Police pursuit overnight ends in Bates County

On 4/11/23 at approximately 1:05 Am Dispatch received a call from Vernon County Sheriff's Office of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I49 at the county line. Deputies intercepted the vehicle at the 129 mile mark and attempted to get the drivers attention while remaining in the northbound lane. 

The Deputies utilized their red and blue lights, sirens and spot lights to get the driver's attention. The driver continued to travel north in the southbound lanes and even increased his speeds to 120mph. The driver narrowly struck two vehicles head-on, turns his headlights off and came to a stop at the 135 mile marker.
 
At the 135 mile marker the Deputies attempted to take the subject into custody. The driver then made a U-turn and began driving southbound in the southbound lane. 

The Deputies gave chase again with lights and sirens. Speeds were in excess of 120 miles an hour while southbound. at the 129 mile marker the driver pulled over again and the deputies were able to extract the driver from the drivers seat.
 
The driver is currently on Missouri Probation and Parole for possession of controlled substances. Charges are pending from the Bates County Prosecutors Office.

Update: Suicidal subject locks down school and daycare this afternoon in Butler

On 4/11/23 at approximately 130pm Bates County Sheriff's Office was requested to assist the Butler Police Department in reference to a reportedly armed and a suicidal subject.

The subject was reportedly in the area on the train tracks south of Mill Street. The Subject had made prior threats to commit "suicide by cop" in the past. 

The officers on scene had lost the subject in the area behind the porta-pot storage and the railroad tracks. Deputies, Detectives and Command Staff responded to assist Butler Police Department.

The Butler Elementary School and a Daycare were placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. 

At approximately 1:55 pm law enforcement on scene found the subject hiding in the heavy brush in a creek behind a small outbuilding. The subject was taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after, both daycare and elementary schools were released from their lockdown.

Obituary - Steven Ray Smith

Steven Ray Smith, age 77, of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away on Monday. April 10, 2023, after a long battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather.

Steve was born on April 17, 1945, in Pittsburg, to Gene and Helen Moody Smith. He attended Pittsburg schools, and graduated with Pittsburg High School’s class of 1963. Following high school, he served his Country in the U.S. Army National Guard.

He married Karen Wilson of Fort Scott, Kansas, on April 30, 1980. After 43 years of devoted marriage, Karen survives of the home. Steve and Karen faithfully attended and supported the Pittsburg Church of the Nazarene.

Steve worked for Pittcraft Printing in Pittsburg, and at SeKan Printing in Fort Scott, along with Karen. Following their retirement, Steve and Karen enjoyed many happy years together.

Steve was an honest, honorable, and dependable community citizen, striving to lead by example as a positive role model for family and friends. While friendly to all, he had a quiet demeanor and a dry sense of humor, and was known for his funny stories. A compassionate animal lover, Steve had several special pet dogs in his lifetime - most recently a beloved, yet spoiled, beagle named Maggie, who passed away last year.

Steve was also an auto enthusiast. He took great pride in the meticulous maintenance and detailing of his ever-evolving fleet of cars and trucks, keeping them in pristine condition. A light rain shower that ruined a fresh wax job would send shivers down his spine. Some joked that Steve would nearly buff the paint off of his vehicles in his efforts to keep them looking showroom-perfect.

In addition to his wife, Karen, Steve is survived by a son Scott Smith (Gabriel Wiggins) of Albuquerque, NM, a daughter, Candice Bland (Kyle) of El Dorado Springs, MO, and grandchildren Jacob and Jeremey Smith and Camille Bland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Helen Smith and his grandparents, Gene and Helen Moody.

Steve and his family have been thankful for the doctors, caregivers, church, and community members who have provided comfort and support through medical treatments, therapy, and prayers over the past several years.

A service to honor Steve Smith’s memory will be held Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 10:00 AM at PittNaz Church, 816 E. Quincy Street in Pittsburg. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg. Memorials are suggested to the SEK Humane Society and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S Main St., Fort Scott, KS 66701. Accident involving dump truck in Belton

Today, the Belton Fire Department responded to a accident caused by a raised dump truck bed into a power line. This incident caused a small grass fire in the area of Walnut and Colbern. No one was hurt in this incident. It did cause a slight disruption in power in the area.

Obituary - Arlene Kisner

Arlene Kisner 94, of Butler, Missouri passed away Monday, April 10, 2023 at Medicalodge of Butler. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, April 14, 2023 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009). There will be no visitation. Burial will follow services in Double Branch Cemetery.

Arrests and Reports

St. Clair Sheriff Lee Hilty reported deputies made arrests and took multiple reports during the week of April 4, 2023 through April 10, 2023.

On April 4, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop northbound Highway 13. Vehicle continued traveling northbound, failing to yield. The use of spike strips was successful, however the vehicle continued. Henry County assisted with the pursuit. Another set of strips were deployed, bringing the vehicle to a stop. St. Clair County Deputies arrested Christian Gaines on Johnson County warrant for Domestic Battery. St. Clair County Deputies issued citations for Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle with Activated Lights and Sirens, Failure to Register Motor Vehicle, Failure to Provide Insurance, Operating a Vehicle without a Valid License, and Resisting Arrest. Christian was transported to St. Clair County jail and released to the jail staff.

On April 4, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Sharolyn Harper on Livingston County warrant on charges of Failure to Appear. HIs bond is $500.00 cash only.

On April 4, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies received a call regarding drug use at the Civic Center in Lowry Center. Subjects were juveniles using a vape pen, Deputies confiscated the pen and advised the juvenile he was not to drive under the influence.

On April 4, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies received a call on NE Highway C regarding a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. Deputies arrested Bobby Rhodes on these charges: Assault 1st degree or attempt - Serious Physical Injury or Special, Leaving Scene of Accident - Physical Injury, Driving While Revoked/Suspended, Armed Criminal Action, and DWI - Serious Physical Injury. Bobby was transported to St. Clair County Jail.

On April 4, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were notified of a walk-in at the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office regarding a subject wanting to turn himself in. Michael Brown was arrested for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Bond is set at $10,000 cash or surety.

On April 5, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested James Saunders at Jackson County Jail on a St. Clair County warrant on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bond is set at $10,000 cash surety.

On April 5, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Amanda Crawford at Bullseye Gas Station in Lowry City on a Clinton PD, Henry County warrant for Failure to Appear- Fail to Maintain Financial Responsibility. Bond set at $325 cash surety.

On April 6, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies received a call for service for a walk-in at the Sheriff's Office. Individual stated that the suspect violated an order of protection.

On April 6, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies received a call to check well-being at the Wildflower Inn in Osceola. Deputies found Tonya Johnson and Travis Tue in possession of a controlled substance. Both were arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

On April 6, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies stopped to check on a vehicle that was stopped on E 82 highway ramp. Steven Cook was arrested and brought to the St. Clair County jail. Steven is being charged with Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia- Amphetamine or Methamphetamine.

On April 6, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies found a wallet at the Amish Trading Post in Osceola. Owner has been located with the assistance of Greene County.

On April 7, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Terry Johnson at the Jackson County jail on St. Clair County warrant on Probation Violation for Possession of Controlled Substance. Bond set at $25,000 cash or surety.

On April 8, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to an abandoned vehicle on WW highway and V highway. Vehicle was identified as a camo-green Ford Ranger parked partially in the roadway. Vehicle was towed.

On April 8, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Delbert Uren on N 13 Highway and NE 1000 Rd in Lowry City on Clinton PD/Henry County warrant for Failure to Appear on Fail to Maintain Financial Responsibility. Bond set at $325 cash surety.

On April 9, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance on West 1st Street in Appleton City. Nicole WIlson was arrested and charged with Domestic Assault- 3rd Degree.

On April 9, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to NE 1399 Private Road in reference to a suspicious person. Vernon Wait was arrested for possession of a firearm. Vernon is being charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm- Dangerous Felon and Possession of Controlled Substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana/synthetic cannabinoid.

On April 9, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance on East 5th Street in Lowry City. Lucas Emerick was placed on a 12-hour detox for his protection.

On April 10, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to a person check at the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office. Subject wanted to check for outstanding warrants and see about finding a warm place to sleep. The Ministry Alliance was available to help.

On April 10, 2023- Missouri State Highway Patrol and St. Clair County Deputies arrested Cameron Quinlin on SW 900 Road on his St. Clair County warrant for two charges of Statutory Rape- 2nd Degree. He is being held at the St. Clair County jail on NO BOND warrant.

Man arrested in St. Clair County on two warrants

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and St. Clair County Deputies arrested Cameron Quinlin on SW 900 Road on his St. Clair County warrant for two charges of Statutory Rape- 2nd Degree. 

Mr. Quinlin was booked into the St. Clair County Jail in Osceola, Missouri and he is currently being held on no bond.
