Thank you for 50 years of service

Beverly Johnson was recognized for her 50 Years of Service to Ellett Memorial Hospital during Hospital Week in May. Well, 50 years is too monumental not to celebrate again! Congratulations Bev!


Obituary - Janice Charles

Janice Diane (Hansen) Charles, 73, El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. Janice was born April 16, 1951 in Kansas City, MO, to Andrew Burt & Marjorie Love (Willard) Hansen. She was united in marriage to Gary Bruce Charles on December 5, 1969, in Kansas City, MO. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2022.

Janice was a homemaker and helped her husband, Bruce, with his drywall business. She especially enjoyed sewing, collecting rocks and crystals, and canning.

Janice is survived by her four children, Jerri Beth Donahue (Darrin), and their children, Hannah and Jesse of Pleasant Hill, MO, Gina Henson (Jon), and their children, Court and Jordan of Kansas City, MO, Rebekah Reasoner (David), and their children, Tyler and Mia of El Dorado Springs, MO, Andrew Bruce Charles (Lacey), and their daughter, Lily of El Dorado Springs, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nevada, MO., with Pastor Mike Carner and Pastor Dennis Mix officiating. Memorials may be made to American Red Cross with Ferry Funeral Home serving as custodian.

Cash Johnston heading to Junior High National Rodeo Finals

Cash Johnston is headed to Junior High National Rodeo Finals in Des Moines Iowa next week. 

Cash will compete in Chute Dogging representing Missouri on a National Rodeo level. Cash was present with a sponsorship from the Butler Saddle Club during Friday Night Rodeo performance. 

The rodeo will have a performance Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Go out and support them and let’s let Cash know how proud we are that our local boy is going to Nationals.

Cash is the son of Pam and Luke Johnston and he attended JR High at Miami School.



Bates County Cattlemen Cookout Tomorrow

The Bates County Cattlemen Cookout in the Family Center parking lot on Ft. Scott Street in Butler, Saturday, June 22nd. They will start cooking at 11am until the food is all gone. 

Come out and enjoy Ribeye steak sandwiches, smoked beef sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs, all meals come with chips and water.

Nevada man arrested after traffic stop in Bates County

On Thursday June 20th around 8:59 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 42 year old Lannce A. Whaley of Nevada, Missouri.

Mr. Whaley was arrested for 1.) Felony Possession of a controlled substance 2.) No Seatbelt 3.) Possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he was placed on a 24 hour investigative hold.

Obituary - Richard L. Nelson

Richard L. Nelson passed away in his home at the age of 84, in Hume, Missouri, after a long illness on June 13, 2024.

Richard was the son of the late Herbert Nelson Sr. and Betty Ruth “Pate” Nelson, he was born on December 21, 1939, in Underwood, Iowa. Richard entered the US Navy at the age of 17 in San Diego, California. Richard married Darlene Ester Bice on December 23, 1963. To this union four children were born. Delesa, Deborah (Debbie), Randy, and Darla.

He married Betty Jo Scrogham on July 12, 2002. Richard loved fishing, hunting, and camping with family and friends. He loved his children and grandchildren and family. Richard was saved as a young man. He with Darlene and the children attended church at Calhoun Christian Church in Calhoun, Missouri.

Richard is survived by his children, Delesa (Jack) Hicks, of Calhoun, Missouri, Randy (Shana) Nelson, of Hume, Missouri, and Darla Nelson Smith, of Hume, Missouri; grandchildren, Allison Nelson, of Hume, Missouri, Andy (Shelby) Hicks, of Clinton, Missouri, Samantha Nelson, of Hume, Missouri, great granddaughter, Haisley of Clinton, Missouri; brother, Duane (Jan) Nelson, of Hermitage, Missouri, sister, Cathy (Kenny) of Bulverde, Texas, sisters-in-law, Marie of Osceola, Missouri, Barbra of Higbee, Missouri, and Helen of Council Bluff, Iowa; a host of other nieces and nephews and other family members as well as friends.

He was preceded by his parents, Herbert Sr, and Betty Ruth “Pate” Nelson; his wives, Darlene Ester “Bice” Nelson and Betty Jo “Scrogham” Nelson; daughter, Debbie Nelson; son-in-law Darrell; granddaughters, Stefanie and Mia; grandson, Addison; brothers, Herbert Jr., Donnie and Bobby, brother-in-law, Mel. Richard was loved and will be missed.
