Obituary - Darren Lee Maynard

Daren Lee Maynard, age 49, of Nevada, MO passed away at his home Sunday, November 11, 2021, after a long illness. He was born February 5, 1972, in Kettering, England to Malcolm Douglas and Elizabeth Joyce (Price) Maynard.

Darren was a high school graduate, and married Carla Jean (Morris) Maynard on June 3, 2018, in Nevada, MO. He was a Christian and had worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and Domino’s Pizza. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, mini golf, playing darts and playing pool.

Darren leaves behind his wife Carla Maynard; a stepson, Cody Leeker, Nevada, MO; a stepdaughter, Courtney Leeker, Miramar, CA; his mother Elizabeth Joyce Maynard; twin sisters, Tracy Guy and Karen Maynard; a brother, John Maynard; a niece, Zoe Guy and a nephew Danny Guy. He was preceded in death by his father, Malcolm Maynard, an infant brother, Mark Maynard, and an infant sister, Sarah Maynard.

There will be a private family service.

Memorial services for Jimmy Smith, formerly of Adrian, Missouri will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. James “Jimmy” Edward Smith, age 65 formerly of Adrian, Missouri died Monday, November 22, 2021. He was born June 22, 1956 to John and Martha Gene Thomas Smith.

Jimmy is survived by one son, Tyler Smith and wife Kia of Farmersville, Texas; one daughter, Sara Smith of Archie, Missouri; two brothers, Kirk Smith and wife Debbie of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and Larry Smith of Adrian, Missouri; two sisters, Debbie and Shelly; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Lough, Joshua Lough, Jeffrey Lough, Jackson Lough and Kariel Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepdad Harry McDowell.

Obituary - Mabel Elizabeth Taylor

Mabel Elizabeth Taylor, 88, Harrisonville, MO, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2021 at the Faith Baptist Church in Harrisonville with visitation from 10:30-11:00. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Inurnment will be held in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO at a later date.

Obituary - Larry Curtice Bradley

Larry Curtice Bradley, 71, of Nevada, fortified by the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, died November 22 in St. Louis, MO from pneumonia, pancreatic cancer, and complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was born July 3, 1950, in Neosho, MO to Mary Ann Clark Bradley and Curtice Lee Bradley. 

He grew up in Pineville, MO. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin and a Master’s in Librarianship from Emporia State University. He came to Nevada in March 1974 to replace the retiring Dorothy Hill as director of the Nevada Public Library. He was working as an IT Supervisor for the State of Missouri until stricken by his final illness.

He was married February 8, 1975, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to Karen Lynn Taylor of Nevada. He was an active member of the community and had belonged to the Optimist Club, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, was a member and president of the Nevada Library Board of Directors, was a member and President of the Nevada Parks and Recreation Board and enjoyed playing bridge in several bridge clubs. He admired, respected, and loved the work of the Rotary Club and would have been a 48-year member in March 2022. He had served as President of the Nevada club and had been their longtime secretary. He also served as President of the Fort Scott Rotary Club during the years that he worked for Fort Scott Community College. He served numerous terms as Assistant District Governor for District 6110 and enjoyed visiting other clubs in the District and making Rotary friendships. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. However, what he loved most was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his widow, Karen; a son, Joseph Pohl and daughter-in-law, Abbie Ann of St. Louis; a daughter, Joanna Lynn and son-in-law, Phillip Aaron Wesley of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Ainsley Olivia and Andrew Ross Bradley; and Henry Joseph Bradley and Lena Alexandra Wesley; his brother, Clark Bradley of Joplin, a sister-in-law, Cheri Earnest, and her husband, Doug of Branson, sister-in-law Nancy Alt, and her husband, Dennis of Shawnee, KS as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and an uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nevada. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Nevada. The rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 30, 2021, and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home following the rosary. Due to COVID and because of having immunosuppressed family members, we kindly ask for all who attend to wear a mask.

Memorials are suggested to The Rotary Foundation, or to Washington University Parkinson Disease Research, or the DAR Education Advancement for Missouri Junior Members Fund, c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

City Hall will be closing at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 24 and will be closed November 25 and 26 for Thanksgiving.

The 2021 AIM’s Annual Lighted Christmas Parade will be 5:30 p.m. Saturday, November 27 at the Montrose Community Building. Arthur Christmas will be playing on the Big Screen at the Montrose Community Building starting at 5:30 p.m. Concessions will be available, hosted by the Montrose JH/HS Cheer Squad and are a free will donation. At 7:00 p.m., the Grand Lighting Ceremony will take place on Main Street. Immediately following the Lighting will be the Christmas Parade. The Montrose Knights of Columbus will hold their annual Germantown Turkey Shoot Sunday November 28, starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Germantown ball field. Tickets are $3.00 each and advance sale tickets will enter the purchaser into a drawing for 1 of 4 cash prizes. Two raffles will be held the day of the shoot for 2 shotguns. There will be a youth line shot every hour. Tickets are available in Appleton City at Dr. Payton’s office, Fennewald Plumbing or any Knights members.

The 25th Annual Christmas in the Country will be Saturday, December 4, 2021. Way to hunt young man!

SONIC CITATION: Conservation Agent Corporal Don Tiller checked on this young duck hunter waterfowl hunting with his parents at a farm pond in rural Bates County on Saturday.

The youth had just harvested the duck pictured. Agent Tiller issued the youth a “Sonic Citation” for a free ice cream cone from Sonic for his hunting efforts and ethics.

The young hunter’s mother provided the following comment, “Agent Don Tiller is doing his good duty. Our son earned a good conservation award tonight while duck hunting.”’
