Missouri electric co-op lineworkers continue work in Louisiana

From AMEC: Missouri electric co-op lineworkers continue work in Louisiana:

The work of Missouri’s electric cooperative linemen continues in Louisiana as they help restore power to members of Dixie Electric Membership Corporation (DEMCO), Baton Rouge. The lineworkers have been met with an abundance of Southern hospitality as they work long hours in challenging conditions to turn all the lights back on.

DEMCO’s 9,000-mile system suffered extreme damage leaving most of its 112,000 members without power after Ida hit one week ago .The swampy, difficult terrain and sweltering conditions make the restoration efforts that much more challenging.

Their work hasn’t gone unnoticed as they’ve been buoyed by locals. While Gascosage Electric Cooperative crews were working on lines southeast of Baton Rouge, drivers dropped off multiple bags of drinks for them to enjoy. Tri-County Electric Cooperative lineworkers were treated to a rib-eye lunch between changing out poles, and Black River Electric’s crew got burgers and fries from a local restaurant.

The lineworkers’ days are long and tiring with breakfast starting at 5 a.m. and dinner ending at 10:30 p.m. In between their focus is only on restoring power. DEMCO had more than 86,000 members without power when they arrived on Wednesday. As of Sunday morning that number is just above 40,000.

However, their work is far from done. As the number of outages go down, the difficulty of repairing each outage will increase.

Missouri’s 173 lineworkers are joined by hundreds of other cooperative lineworkers from Kentucky, Oklahoma and Florida as well as contractors from across the county.

Missouri’s restoration efforts in Louisiana are spearheaded by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives. The Jefferson City-based association represents all 47 of Missouri’s electric cooperatives.

Obituary - Mary Ruth Martina Owens

Mary Ruth Martina Owens, born on August 3, 1998 in Honolulu, Hawaii as (Jessie Perry), passed away on Thursday September 2, 2021 at home in Belton, Missouri from an accidental overdose at the age of 23.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at St. Sabina Catholic Church, 700 Trevis Ave., Belton, Missouri 64012. A funeral Mass will be held following visitation.

As I’ve been here painfully writing about Mary and seeing the outpouring of love from family and friends; from the stories, pictures, and videos of how kindhearted she was, so loving and her loving generosity speaks volumes about the shining star she was. Mary was really a forced to be reckoned with lots of sass. I’d call audacious flair and spirit for life.

A graduate of Belton High School, she worked at Jose Peppers and became fast friends and won over the hearts of many. Loved and missed is such an understatement!

She was preceded in death by her mother Beverly E. Owens; grandparents, Mary Ruth Chaffin and Homer Chaffin, and Dean M. Duett and Babe Ruth Duett.

She is survived by her father William A. Owens; brother, Anthony Owens; second mother, Linda Peters all of Belton, Missouri; sister, Dena M. McCarty and brother in law James McCarty of Cape Fair, Missouri; many aunts, uncles, nieces nephews and cousins; biological family in Hawaii, birth mother, Evangeline Ku`uipoo Perry; three sisters, Katrina Villanueva, Myrissa Perry, and Krysha Belen; three brothers, Joshua Perry, Justin Perry, and Jody Perry.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to Guiding Light online at https://guidinglightworks.org/ or to Cullen Funeral Home to assist in funeral expenses.
