Obituary - Linda Ann Nelson

Linda Ann Nelson, age 81, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Foxwood Springs Retirement Home in Raymore, Missouri.

On December 18, 1939, Linda was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Lynn Loomis and Helen (Fritz) Loomis.

After graduating from high school, Linda achieved her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She invested many happy years teaching grade school.

Linda was a devoted wife, a loving mom, and an adoring, engaged Grandma. God wired her to love teaching, helping, and serving others; she was a true and loyal friend and was known for being hospitable, kind, welcoming to all, and making people feel cared about.

Linda loved her sisters and extended family, and she enjoyed butterflies, trees, sweets, sunsets, traveling, writing poetry, bird watching, bridge, reading, sewing, Bible study, walking, taking care of the environment, and being generous. Linda delighted in being with her family at Lake Madison and appreciated many of life’s simplest pleasures like finding four-leaf clovers.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Lynn and Helen Loomis.

She is survived by her loving husband of over sixty years, Joel Nelson; son, Timothy Nelson (Dona); daughter, Marcia Petrossian (Michael); two sisters, Marilyn Hansen (Robert) and Kay Hegler (Ron Hall); and six grandchildren, David Nelson (Hannah), Philip Nelson, Jonathan Nelson, Hildsy Petrossian, Gracelyn Petrossian, and Joella Petrossian.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6401Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri, 64113, with a visitation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to: The KU Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research Gift Fund in memory of Linda A. Nelson. 4350 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Fairway, KS 66205.


Wednesday's Severe Weather Outlook

Late this afternoon into early this evening, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop in eastern Kansas, working east through the early evening hours.

A few of the storms may be strong, potentially producing strong gusty winds or an isolated tornado.

The best chance for severe weather is from 4-8 PM across eastern Kansas into western Missouri- mainly south of highway 36.

Update: Live mortar round detonated in the Rich Hill area!

If you are in the Rich Hill area a short time ago you would have heard a large explosion.

Everything is ok and that explosion was controlled by the US Army Bomb squad from Ft Riley Ks.

They detonated a live mortar round found earlier today. It’s reported that this was originally found approximately a year ago and placed on a shelf and forgotten.

The area has been deemed safe and emergency crews are currently clearing the area.

Obituary - Shirley Ann Chevalier

Shirley Ann Chevalier, age 85, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021 after a long battle with dementia.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021 at St. Sabina Catholic Church, 700 Trevis Ave., Belton, Missouri 64012 followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held after mass at Belton Cemetery.

Shirley was born in Marshall, Missouri on December 19, 1935 to Clarence Tomlinson and Freda (Gramlich) Tomlinson. After graduating high school, Shirley continued her education at Missouri Valley and Longview. For many years she worked in civil service. In life Shirley was blessed with three sons, Danny, Bruce, and Jerry. She was a member of St. Sabina Catholic Church. Shirley enjoyed going to old country concerts, playing slot machines, bargain shopping, and enjoyed a glass of wine or a margarita. She would also proudly admit to anyone that she could yodel. More than anything Shirley cherished the time with her family during the holidays and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events all over the Midwest.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Freda Tomlinson.

She is survived by her three sons, Danny Chevalier, Bruce Chevalier (Sherie), and Jerry Chevalier; seven grandchildren, Joe Chevalier (Alisha), Matt Chevalier, Terry Beeley, Caleb Chevalier, Molly Chevalier, Cole Chevalier (Alissa), and Blake Chevalier (Kelly); and numerous great grandchildren.

Obituary - Marjorie Lee Elliott

Marjorie Lee Elliott was born February 3, 1934 to Ward Hosler and Helen Whitten-Hosler in Hale, Missouri. She was born into a family of 7 siblings. She married Leo Robert Elliott on December 5, 1949 in Louisb
urg, Kansas and had eight children.

She was a loving mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and great grandmother to all those around her. She was a kind, gentle soul who made all those around her smile. She would give someone the clothes off her back as long as it kept them warm. She would let anyone come and sit for hours if they needed. She was a grandmother to all.

Marge died November 6, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Ethel Hanavan, Betty Louise Hosler, and Helen Janice Freeman, her brothers Robert Hosler and Kenneth Hosler, her daughters Cindy Mayden and Lori Rearden, her sons Ronald Elliott and Jerry Elliott, and her granddaughter Hollie Rearden.

She left behind her brother Jerry Hosler, her daughters Brenda Bell, Debbie Miller, and Teresa Gebhardt, her son Steven Elliott, and an abundance of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Obituary - Stephen Ray “Steve” Yost

Stephen Ray “Steve” Yost, age 65, of Athens, Alabama passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Athens Limestone Hospital.

Steve was a graduate of Miami High School located in Amoret, Missouri, class of 1976. Right after high school Steve began his career in the construction industry which led him to Yates Center, Kansas where he was able to work his way up to the General Civil Superintendent at Wolf Creek Power Plant. 

He married the love of his life, Joy Leslie Wainscott on September 6, 1977 in Yates Center, Kansas. Steve’s career later took him and his wife to North Carolina where they welcomed a son, Joshua Ray Yost. In 1986, the family moved to Athens, AL when Steve began work at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. He worked at the plant for several years before transitioning to work as a contractor for NASA supporting facility maintenance and construction. He gained several awards and more than anything life long friends during this time. After his retirement, he started Yost and Son Construction with his son, Joshua Yost doing home remodeling and rental property renovation/maintenance. 

Steve accomplished much in his life, including foreman, carpenter, coach, father and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting with friends, spending time with family, and most of all spoiling his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents Lonnie and Barbara Yost, sister Verna Haines, and brother Billy Yost. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 44 years, Joy Leslie Wainscott Yost; son, Joshua R. Yost and wife Hillary; 3 grand-daughters, Piper, Sadie, and Mackenzie; sister and her husband, Michelle and Gene Schroeder and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of life is not scheduled at this time, but will be handled at a later date for the family to receive friends and loved ones. There will be a celebration scheduled in his hometown of Butler, MO and another at his long-time home of Athens, AL. 

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the wonderful care that he received while at Athens Limestone Hospital and for all of the nursing and doctor staff that made personal connections during this time. Military grade bomb found in Rich Hill

At around 9:00hrs today, deputies were called to assist Rich Hill Police Department on a report of a military grade mortar found in a city owned building. Apparently an employee was looking for some tools in the building when the item was discovered.

Upon arrival of deputies, contact was made with Lee’s Summit Bomb Squad who referred the call to Kansas City Bomb Squad. Deputies sent photos of the mortar to the Kansas City Bomb Squad who referred the call to EOD Specialists out of Ft. Riley Kansas.

Officials have cordoned off the area while awaiting the arrival of the Ft. Riley EOD Specialist. Assistance is also being provided by the National Guard Unit out of Camp Clark in Nevada.
