Obituary - Sharon Kay (Ross) Ala

Sharon Kay Ala, age 79, of LaCygne, Kansas passed away at her home on May 1, 2023, surrounded by family. 

Sharon was born the daughter of Verne “Shorty” Ray and Ruth Bernice (Gilmore) Ross on May 1, 1944 at Blue Mound, Kansas. 

She married Leon “Butch” Snow on April 18, 1964, to this union two daughters were born, Angela Johnson (Tom) and Tina Stillians (Toby). Butch and Sharon were married for thirty years when he preceded her in death in 1994. Sharon then married Gary Ala on June 23, 2001 in Fort Scott, Kansas.

She worked at Stainbrook’s Store in LaCygne for thirty-two years. Sharon enjoyed gardening, cooking, helping with the 4-H when her girls were involved, spoiling her grandchildren, spending time with her family and she also had an extensive collection of owls. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Sharon is survived by her daughters, three brothers, Gary, Jerry and Vernon Ross, two stepsons, Stephen Patterson and Terry Ala, three stepdaughters, Cindy Kruh, Toni Miller and Julie Hatfield, three grandchildren, Jake, Tyler and Taylor, one great granddaughter, Sophee, 10 additional step grandchildren and 8 additional step great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm, Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel.

Burial will be at the New Lancaster Cemetery. Memorials may be made to New Lancaster United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home to: Schneider Funeral Home P.O. Box 304 La Cygne, Kansas 66040. Online condolences may be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com

One seriously injured in St. Clair County accident

On Wednesday May 3rd around 10:30 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in St. Clair County along with St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident on US Highway 54 about 2 miles east of Collins, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred the southbound 2015 Volvo 670 driven by 56 year old Suvad Dubinovic of St. Louis, Missouri failed to yield to a westbound 2004 Pontiac Montana driven by 55 year old Billy C. Gambriel of Pleasant Hope, Missouri, causing the Pontiac to strike the trailer unit of Volvo truck.

Billy C. Gambriel sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported by Life Flight to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri for treatment.

Forecast rainfall amounts Thursday and Friday

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible for Thursday morning into the afternoon. 

Rain and a few storms will become more widespread Thursday night into Friday. Then it looks much warmer this weekend with high temperatures well above normal for this time of year.

Stolen Nevada truck & equipment recovered in Jasper County

In the early morning hours of May 2nd 2023, Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s office attempted to stop a Ford F-650 truck pulling a trailer with numerous pieces of excavating equipment on it. 

The vehicle turned on a county road abruptly and the driver fled from the vehicle while it was still moving.

The driver, identified as Douglas Garver, 44, of Oronogo, was apprehended after a short foot chase. The truck and trailer and all of the equipment was determined to have just been stolen from Nevada, Missouri hours earlier.

Felony charges of tampering, stealing and resisting arrest have been sent to the Jasper County prosecutor.

Updated charges on Belton man

The Belton Missouri Police Department would like to update the public regarding the ongoing investigation in this case against Jason L. Carey.

On 9-19-2022, a Belton Police School Resource Officer received information from a student regarding inappropriate social media messages and videos received by the student from a substitute teacher.

This officer, along with members of the Belton Police Investigations Division and with the cooperation from our partners in the Belton School District began an investigation which uncovered additional victims. In the early morning hours of 9-21-2022, the suspect was detained by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office as a person of interest in this case. The suspect was extradited back to the Belton Jail at that time.

Cleaning it up!

Cass County Girl Scout Troop 3021 headed over to the Brown House on Sunday to clean out the flower beds and plant fresh flowers.
