Arrest made in 2017 shooting in Belton

On 3-30-2017, Belton officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of N Scott Ave on a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, they found Gabriel Brito-Ramirez had been shot and was deceased.

Belton detectives along with assistance from the Metro Squad worked many leads on the case but were unable to develop enough information to charge a suspect at the time. The Belton Police Department remains committed to working “cold cases” making every effort to bring justice to the victims and their families.

In late 2021, DNA results along with electronic evidence provided the necessary evidence in the case to charge Charles Branson of St. Clair Missouri with Second Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery, First Degree Assault, two counts of Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.

The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges on 12-18-2021 as Branson was in custody in a federal detention facility in Terre Haute, Indiana. Branson has been extradited back to Cass County where he was arraigned on the charges on 1-3-2022 and is currently being held without bond.
