Obituary - George Junior Williams

George Junior Williams, 71, of La Cygne, Kansas died at 2:39 am, Monday, October 11, 2021 at Promise Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas.

He was born in Topeka, Kansas on November 7, 1949, the son of Loren "Lee" and Ruby M. (Eiserman) Williams. He married Linda Kay (Stokes) Grizzle on April 2, 1979 in Miami, Oklahoma. He worked for Wade's Quarries as a heavy equipment operator from 1975 to the early 1990s. He had to retire due to health issues.

He enjoyed getting of the house, taking road trips. He enjoyed fishing for bass, catch and release only. He enjoyed riding his three wheel bicycle until he could no longer do that. Connie, Bonnie and Gale are grateful to George for being there when they needed him most.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Linda on December 18, 2014; one son, David Williams; one brother, Michael Williams.

Survivors include, two sons, Gale Grizzle (Jennifer) and John Williams (Janice); three daughters, Connie Curnette, Bonnie LaFoe (Michael), and Sharon Phillips (Steve); two brothers, Ernie Williams and Norman Williams; four grandchildren, Kyle Grizzle, Adam Grizzle, Amanda Curnutte, and Kayla Curnutte; four great-grandchildren, Allie, Andie, Bishop and Raven.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 15, 2021 at Schneider Funeral Home, La Cygne Chapel at 2:30 pm. Burial will follow in La Harpe Cemetery, La Harpe, Kansas. Obituary - Robert "Bobby" Sherman Cameron

Robert "Bobby" Cameron, 69 of Cole Camp Missouri passed away October 2, 2021 at his home in Cole Camp. Cremation with private family inurnment in Cole Camp Cemetery. Robert "Bobby" Sherman Cameron was born June 25, 1962 in Smithville, Missouri to Sherman and Betty McClary Cameron. Bobby was the second child of eleven born to his parents. He attended Nowlin Junior High, but had to quit during the 9th grade to assist the family financially due to his mother's health.

On July 3, 1980 Bobby was united in marriage to Linda Beversten, and adopted her three boys, Richard, John, and Dan. He was exceptionally talented and could do anything he set his mind to, welding, auto repair, heating, and cooling, ceramic tile, and roofing, just to mention a few. Each one he did quite well. Bobby was also an avid fisherman, always bringing home strings of fish.

Bobby was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother and father, his sister Theresa Miller, nephew Joshua Cameron, niece Brandy Pitchell and granddaughter Kimberly Cameron. He is survived by his wife of 41 years Linda Cameron, sons Richard, John, and Dan, six grandchildren, Jennifer, Zachary, Jessica, Breanna, Reanna, and Ruger, and two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Brennen. He also leaves behind nine siblings, Ricky, Linda, Steve, Sharon, Sandy, Danny, Vicki, Donna, and Don, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Obituary - Susan Krouch

Susan “Susie” Krouch (Van Arsdale), 82, of Nevada, Missouri, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, October 10, 2021, at Nathan Richard Health Care Center following a short stay for Skilled Nursing services.

Susan was born September 23, 1939, as the Great depression was ending, and the sparks were beginning to start the flames of World War II. Susie was born to middle aged parents Donald N. Van Arsdale and Virginia Van Arsdale (Robinson). She was born in Omaha, Nebraska. She had two brothers Charles, 15 and James, 13 at the time when she was born.

Susie was raised where the family resided in Beatrice, Nebraska. She was baptized at the family church, Christ Church Episcopal, in Beatrice on March 23, 1940. When she was six years old, her father bought a farm, “Breadtray”, near Lampe, Missouri on the White River and the family later moved to Springfield, Missouri. Both brothers had left home by that time and were serving in the military during WWII. Susie and her friends enjoyed many summers and vacations at Breadtray where the White River became Table Rock Lake. Over the past 50 plus years there has been many family trips to that area that always included a reminiscing drive to Breadtray.

Susie attended Rountree Grade School, Jarrett Middle School and Central High School in Springfield. She graduated from Park View High School in Springfield, Missouri in 1957. She was a member of the first graduating High School class from Parkview. She always enjoyed attending the High School Class Reunions over the past years.

Following High School, Susie attended Gulf Park College for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi. The college sponsored a European Touring Trip and Susie and her mother traveled through Holland, France, Germany and Italy in a VW Motor van with other students, her teacher and guide. Susie also traveled to Yellowstone National Park for two summers of 1959 and 1960 where she worked as a “Hash Hussie” at Mammoth Lodge in Yellowstone. She talked about that adventure numerous times over the years.

She then attended College at Missouri University in Columbia, Missouri. She became a Chi Omega sister and graduated with an undergraduate degree in education. She then traveled west towards Denver, Colorado with a friend to start her teaching career.

Susie taught at a school in the Denver suburbs for two years. Her roommate set her up on a blind date to the Denver Stock Show with her eventual husband, James “Jim” W Krouch. She was impressed with his knowledge of the stockyard. Many weekends were spent on the road to Cheyenne, WY to visit Jim and his family and they eventually became engaged.

Susie and Jim were married in Evergreen, Colorado on August 21, 1965. They were married for 52 years before Jim’s unexpected passing in March of 2017. Susie taught 5th grade for the Laramie County School District in Cheyenne, WY for several years but retired from teaching when they had children. They had 2 children Kevin James Krouch and Kathleen Grace Evans (Krouch).

Susie spent many years involved in many different activities over the years. She belonged to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for many years. She managed the St. Mark’s Clothes Hanger, served on the Altar Guild and ECW. Susie and Jim later converted to Catholicism and attended St. Mary’s Cathedral in Cheyenne, Wyoming starting in 2006.

Susie was a 39-year Member of PEO. She joined PEO Chapter S of Cheyenne, WY and later became a member of PEO Chapter DW of Nevada, Missouri when she relocated. She served every position of PEO except Treasurer. Susie belonged to the Cheyenne Women’s Civic League and enjoyed making things for their yearly Christmas House. She was also famous for her bakery foods and won many blue ribbons at the county fair for her baked breads. She was a lap swimmer who went and swam every morning before dawn at the Cheyenne Municipal Pool. She became part of the “pool pals” group who had spent time swimming together every morning for over 20 years. She also spent time volunteering with Jim as a pink lady at the Cheyenne Regional Hospital gift shop and front desk.

Susie and Jim spent their retired years traveling together with an RV across the country. They traveled to see friends and family in Missouri, Arizona, New Mexico, Illinois, and traveled as far as Oregon with the many adventures. They spent lots of time with their son Kevin in the Saratoga area in the Rocky Mountains camping. Susie moved to Nevada, Missouri in November of 2018 to live closer to her daughter Katie and her grandchildren and great grandchild. She attended St Mary’s Catholic Church and attended Alter Guild meetings. She had wonderful neighbors in her new Stonegate community.

Susie was preceded by death by her loving husband James Krouch, grandson Brandan Evans, brother Charles Van Arsdale, parents Donald and Virginia Van Arsdale. Susie is survived by her two Children: son Kevin J. Krouch, Cheyenne, Wy, and daughter Kathleen G Evans, Nevada, MO. Her three grandchildren Christopher A Evans, Kansas City, MO, Bradley A Evans, who is serving in the US Air Force, Oahu, HI, and David A Evans, Nevada, MO. Great Grandson Jace L. Gray-Evans of Nevada, MO. She is also survived by her brother James Van Arsdale of Grayslake, IL, niece Janet Van Arsdale of Highwood, IL, Niece Elizabeth Van Arsdale of Highwood, IL, Nephew Hugh Van Arsdale of Grayslake, IL, and nephew Donald Van Arsdale and Mary Van Arsdale of Maggie Valley, NC and 2 great nieces Karen Van Arsdale of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Renee Van Arsdale, of Seattle, WA.

An Ecumenical Service for the deceased will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at 6:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with visitation following from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. A funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 10:30 am at Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary in Cheyenne, WY with an inurnment service to follow at the St. Mary’s Columbarium. A light lunch will be served following the inurnment for family and close friends. Cremation is under the care of Ferry Funeral home, Nevada, Missouri.

Obituary - Keith Eric Kunkelman

Keith Eric Kunkelman, 61, Adrian, MO, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors.

Keith was born July 1, 1960 in Kansas City, MO, a son of Larry and Barbara (Scott) Kunkelman. He graduated from Raytown High School. In 1979, he married Jeanne Kilbane. To this union were born two daughters, Linda and Erica. Keith was a retired U.S. Navy Veteran. He had worked at Quintiles in Olathe, KS. Keith was very active in the Wounded Warriors Project.

Keith was preceded in death by his father, Larry Kunkelman, his mother, Barbara Scott, his grandmother, Blanche " G.G." Kunkelman, an infant sister who died at birth, Beverly Jean, sister-in-law, Debbie Kunkelman, two brothers-in-law, Danny Kilbane and Tim Kilbane, and a nephew, Joshua Kunkelman. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Kunkelman; his step-mother, Bonnie Kunkelman; two daughters, Linda Pearson (Skip) and Erica Rathbone (Chris); five grandchildren, Breanna Pearson, Garrett Pearson, Elizebeth Balance, Autumn Rathbone, and Zoie Rathbone; siblings: Floyd Kunkelman, Kevin Kunkelman (dad’s identical twin), Lynn Elsloo (Randy), Jason Kunkelman, Amy Kunkelman; brother-in-law, Robin Kilbane; 12 nephews and nieces, Alan, Jonathan (Tori), Megan, Alyssa, Tyler, Joshua, Marley, Jessica (Curtis), Lauren (Brandon), Cameron, Bradley, and Nikki, and 14 great-nephews and nieces.

Pilot Numbers Decline in Stats

The strong winds blowing a couple of thousand feet overhead last weekend spelled trouble for pilots. The Kansas City terminal forecast for Saturday night showed 45-knot (52 mph) winds from the southwest at 2000 feet above the ground; it was right on the money. Fortunately, the ground winds were only about half that. 

Seen in the airport area last week were a pair of Cessna Skylanes, a Piper Cherokee and a Cirrus SR-20. Mike Golden was down from New Century in his Cessna Turbo Centurion. Out of the local hangars, Brandt Hall had his Lark Commander up, Roy and Vicky Conley flew their Grumman Tr2, I made a photo run in the Cessna Skyhawk, and Lance Dirks and Jeffery Adams polished their skills in Cessna 150 flights. The SkyDive KC King Air made several jump runs when the winds allowed. Orvine and I took the Cessna 172 over to St. Louis Saturday, logging 1:40 elapsed time on the way over, 2:10 on the way back.

In St. Louis, I ran into a gentleman who owns a restored Aeronca L-16, like the one the Butler Civil Air Patrol squadron had here in the early 1960s. His is outfitted with some of the L-16B features like an enlarged tail fin and a supplemental wing fuel tank that can replenish the 13 gallon nose tank. He’s had it to the Oshkosh airshow several times, which is an all-day journey at 80 mph. His pristine bird puts to shame our old Champ that Christian Tucker and I were flying Thursday evening. 

One of the on-line newsletters last week had a segment about aviation statistics from the last 20 years that was rather interesting. Safety numbers are much improved, flight activity is trending up after a dip for the Covid crisis last year, and the average age of the piston-engine fleet is now about 40 years. The most interesting factoid was the decline in Private pilot numbers; there are now actually more Airline Transport pilots than privates. That will be changing, as student starts are up and the ATP is now a lot harder to get than it was 20 years ago.

Going through an ancient box of 35mm slides, I recently came across some photos of the old Flight Service Station, which stood where the memorial park is now located, beside the south drive. There are only a few other buildings in the background, as development had yet to take off 60 years ago. Surprisingly, the color in the old slides has held up pretty well; makes you wonder if the digital prints of today will still be as bright six decades from now.

Last week’s brain-teaser question wanted to know the meaning of the “GR” abbreviation in terminal weather reports displayed on the computerized weather readouts. It stands for “grauple”, what we used to call sleet, for frozen ice droplets falling from cold cumulus clouds. It’s a French term, foisted upon us by the globalists who think we need to adopt International references for FAA use.
