City, MO, Bruce Tremblay, Murrells Inlet, SC, Lisa Enright, Harwood, MO, and Susan Chiras, Orlando, FL; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four siblings, Maurice Tremblay, MA, Roland Tremblay, AZ, Robert Tremblay, IL, and Joyce Rollins, NH. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, CJ “Red” Finnigan; two brothers, John Tremblay, and Arthur Tremblay; two sisters, Lillian Lacombe, and Evelyn Tremblay.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at the Church of Israel in Schell City with Pastor Dan Gayman officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.

Robert “Bobby” Dean Crepeau, age 58 of Archie, Missouri died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at his home in Archie. He was born February 3, 1963 to Robert Roland and Myrtle Louise Thomas Crepeau in Lynwood, California.

Bobby is survived by a son, Robert Timothy “Tim” Crepeau of Archie, Missouri; two daughters, Rosemary Gregg and husband Dustin of Archie, Missouri and Sara Combs and husband David of Harrisonville, Missouri; his mother, Louise Bisby and husband Fred of Butler, Missouri; a brother, Howard “Jerry” Crepeau and wife Karla of Butler, Missouri; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Roland Crepeau; and two sisters, Boneva Grigsby and 12-year old Cynthia Crepeau.

Paul Wayne Hunt, age 54 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, August 13, 2021 at his home in Butler. He was born September 24, 1966 to Paul William and Sharon Kay Cook Hunt in Altus, Oklahoma.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Hunt of Butler, Missouri; one son, Alex Hunt of Butler, Missouri; one daughter, Sonjia Preston and husband Aaron of Harrisonville, Missouri; one sister, Susie Greenfield and husband Curtis of West Plains, Missouri; his mother, Sharon Hunt of Marshfield, Missouri; and a nephew and niece, Adrian Greenfield and Alysha Greenfield both of West Plains, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Paul William Hunt; father-in-law, Robert E. Sullins; brother-in-law, Robert D. Sullins; and several uncles and aunts.
