Clinton Fire Department battle fire in detached garage

At 5:20pm today (January 14, 2022), Clinton Firefighters were dispatched to 520 West Rogers Street on a reported structure fire. While en route, responding crews were notified that the fire was in a detached garage in close proximity to the residence.

Deputy Chief Matt Willings was first to arrive on scene, finding a detached garage with heavy fire and smoke conditions present. A second alarm for additional personnel was requested by Chief Willings for a working structure fire.

The on duty crew arrived on scene, including Clinton Fire Chief Mark Manuel, and fire suppression efforts began. Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly with no damage to the adjacent residential home.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by CFD fire investigators. Due to the extent of damage to the structure and contents, an exact cause could not be determined.

Assisting agencies included the Clinton Police Department and Golden Valley Hospital Ambulance. In total, 13 firefighters responded to the incident. Fire crews were on scene for approximately 1.5 hours, no injuries were reported.

Obituary - Russ Warren

Huell Lovell Warren, known as Russ Warren to Nevada radio listeners, died in his home on January 11, 2022. Russ was born in Linthicum Heights, MD, a suburb of Baltimore, on June 11, 1948, the first son of Huell Earl Warren and Barbara Lovell Warren.

Both of his parents were wire editors for the Associated Press. Russ’s mom died when he was 7. His father remarried in 1959 to Margaret Jeanette Coons of Nevada, and the family moved to Kansas City, MO.

Russ graduated from Park Hill High School in 1966 and earned his undergraduate degree at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO. He began his radio career on the campus station. He was a radio announcer and reporter at station KDMO in Carthage, MO and at station KMDO in Fort Scott, KS before he began his long stint at KNEM/KNMO. Russ had a nose for news.

He made a regular circuit of city offices and gathering places to collect facts that substantiated his reports. Consistency, steadiness, and a high regard for the truth were his specialty. His voice and persona were familiar to many in Nevada; one listener dubbed Russ “the Paul Harvey of Vernon County”.

Russ was also a sports enthusiast and an expert play-by-play announcer. Russ was a very private person, but he made enduring relationships. His family is especially grateful for the care and concern that Mike Harbit, Carol Branham and John Flynn showed to Russ over many years.

Survivors include Russ’s brother, Christopher of Houston, TX; and his sister, Helen, of St. Paul, MN.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Mark Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested in his memory to the Nevada R-5 Booster Club c/o Ferry Funeral Home.
