Obituary - William Allen Lanning

William “Bill” Allen Lanning, 61, passed away October 4, 2021 after a short illness. A visitation (2-4 PM), followed by a celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at Rock Brook Church, 1715 E. 173rd Street, Belton, Missouri.

Bill was born on February 4th, 1960 in Paola, Kansas. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UMKC and a Master’s Degree from KU in Social Work. Bill Worked for the KCPD for five years and thirty-three years for the Veteran’s Administration before retiring in 2019. In his retirement Bill enjoyed driving for Max Motors and serving on the board at Joshua House.

Bill loved life... he loved sports.. and he didn’t really know a stranger. He gave of himself endlessly and tirelessly. Bill had seven different National Disaster Deployments with Red Cross, four of which were Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 at Ground Zero, Hurricane Dennis and Hurricane Floyd. He was a certified High School football referee and baseball umpire. He enjoyed the Jayhawks, Royals, and Chiefs and most recently the Georgia Bulldogs.

Bill loved music.. He was a member of the “Soldiers of the Cross” Gospel Quartet. His beautiful Tenor voice also graced weddings, church services, choirs and everyday life.

Bill was a believer in the Word, always faithful to it and lived it to its fullest.

Bill loved family.. he was encouraging and supportive. He opened his heart and gave selflessly of his time to them. In turn, he was deeply loved and respected and will be greatly missed. Bill was proceeded in death by his parents, Don and Lorraine Lanning, as well as his first wife, Nena. Bill and Nena leave a son, Jeremy Lanning (Katie). In 2014 Bill married Cecilia, and gained two sons Brett Dreas (Tricia) and Spencer Dreas. Bill was “Poppy” to six grandchildren—Crew, Braelynn, Avelee, Nena, Blaike and Banks. He also survived by his parents-in-law, Thomas and Ernestine Iseman, brothers and sisters Donald Lee Lanning (Janis), Paul Bruce Lanning (Linda), Becky Beyer (Bob), Sharon Davis (Mike), Karen McDonald (Benni), Kevin Iseman (Tricia) and many nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.

Obituary - Bobbie Jean Bohannon

Bobbie Jean Bohannon, 98, of Harrisonville, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 8th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Atkinson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Urich Cemetery in Urich, Missouri.

Bobbie was born on September 1, 1923 in Urich, Missouri, the daughter of Robert Perry and Beulah Marie (Ashbrooke) Overbey. She grew up in Urich, graduating from Urich High School. Bobbie met the love of her life, Orley Nivel Bohannon, and they were married on June 21, 1942 in Flint, Michigan. They enjoyed 36 years together before his passing on March 6, 1979. Bobbie lived in Michigan and Kansas City before settling down in Cass County, spending most of her life in Harrisonville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Harrisonville, then later Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, and lastly Antioch Southern Baptist Church.

Bobbie enjoyed reading, completing crosswords and jigsaw puzzles, and watching the Game Show Network, especially Jeopardy. She also had a love for baseball, whether it was watching her son, Larry, her grandkids, or the KC Royals, she likely would ask you to wait until the game was over to do other things, regardless of what it might be, including once when she wanted to postpone a surgery. She was a true matriarch and always put her family at the forefront, often found reading or playing games with her grandchildren, because she always had the time to give to them. Bobbie was blessed to be able to go camping with her daughters, Kay and Vicki, across the country to wherever they could set up their tent. This resulted in trips to over 40 states, the last one being when Bobbie was 87 and they camped throughout South Dakota. After she went into the nursing home, she began to enjoy sitting and watching her hummingbird feeders outside of her window. Bobbie will be missed by all those who knew her, but leaves behind many wonderful memories.

Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orley Nivel Bohannon; her sons: Larry Wayne and Jerry Lee Bohannon; her brothers: Marion Reed Overbey, William Stephen Overbey, and Max Eugene Overbey; and her sisters: Nadine Lucille Smith and Phyllis Madeline Edwards. She is survived by her daughters: Karen Kay Wallace and Vicki Sue (Rick) Mitchell; her 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obituary - Madeline Jean (Wilson) Woodfin

Madeline Jean Woodfin passed away Monday, October 4th at her home in Butler, MO at the age of 80. She was born November 10, 1940 in Bates County to Thomas Leonard and Margaret Irene Wilson. Madeline married William K. Woodfin on May 11, 1964.

She leaves behind her husband Bill of the home; sons, Tom and wife Karen hood of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Dean Hood of Norman, Oklahoma; daughters, Mary and husband Doug Weaver of Weatherford, Texas; Melissa and Michael Massey of Butler, Missouri; grandchildren, Dustin and Adrienne Weaver, Monica Curtis, Brandon Hood, Katie Hood, and Madilyn Hood; great-grandchildren, Easton and Owen Curtis.

Madeline had many hobbies, but her greatest love was designing and making quilts. She was a member of the Rockville Quilt Club Her hand-stitching and creative designs won her multiple Grand Champion awards at the Bates County Fair, as well as 1st Place and Judges’ Choice.

She was also survived by sisters, Rebecca Humble, Kathi (Lynn) Plain, Barbara Condor; and sister-in-law, Freda Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Tom Wilson.

Madeline’s wishes were to be cremated with no services. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 23 at the Rich Hill American Legion from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Obituary - Sherrie Doody

The world lost a one-of a kind woman. Sherrie Doody passed away surrounded by those who loved her on October 4, 2021. She was the biological mother of Ashley Caviel and Michael Doody although she was considered a surrogate mother to countless others. She leaves behind 3 grandchildren, 9 brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews that she cherished dearly.

Sherrie lived her 57 years of life on her own terms. For most of her life, you rarely found her without a Mountain Dew in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Most knew her as a tenacious, hard-working, generous, strong-willed soul who never left a word unsaid. She had a unique way of connecting with people and saw the good in everyone.

She had a passion for caring for others. She spent much of her life dedicated to caring for the elderly. She was a collector of things. What the collection was just depended on the season of life she was in. Her treasures were many. Most would say, “they never met someone like Sherrie and likely never will again.” She was loved and held a special space in the hearts of those who knew her.

Sherrie had a relationship with Christ and her faith saw her through many aspects of life. She graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1983. She resided in Butler, MO and surrounding towns throughout her life.

At Sherrie’s request there will be no formal visitation or funeral. However, those who wish to pay tribute to her during a Celebration of Life are invited to do so. It will be held on Sunday, October 10th from 2PM – 4PM at Trent’s BBQ 720 E Walnut St, Rich Hill, MO 64779.

I don’t think a relationship exists like the one my mother and I had. It was by no means a typical mother/daughter relationship, but it worked for us. My heart can rest easy knowing she is now at peace.

My mother taught me the meaning of how to hustle, be ambitious, and raised me to know no limits. She instilled limitless confidence in me. Because of her I approach life without self-doubt.

As an adult, I can recognize that we lived in poverty. But as a child, I had no clue. She was a provider and made sure my brother and I never went without and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we wanted and more. This is a testament to who she was as a person. She went without in order to be able to give to others.

Those who knew her – loved her. She made special connections with people. She was genuine and authentic. She did things her own way and was relentless in doing so. She did things to the max. You knew with her it was always going to be something. My mother did the best she could. And she gave her all.

Her life lasted 57 years but she left an impression that will last a lifetime. It’s time to hang up the gloves and rest easy, mom.
