One arrested after pursuit in Barton County

On October 3rd, 2021 at approximately 0737hrs a Barton County Sheriffs Deputy was dispatched to Mindenmines, Mo for a past tense vehicle theft. Once on scene the Deputy gathered the information about the vehicle and also learned that a dump trailer was attached to the truck as well at the time it was taken. Once the Deputy cleared the scene he advised other Deputies and the Sheriff of the theft. 

At approximately 1030hrs a citizen called 911 and stated they were following the vehicle they believed was stolen from Mindenmines on O Highway in rural Barton County. The Deputy that took the report was near the area and responded. 

Once the Deputy got behind the vehicle and activated his lights and siren the vehicle sped up and failed to yield to the Deputy. The Deputy initiated a pursuit with the vehicle which reached speeds of 100mph. 

The stolen vehicle at one point forced a motorist off the roadway. Sheriff Simpson was able to get in to position and deploy a tire deflation device that successfully struck 6 tires on the vehicle and trailer. The suspect continued to drive for approximately 6 more miles entering the city limits of Liberal, Mo. 

The vehicle came to a stop when it entered a field off of K Highway and the driver realized he had no where to go due to being surrounded by patrol cars and no tires to get him anywhere. Deputies were able to take the suspect in to custody without incident. 

The suspect was identified as Blake Lundberg (39) of Ft. Scott, KS. Lundberg has been charged with Tampering with a motor vehicle 1st Degree, Resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a substantial risk to the public, and Possession of Controlled substance for the Suspected Methamphetamine he admitted to throwing from the vehicle while being pursued. Lundberg is currently being held on a Capias warrant for his charges. 

"Sheriff Simpson wants to remind citizens to lock your vehicles and personal belongings when they are unattended. Theft crimes are still on the rise and we will do our best to locate your items and return them to you. 

Sheriff wants people to understand as well that we are not always working just one incident at a time, we have multiple investigations that are ongoing and they all need attention. Please help us by securing your belongings."

KC Area Weekend Forecast

There may be some areas of fog out there this morning, which will dissipate within a few hours after sunrise. That will give way to decreasing clouds through the day with near normal temperatures. We’ll see a warming trend for Saturday as highs climb into the mid 80s. 

Well above normal temperatures around 90 degrees can be expected Saturday with gusty south winds to around 30 mph It looks mainly dry for Sunday with above normal temperatures. 

A strong cold front will move into the area late in the day, leading to a chance of thunderstorms. late in the evening.

Miami R-1 will once again "highly recommend" masks beginning Thursday, October 7, 2021.

Our current level of COVID-19 positive cases along with individuals under quarantine is now below the 10% level which originally triggered the mask requirement. 

Please be aware that masks are still required on district provided transportation. This includes school buses and district vans.

Obituary - Mary M. Dahmer

Mary Marie (Cowan) Dahmer, age 94, of Nevada, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 after a lengthy illness. She was born on September 30, 1927 in Crawford County, KS near Walnut, KS to Charles Oscar Cowan and Grace Olive (Boileau) Cowan. On September 5, 1948, she was married to Glenn “Plute” Dean Dahmer in Mapleton, KS and he preceded her in death on September 28, 2003.

Mary was raised on a farm in Bourbon County, KS. She graduated from Fulton High School. Following graduation, she worked at Western Insurance Companies in Ft. Scott, KS from 1944 to 1948. After her sons were born, she went to work for Joseph L. Pohl Contractor, INC in 1957. In 1970, she was elected Secretary of the corporation and was also named Office Manager for the firm. She continued in that capacity until her retirement in 2012, completing 55 years of service.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Nevada where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. In more recent years, she began attending the Methodist Church of Nevada and was a constituent member. Her hobbies were knitting and quilting.

Mary was a very devoted Mom and Grannie and loved dearly by her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mary enjoyed outings of all kinds, especially when visiting family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and treasured her trips with her son to Colorado to visit family as well as her Branson trips with her siblings. More recently, when she wasn’t able to travel distances, she enjoyed her monthly outings to Ft. Scott.

Mary is survived by grandchildren Amy (Dahmer) Clausen and husband Derrick of Independence, MO, Amber (Dahmer) Jenkins and Jeff Pearish of Nevada, and Aaron Dahmer of Nevada; great-grandchildren Kendra (Bradley) Meyers of Joplin, MO, Jaycee Jenkins, Callee Jenkins, Wyatt Jenkins, Allie Marie Dahmer and Addison Mae Dahmer of Nevada; great-great grandchildren Axel and Nash; daughter-in-law Candi Dahmer of Nevada, brother Bill Cowan of Nevada, sister Charlene Bruns of Ft. Scott, and sister-in-law Faye Cowan of Ft. Scott; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn and sons Gregg Dahmer in 2019 and Brent Dahmer in 1982; siblings Metta Walker and her husband Mark, Irmal Smith and her husband Louis, Floyd “Buck” Cowan, Ruth Walker and husband Jake, Pauline Norris and husband Everett “Soapy”, and Opal Brillhart and husband Ed; brother-in-law Maurice Bruns and sister-in-law Norma Cowan; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Any donations can be made in her name to the NRMC Foundation in care of the Ferry Funeral Home.

Obituary - Theresa Joan Draper

Theresa Joan Draper age 72 of Lexington, Missouri formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri was born December 27, 1948 in Morganfield, Kentucky the daughter of Kenneth Williams and Margaret Mary (Leonard) Corcoran. She departed this life on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Riverbend Heights Health and Rehabilitation, Lexington, Missouri at the age of 72 years, 9 months and 5 days.

Theresa was a homemaker. She will be remembered as a loving, kind and always thoughtful of others. Especially her Kansas City roots of family and friends. Her memories will carry us on. We will never forget her wonderful smile and the love she gave to her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Theresa is survived by two daughters, Dani Burch, Greenwood, Missouri, Renee Wilcher, Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, Ashley (Logan), Molly, David, Deim (Sean), Travis, Jay Allen and Tyler Anne; three sisters, Mary Corcoran, Kansas City, Missouri; Colleen Wells, Roeland Park, Kansas, Anne Oldum, Aurora, Colorado; other relatives and a host of friends.

"She will be remembered as loving, kind and always thoughtful of others".

Obituary - Esther Breeden

Esther Breeden, 81 of Butler, Missouri passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021 at her home in Butler. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009). 

A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral Wednesday, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Esther was born June 7, 1940 in Miami, New Mexico to Esteban and Ruby Baca Archuleta. She worked most of her life as a teacher’s aide in Kansas City before retiring due to her health. Esther was a member of the Harrisonville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and truly loved her ministry. Fall was her favorite time of year, she enjoyed the colors, the weather, and sitting outside drinking lemonade. Esther loved meeting new people and decorating. So she could often be found “treasure hunting” in the area thrift stores. Esther was a strong lady who enjoyed life and especially her family.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Ernest and Alfred Archuleta. She is survived by her daughter Carol Breeden, son Mike Breeden, and son Larry Breeden, grandchildren, Brian Hill, Larry Hill, Kelly Key, Ruby Breeden (Dana), and Dominica Breeden (Dan), and great-grandson Gabriel Nelson. She also leaves behind her brothers, Steven and Robert Archuleta, sister Margaret Magnuson and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
