Obituary - Clyde Frederick Tarter

Graveside services for Clyde F. Tarter of Butler, Missouri will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Mt. Clyde Frederick Tarter, age 83 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Butler Center in Butler, Missouri. He was born August 3, 1938 to Cortes Alvy Tarter Sr. and Loara Lucille Porter Tarter in Kansas City, Missouri.

Clyde is survived by a special nephew, David Tarter and wife Debbie of Butler, Missouri; a niece, Meg Ross and husband Jason of College Station, Texas; three sisters, Opal Hinton, Dorothy Doss and Joan Clapper; and numerous other nephews and nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James, Cortes and Bill Tarter; and a sister, Julia Nighswonger.

State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are so excited to announce this week’s State Farm Student Athlete of the week Katie Tourtillott from Rich Hill. Katie is a senior and starting setter for the Lady Tigers volleyball team. Katie was nominated by her Coach Diana Smith. 

Coach Smith stated “Katie achieved 1000 assists in her junior year and is only 57 away from 1500. She is currently our co-captain and continues to consistently lead the team with her outstanding play on the court. 

She also works hard in the classroom and was Academic All State last season. She is also a member of NHS, FFA, STUCO and the A+ program.” When we asked Katie to tell us something she has learned from playing sports that she can apply later in life she stated “I’ve learned how to commit to something fully. Also, I’ve learned how to work with others and work through disagreements.” We also asked Katie what she believes it takes to be a leader and to excel in her sport of choice.

She stated “to be a leader you have to not let your feelings get in the way and always build others up by vocalizing your support of those on your team. To become an elite athlete you have to have mental toughness and move on when you make a mistake. Becoming successful takes a lot of commitment not only of your time but also consistent hard work.” Katie hopes to continue her career in volleyball and play in college after she graduates.

She would like to major in biochemistry with plans to attend medical school. It was such a pleasure meeting Katie and Coach Smith and we wish the Lady Tigers the best of luck next week as they take on Adrian, Jasper, and Liberal.

Obituary - Wayne Jackson Houston

Wayne Jackson Houston, age 93, resident of Richards, MO, died Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott, KS. He was born on September 7, 1928, in Bagnall Dam, MO, the son of Andrew Jackson and Ida Mae Houston. 

He graduated from Richards, MO high school. He served in the U. S. Army. Wayne worked his entire life on the farm. He loved his tractors. In fact, he was still operating tractors up until a year ago. 

Wayne worked for several years in groundskeeping for Fort Scott Community College until retirement. He married Lois Darlene Cooper on July 20, 1981, in Fort Scott. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2017. He enjoyed fishing and hunting through the years. He was a member of the Unity Lodge #495 Richards, MO, and the Community of Christ Church in Fort Scott.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Ater and wife Pam, Nevada, MO, and Gregory D. Houston and wife Linda, Richards, MO; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Lois, he was preceded in death by 2 sons, Gary Houston, and Ron Ater; a brother, Willard Houston; a sister, Lois Cooper; and his parents.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 12th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to either Care to Share or Community of Christ Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Two Adrian teenagers escape serious injury in Bates County rollover crash

On October 7th around 6:30pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at E Highway and CR 143 in rural Adrian.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2003 Ford Escape driven by a 16 year old male juvenile from Adrian began to skid and veered off the right side of the roadway twice before overturning.

Both the driver and a 15 year old male passenger also from Adrian refused medical treatment at the scene of this crash.
