Bears fall to Summit Christian last night in Clinton Tournament

The Butler Varsity Boys Basketball team lost last night to the Summit Christian Academy Eagles in the Clinton Tournament. 

The final score of the game 59-44. The bears was led in scoring by Senior Carter Trumbore who had 31 points. Sophomore Jake Chandler pitched in 8 points and was very solid on defense. 

Butler will be back at it today at 4pm as they take on the Clinton Cardinals. If you can't make the trip to watch please check the game out on Prepcast.

Obituary - Dawn Rosanne Hurt

Dawn Rosanne Hurt, age 65, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away January 23, 2024, at St. Joseph Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Raymore Presbyterian Church, 204 S. Jefferson St. Raymore, Missouri 64083. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m.

Dawn was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa on February 8, 1958, the daughter of Robert H. McBride and June H. Kuhnberg. Dawn grew up in a large family of nine children. After graduating high school, Dawn continued her education at Hawkeye Technical Institute carrying a degree as a lab technician. She later expanded her skills to include x-ray tech. Dawn was employed at the Kansas City Family Medical Center for the last 26 years. Dawn met the love of her life William “Bill” C. Hurt and together they were married on March 17th, 1992. They were blessed with one son Patrick C. Hurt.

In life Dawn was a member of the Raymore Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to travel on weekend trips, reading, watching the Chiefs and her grandkids. Dawn was a devoted mother, wife, and a professional woman.

Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and June McBride.

She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, William “Bill” C. Hurt; son, Patrick C. Hurt; two grandchildren, Deyton Jones and Lily Kizer; six siblings, Colleen Brant (Duffy), Brian McBride (Kathy), Jim McBride (Sandy), Lauri Mlechick (Robert), Robin Green (Ray), and Leah McBride.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter of Grandview, Missouri.

Dawn was greatly respected and admired by co-workers, loved by her family and many friends. Love you forever Red!

Obituary - Johny Lee Vaughn

Johny Lee Vaughn, age 78, Leawood, Kansas formerly of Mound City, Kansas passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024. He was born in Mound City, Kansas on May 14, 1945 the son of Marion and Edna Paddock Vaughn. He graduated from Mound City High School in the Class of 1963. He then attended Fort Scott Community College. He went on to finish bachelor’s degree at Pittsburg State University. He also graduated from Elim Bible Institute in the Spring of 1992. John was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Linda Krull on December 22, 1967. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home John joined his Father-in-law Charles Cap Krull as the first agents for AFLAC in the state of Kansas.

John went on to be a great producer and manager with AFLAC and later worked as an independent agent and enjoyed success in this capacity as well. John was a Christian Man living life by the Golden Rule. His family was second only to his faith in the Lord Jesus. He served on the Board at Shalom and was a member of the American Legion Hewitt New Post #248 in Mound City. He was preceded in death by his parents.

John is survived by his wife, Linda, a son Travis Vaughn and wife Marisa, two daughters, Misty Wilson and husband Jeff, and Meaghan Benz. Three sisters, Jeanette Kellstadt, Joan Shroyer, and Judy Poole and husband Don. Seven grandchildren, Kylie & Jeremy, Bailey & Dakota, Ryleigh & Joey, Aubrey, Savannah, Benjamin, and Ayden. Five great grandchildren, Jala, Ariah, Daxton, Hadley, Brynlee and one coming in June.

Memorial service will be held 11 am Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Mound City First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Friday, February 2 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Update: Stockton man charged with girlfriends murder

On January 16th, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office received information related to a possible homicide identifying that Bradley Keith of Stockton, Missouri had allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend. Keith was later located on property near Stockton, where law enforcement observed a large burn pile on the property.

The investigation by the Cedar County Sheriff's Office resulted in the recovery last week of human remains from the brush and wood fire, identified this week as 27 year old Shaniya S. Haynes.

Upon questioning, Keith allegedly stated he had accidentally caused the death of the victim with the accidental discharge of a firearm during a struggle for that firearm. According to documents, Keith led investigators to the site of the shooting and showed where he had disposed of the pistol in rural Vernon County.

Bradley Keith faces charges in Vernon County of second degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a firearm, as well as charges of abandonment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in felony prosecution in Cedar County. He remains in custody without bond.

Obituary - Nancy Irene Fetty

Nancy Irene Fetty, 59, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, in Lamar, MO, following a lengthy illness. Nancy was born August 4, 1964, in Kansas City, MO to Otto E. and Betty L. (Jackson) Thornburg, Jr. She was married to Todd Fetty on May 5, 1995.

Nancy was raised in Nevada and Rich Hill, graduating from Rich Hill High School in 1983. She worked at Heartland Hospital, Cash and Dash in Nevada, and after many years of working in healthcare as a CNA, Nancey retired from Medicalodges of Nevada. She enjoyed shopping, being with her family, and family gatherings.

Survivors include her four children: Steven Anderson (Beverly), Lamar, MO, Stephanie Anderson, Winoka, OK, Johnathan Fetty, Nevada, MO, Angela Fetty, Nevada, MO; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Timothy Thornburg (Ellen), Rich Hill, MO, and Lester Thornburg, Evanston, WI; a sister, June Burris, Kansas City, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a nephew, Marcus Cheek.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2024, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will follow in Carbon Center Cemetery in Rich Hill, MO. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Fatal house fire in Cass County

On Friday, January 26 at approximately 4:45 a.m. first responders were called to the scene of a house fire near E. 296th St. and S. Hess Rd.

Multiple agencies, including the Cass County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene and located two people.

One of them, an adult female, was taken to the hospital — where she was later pronounced deceased.

The adult male victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. He is expected to recover.

The Cass County Fire Investigation Team is currently working with the Missouri State Fire Marshal and other agencies to determine what caused the fire.

Assisting agencies include the Central Cass and West Peculiar Fire Protection Districts — along with the Adrian, Harrisonville, Dolan West Dolan and Garden City Fire Departments.



Obituary - Martha Lois Herbst

Martha Lois (Hawkins) Herbst, age 84, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, after a short illness.

Lois was born November 29, 1939, to Iva Nelson (Galvin) and William B. Hawkins, the third of seven children. Her schooling was obtained in numerous one room schools before attending El Dorado Springs High School, graduating third in the class of 1957.

Lois was united in marriage on September 19, 1959, to James Franklin Herbst of El Dorado Springs, MO. During their life together, Lois and Jim raised three children. Lois worked at Sac Osage Electric Cooperative, Community Lumber Company, Citizens Bank and retired in January 2001 after 27 years from Osage Valley Electric Cooperative in Butler, MO.

Lois volunteered at The Hope Center Food Bank, Treasure Hunt, El Dorado Springs Senior Center, Cedar County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Community Springs Healthcare Facility. She was a member of the El Dorado Springs Red Hat Club and the First Christian Church Women’s group. She loved traveling to all 50 states, walking, going to Silver Sneakers, watching her hummingbirds, doing crossword puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune.

Preceding Lois in death were her parents, William B. and Iva Hawkins, and one brother, Oral Milburn Hawkins.

Survivors include her husband Jim; five siblings and one sister-in-law: Jane (Bob) Hutchison of Walker, MO, Mary Nell (Dean) Lombardi of Las Vegas, NV, Marge Hunter of Merriam, KS, Clifton (Lynette) Hawkins of Central Point, OR, Larry Hawkins of Las Vegas, NV, and Sally Hawkins of Wilkes Barre, PA; three children: Andy (Dara) Herbst of O’Fallon, MO, Ann (Gary) Pennell of Dyersburg, TN, and Alice (Robert) Claypool of Pella, IA; four grandchildren: Jennen Herbst of Columbia, MO, Carson Claypool of Newton, IA, Taryn Herbst of Charlotte, NC, and Connor Claypool of Des Moines, IA. She leaves behind many family members, nieces, and nephews, as well as numerous friends.
