Barn destroyed in early morning fire

On Saturday June 10th around 2:20 a.m. the El Dorado Springs Fire Department along with the Stockton Fire Department and Caplinger Mills Fire Department responded to a large barn fire at a address of 1900 block of South 801 Road.

Fire crews were on scene for four hours putting the blaze out; no injuries were reported. The cause of this fire is under investigation at this time. 





Obituary - Carol Lou Mullen

Carol Lou Mullen, 81, of Peculiar, MO, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at her home with her family by her side. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Interment will follow in Wills Cemetery in Peculiar, MO.

Carol was born July 20, 1941 to Leslie Calvin and Mamie Ethel (Batson) Curnutt in Independence, MO. She grew up in Raytown, MO, graduating from Raytown High School with the Class of 1959. After high school, she earned her Associates of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Southwest Baptist University in 1961. She began working at Bendix on July 3, 1961, and this is where she met the love of her life, Glenn Mullen. They had their first date on Memorial Day weekend at the Branson Picture Show, and eventually married on September 21, 1963 at her parent's home in Raytown. They began building their new house in Peculiar, MO and moved in December 15, 1964. They picked Peculiar because it was halfway between Adrian, MO, where Glenn was from and Raytown, MO, where she was from.

During her life, Carol participated in and contributed to many things. She served as the Cass County Extension Homemakers President from 1980 -1982, Mo Extension Homemaker Associations NW District Director from 1980 - 1982, Cass County Extension Board Secretary, a member of the Get Together Homemakers Club from 1972 until her passing, and a member of First Baptist Church of Peculiar. Within First Baptist Church, she served as the secretary for 10 years, a Girls in Action Director, a Sunday School teacher to the 3rd and 4th graders, and church custodians with Glenn.

She worked as a grade school nurse's assistant at Peculiar Elementary and served as a home room mother for both children throughout their elementary days, but her greatest career was being a mom and a wife. In her free time, she enjoyed taking tule painting lessons and flower arranging classes. She enjoyed taking day trips with Glenn and their friends, including a trip to Europe in 1997 and an Alaskan Cruise with family in 2013. She loved watching dirt track car races with Glenn. In the off season, on Saturday nights, she could be found enjoying the country music at Big Creek Music Show in Pleasant Hill, MO.

Carol was truly a person who gave of her time to all her endeavors, but her true favorite past time was being with her family, first her children, then grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

Carol is preceded in death by husband, Glenn Mullen; her parents; brother, L. Melvin Curnutt; sister, Faye Lavery; and nephew, Jim Lavery. She is survived by her son, Kevin (Sheri) Mullen; her daughter, Patty (Troy) Beard; her nephew, John Mullen; her grandchildren: Heather (David) Orleman, Dustin (Crystal) Sanders, Jason (Diana) Beard, and Ashley (Blake) Hiza; her great-grandchildren: Caroline (fiance', Devin Bogaars) Neitch, Carter Orleman, Hunter Sanders, Preston Sanders, and Baby Boy Hiza expected in July 2023.

El Dorado Springs woman injured after striking deer in the roadway

On Saturday June 10th around 9:30 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cedar County along with Cedar County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Highway 39 around 2 miles west of Caplinger Mills.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the westbound 2018 Toyota Yaris driven by 30 year old Katherine Peroni-Searles of El Dorado Springs struck a deer, traveled off the right side of the roadway, crossed back over the roadway, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree.

Peroni-Searles was taken by ambulance to CMH Bolivar with minor injuries.

Celebration of Life for Mary Culpepper

A Celebration Of Life for Mary Culpepper will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 17th at the Amsterdam Community Center.

The family does realize this is Father’s Day weekend and many people probably have plans that day but if you’re able to stop by and enjoy some food & company, everyone is welcome.

Mary was born on April 7, 1960 in Beaver, Oklahoma, the daughter of Joseph M. Harrelson and Ernestine Shaw.

She was known by many as the “Blue Streak” seen flying through Butler Walmart, where she retired from in 2022. Mary never knew a stranger, and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone at anytime, no matter how busy she was.

Mary was preceded in death by her ten siblings. Survivors include her mother Ernestine Shaw, sister Billie Staub (Richie) of Brownwood, Texas, husband John R. Culpepper of the home, daughters Cassie Miller (Michael) of Pleasanton, Kansas, Julie Schmidt (Michael) of Amoret, Missouri, sons John D. Culpepper (Misty) of Pleasanton, Kansas, James W. Culpepper (Dona) of Hume, Missouri, sixteen grandchildren, and two great-grand children.

Butler Community Café celebrating 8 year anniversary

The Butler Community Café will be celebrating its 8th birthday/anniversary on June 13th at the Ohio Methodist Church! 

We are looking forward to celebrating with our wonderful community, our sponsor for the meal, and our wonderful volunteers who help serve and clean up. 

Serving time starts at 5:30 and looking forward to some cake and ice cream for dessert!

Amsterdam man arrested in Bates County

On Sunday morning June 11th around 1:10 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 67 year old Charles D. Short of Amsterdam, Missouri.

Mr. Short was arrested on the following charges 1.) Felony possession of a controlled substance - Methamphetamine 2.) Drug paraphernalia 3.) Failure to maintain right half of the roadway.

Charles D. Short was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he was later citied with tickets and released.

Obituary - John George Vella

John George Vella, age 74, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

John was born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 24, 1949 to Rosario Vella and Julie (Castrop) Vella. John graduated high school in 1967 and a few years later was married to his loving wife, Nora E. (Edelstein). 

Their union was blessed with two children, Nick and Melinda. In life, John enjoyed spending time with his family and especially grandchildren, attending their activities. He loved being outside on the patio getting sun while listening to the KC Royals and barbecuing. 

He also enjoyed working in the yard, and taking daily walks. He was an avid reader, and lover of music, in particular the Allman Brothers Band. 

John might be best known for his dry sense of humor, and telling a good story, which will continue to be told by all those that knew and loved him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Rosario and Julie Vella.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Vella; son, Nick Vella (Ashley); daughter, Melinda Scott (Jason); sister, Joann Griffin (Kelly); and three grandchildren, Darby Kruse (Cole), Olivia Vella, and Adrianna Vella.

A celebration of life will be held on August 13th 2023, from 1-3pm at the Centerview event space in Raymore MO.
