Verna Lynn Solomon (Henry), 67, of Drexel, Missouri, passed away August 14th, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri.
She was born on April 18th, 1956, to Vernon W.C. and Dorothy Louise Henry in Kansas City, Missouri and was the oldest of four children. Verna was a daddy’s girl and was proud to be his namesake. She took her job as big sister seriously. From babysitting, cheering them on, and always being a constant in their lives.
Verna was a graduate of Pleasant Hill High School in 1974. She loved the English language and often wrote poems and limericks. Although she was shy in school, she had many friends and loved to spend time with them.
She married Art Solomon on September 29th, 1979. They were blessed with two daughters, Amber Lynne and Ashley Jean, and created a loving, tight-knit family. Art and Verna spent a wonderful 44 years together.
Her whole life Verna was full of personality, spunk, and creativity, which helped make her an excellent homemaker, wife, sister, daughter and above all, a mother. She was always her daughters’ biggest cheerleader.
She loved her family with her whole heart and never went long without letting them know how precious they were to her. She was fiercely loyal and protective. She was beyond selfless, always putting those she loved first.
Verna was an avid animal lover who had many pets throughout her life. She was known for spoiling her dogs and treated them as if they were a part of the family. It was a dream of hers to one day own a rescue for dogs.
In later years, she held the title of “Mimi” in highest regard.
Mimi’s favorite pastimes included spoiling her grandbabies, listening to music (often loudly, so she could feel it in her bones), reading, and traveling.
Verna is survived by her husband Art of Drexel, Missouri; Daughters, Amber Solomon (Gary) of Archie, Missouri and Ashley Barney (Matt) of Gardner, Kansas; three grandchildren, Corbin Barney, Riley Barney, Kaylin Hall; siblings Guy Henry of Lee Summit, Missouri and MaryBeth Jennings of Butler, Missouri.
Private Family Memorial Service will be held.

Obituary - Carol Sue Smith
Carol Sue Smith, age 72, of Nevada, MO passed away on Monday, August 18 at the Butler Center in Butler, MO. She was born August 6, 1951 in Lamar, MO to James F. and Delera I. (Howard) Vinson.
Carol was raised in Golden City, MO and graduated from High School there in 1970. She worked at Job Corps in Excelsior Springs until their closing and then she came back to Lamar and worked as a café waitress for a time.
In 1972, she moved to Nevada and began working at the Nevada State Hospital, retiring after 30 years. Carol was a member of the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Nevada.
Survivors include two brothers, Donald Vinson, Lamar, and James Vinson, Lamar; one sister, Wanda Hunt, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Patricia Schmoranz and Marsha Burris.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Dennis Engelbrecht officiating. Interment will follow in First Christian Church IOOF Cemetery in Golden City. The family will receive friends from 5-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Ferry Funeral Home.

Norman Earl Black, age 73 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born February 9, 1950 to Roland Valoris and Norma Jean Silvernail Black in Hudson, Michigan.
Norman, one of three children, grew up in Hudson, Michigan where he attended grade school and part of high school. He graduated high school from God’s Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1968. Norman furthered his education and got a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Theology. He was a licensed practical nurse, pastor, Christian school principal and administrator, husband, father and foster parent. His most recent work was a pastor at the Appleton City Church of God (Holiness) until his retirement in 2019. Norman and Barbara moved to Butler, Missouri in 2019 and became members of the Happy Hill Church of God. On July 7, 1971 he married Barbara Louise Manners and to this union, one daughter was born.
Norman was known to be humorous, considerate and influential in the lives of many young people. He loved to study the Bible and was an avid reader. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. After retirement, one of Nornan’s greatest joys was to volunteer at Bates County Memorial Hospital and was the “Volunteer of the Year” in 2023.
Norman is survived by his wife, Barbara Black of Butler, Missouri; a daughter, Regina Marie Black of Utah; a grandson, John Michael Black; a great-granddaughter, Kennidie; and a brother, John Richard Black and wife Barbara of Ft. Meyers, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edna Rose Rahmer.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected to last through much of next week. Temperatures will be in the low 100s through Thursday with heat index values near or exceeding 110° each day. The Hottest days will be Sunday and Monday when heat index values will range from 110° to 120°.
