Update: Elderly couple killed in Miami County Kansas accident involving a train

On November 25th around 6:08 p.m. the Miami County Kansas Sheriffs Office responded to a call from a Union Pacific Railroad employee of a train vs. vehicle injury crash at the railroad crossing of Ridgeview Road and Wagstaff Road in rural Miami County.

When Emergency personnel arrived on scene, they located a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix approximately 1/2 miles down the tracks from the intersection fully engulfed in flames.

A preliminary investigation has found that the vehicle attempted to drive around the railroad crossing arms and got stuck in the crossing on the tracks.

The train struck the vehicle and pushed it to its final resting location. Just prior to the train stopping, the vehicle caught fire trapping both occupants.

Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene of this accident and it appears all railroad equipment was working properly at the time of this incident.

The occupants are believed to be an elderly couple from Spring Hill, Kansas. The Identity of the occupants haven't been confirmed and will be completed through the Pathologist.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash with the assistance of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and their crime lab as well as Union Pacific Railroad Police, Miami County EMS, Louisburg Fire Department and the Johnson County Fire District #2 all assisted and the crash scene.
