Obituary - Linda Ruth Long

Linda Ruth (Miller) Long, 73, of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021 peacefully with her family by her side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with the family receiving friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, MO.

Linda was born to parents Paul V. and Alva Marie Miller on September 15, 1948 in Harrisonville, Missouri. Linda attended Harrisonville High School. She married Vern Long on October 1, 1971. They started their fifty year marriage in Freeman, Missouri but soon after moved and made Harrisonville their home. She worked as a certified nurse aide at ABC Health Center and at Golden Years Nursing Home for many years. She enjoyed the many residents she cared for but left to support her and her husband’s business, V&L Conoco. Linda helped at the station as often as she could but her first priority was her children. She spent the majority of her life as a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Alva Miller; her infant brother, Dennis Miller; brother, James Miller; and sister, Paula Sue Jackson. Linda is survived by her husband, Vern Long of Harrisonville; her son, David, and wife, Christy Hunter, of Peculiar; her daughter, Cindy, and husband, Steve Bunch, of Lee’s Summit; and her son, Clint, and his wife, Rebecca Long, of Harrisonville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Linda was a loving, caring, and compassionate person. She was nicknamed Bunga by her first grandchild and it carried on through every grandchild and great-grandchild thereafter. Linda was immensely proud of her family, leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories, and will leave a void in her families lives that will never be able to be filled.

Obituary - Robert Arlin Vaughn

Robert Arlin Vaughn, 86, Adrian, MO, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at the Medicalodge of Butler in Butler, MO. 


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, MO with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. 

Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Adrian Community Library.

New Sargent of Patrol appointed at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher announced on Friday that Deputy Zesar Huerta has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt. Huerta is working towards his Associates Degree in Business Management and should be finished next semester. 

Sgt. Huerta started out as a correctional officer with Cimarron Correctional Facility in Oklahoma. After graduating from the police academy at MSSU in 2017, Sgt. Huerta joined the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office. Since that time, Sgt. Huerta has held the county Dare officer position as well as being a Field Training Officer. 

Sheriff Mosher said, “Deputy “Z”, as he is commonly known by the kids in the schools, never hesitates to stop and talk to the kids, help someone change a tire or be a listening ear. I know in this new position he’ll continue to be a great asset to our community.”

Obituary -Michael Allen Bishop

Michael Allen Bishop, age 74 of Grove, Oklahoma formerly of Blue Mound, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021. He was born the son of Jacob T. and Erma O. Giffin Bishop on January 29, 1947 at Blue Mound, Kansas. Mike joined the United States Marines in 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1968. 

He married Bonnie Carter on May 6, 1968 in Summersville, Missouri to this union they were blessed with four children. From 1979 until his retirement in 2010, Mike or "MA" as he was known by his co-workers, was employed with Kansas City Power and Light at the La Cygne plant. Mike never met a stranger, loved "helping" his neighbors, enjoyed motorcycles, fishing, puzzles, yardwork, his family and especially his grandkids, he loved just being outdoors in general.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Waverly and Dan Bishop, sister in law, Kathy Bishop, brother in law, Ralph Stites and a nephew, Tim Bishop. Mike is survived by his loving wife of fifty three years, Bonnie, three sons, Chris and wife, Kendra, Eric and wife, Anna, Jeremy and wife, Megan, one daughter, Melissa Osenton and husband, Chad, two brothers, Roy Bishop and Les Bishop and wife, Vicky, one sister, Donna Stites, and eleven grandchildren, Javin, Gabbie, Mia, Kaleb, Kenzie, Ashton, Emma, Hope, Connor, Emersyn and Kenadee.

Memorial Service will be at 10 am, Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Parker. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm, Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. The family requests that visitors wear masks while attending the visitation and service.

Obituary - Richard "Rick" Courtois

Richard "Rick" Eugene Courtois, age 74, Pleasanton, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021. He was born in Pleasanton, Kansas on February 24, 1947 the son of Charles and Freda Johnson Courtois. He graduated from Pleasanton High School. Rick was united in marriage to Margie Jean Orton on December 4, 1965. To this union, three children were born. Margie preceded him in death on September 29, 1978. He worked at Rylie Equipment and Contracting for many years before enjoying retirement.

He was also preceded in death by his parents. Rick is survived by a son, Richard E. Courtois II and wife Janelle, two daughters, Lisa Degrande and Jeannie Anderson and husband Terry, a sister, Charlene Allison(Jerry), eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held 2:30 pm Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Pleasanton Cemetery. Individual respects and guest registry can be made from 10 am to 4 pm Friday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel.
