State Farm Student Athlete of the Week

We are so excited to announce this week’s State Farm student athlete Junior, Mason Diehl. Mason starts as safety for the Butler Bears and also plays offensively as a wide receiver. Mason was nominated by varsity Head Coach Gregg Webb. Webb stated “We had a lot of holes to fill after losing so many seniors last year, and when Mason was placed in one of those spots he has really stepped up and made the most of it. He is athletic and is not afraid of contact.” Mason had two receptions for a total of 125 yards and one touchdown in the big game last week against Warsaw. Both teams were going into that game undefeated and it was an important game for conference and district standing. Mason also had several stops on defense with big tackles last Friday night and helped the Bears get the win. Mason when asked what is something he can take away from playing sports and apply to later in life stated “that when you set your mind to something you can accomplish it.” When we asked what it takes to become an elite athlete he stated “he really feels it is the hard work you put in during the off season that makes a difference.” Mason is still undecided what his future plans will be after graduation. We want to congratulate Mason and the Bears on their successful season thus far. They are currently 7-0 and play at El Dorado Springs this evening at 7 p.m. Go Bears!

Obituary - Charles Roger Elliott

Charles Roger Elliott was born March 24,1937 to Harry Pierson and Louise (Hart) Elliott in Bogard, MO. He passed peacefully surrounded by his children and was received into the arms of the Lord on September 6, 2021 at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 13 days.

Charles graduated from Garden City High School in 1955. After graduation, he began working at Westinghouse. On February 14, 1958 he married his sweetheart, Iona Ann Allison. To this union four children were born: Jeff, Julie, Jeanie and Jerry. Charles went on to work at Bendix and then General Motors, where he completed the apprentice program and became a Tool and Die Maker. He spent many of his working years at the Leeds location, transferred to Arlington, TX, then retired from Fairfax. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Louise Elliott, siblings Jeanette Gudde, Kay Akins, Connie Wille, Chester Elliott and Ronnie Elliott, as well as his wife of 55 years, Iona Elliott. Charles is survived by his children, Jeff Elliott (Lindy) of Lee’s Summit, MO, Julie Blanchard (Randy) of Houston, TX, Jeanie Cook (David) of Lee’s Summit, MO and Jerry Elliott (Pauline) also of Lee’s Summit, MO, 13 grandchildren: Jace and Jesse Elliott, Ethan, Andrew and Alec Blanchard, Allison Anderson, Abbie and Ashlyn Cook, Amanda Lee, Austin and Alec Breed, Carson and Camryn Elliott, four great-grandchildren; siblings Mary Ellen Bowie, Clinton, MO, Larry Elliott, Kingsville, MO, Diana Kline, Orlando FL and Bob Elliott, Normandy, TN.

Charles had a lifelong love of fishing, western movies, clock making, model trains, tinkering with engines and motors and crossword puzzles.. He will be remembered for his sweet smile, strong work ethic and storytelling. He was the kind of man that made you want to pull up a chair and visit for a while.

Please join the family to remember and honor Charles at a Visitation/Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Garden City Community Center, Garden City, MO.

Family will hold private graveside services at a later date following cremation.

Obituary - Mary B. (Bre) Harrison

Mary Breanna Harrison age 42 of Peculiar, Missouri departed this life Monday, October 11, 2021 at Belton Regional Medical Center, Belton, Missouri.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 16, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2:30 at the Dickey Funeral Home with burial in the Peculiar Cemetery, Peculiar, Missouri.

Debbie Ann Moore, age 74 of Ada, Oklahoma died Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Baptist-Integris Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was born March 1, 1947 to Carl Francis and Juanita Marie Horney Graham in Alva, Oklahoma.

Debbie is survived by two sons, Britt Johnson and fiancé Lisa Bodey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Bryan Johnson and wife Banner of Durant, Oklahoma; one brother, Curtis Graham and wife Monina of Las Cruces, New Mexico; one sister, Nancy Baker and husband Jack of Butler, Missouri; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Preliminary hearing set for Nevada man charged with murder

On Friday October 15th at 10:00am a preliminary hearing will be held at the Vernon County Courthouse for Steven Sam Vignolo 62 of Nevada.

Vignolo who is charged with murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of 32 year old Justin Goolsby last month at the Pilot Truck Stop in Nevada. 

Mr. Vignolo is being represented by Public Defender Josh Baseley and Vernon County Associate Judge Brandon Fisher will preside of the hearing.
