Two fatal drownings took place in the area last week

Two fatal drownings took place in the area last week according to Missouri Highway Patrol. The first was in Benton county on wednesday, June 26th, at 7:29 pm. Skyler Lewis,31, of Gravois Mills. Lewis waded in to Truman Lake to retrieve a snagged net and drowned. 

The second incident occurred on n Friday, June 28th in . Missouri Highway Patrol along with the Henry County Sheriff’s and First responders were called to the Calhoun area after an accident occured when Brent L Carroll, 20, of Warrensburg, had a rollover accident involving the lawnmower that he was operating. 

Carroll, who was mowing an embankment of a pond on the property when the mower lost traction and rolled over with Carroll. The mower came to rest in the pond on top of the worker. He was pinned under the equipment. First responders arrived and freed him and started CPR but Mr Carroll was not responsive.

Saturday morning rollover crash claims the life of Clinton man

On Saturday June 29th around 11:20 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Henry County along with Henry County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover on Route U just north of CR SE 580 in rural Henry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the northbound 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 67 year old Steven F. Albin of Clinton, Missouri ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch and a culvert before overturning and coming to rest on its top.

Mr. Albin was pronounced dead at the scene of this accident and his body was transported to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton.

This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 44th fatality of the year 2024. Next of kin notified.

Obituary - Jeffery Lynn Harness

Jeffery Lynn Harness age 64 of Harrisonville, Missouri departed this life Friday, June 28, 2024 at Golden Years Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Harrisonville, Missouri.

A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held at a later a date and visitation details will be added once that information becomes available.

Cass County pursuit ends in Kansas City

This morning around 12:20 a.m., a deputy attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on I-49 just south of 155th St. in Belton for a traffic violation.

As the vehicle headed northbound on I-49, the deputy activated his emergency lights.

The driver was slow to respond but stopped. Once the deputy walked toward the vehicle, the driver took off at a high rate of speed.
The deputy immediately got back to his own vehicle and began pursuing the suspect.

As the pursuit ensued, the suspect drove northbound erratically.
The driver ended up fleeing his vehicle after coming to a stop near the playground area at Iser Park in Kansas City.

As the suspect fled on foot, the deputy noticed a firearm in his hand.

Several agencies, including the Grandview, MO Police Department, Kansas City Missouri Police Department, Raytown Police Department and ATF assisted — including K9 and aerial support.
But they were unable to locate the suspect. KCPD is investigating this incident.

Happening Now: Playground fire at the Ohio Street Methodist Church

The Butler Fire Department along with Butler Police Department is on scene of a playground fire behind the Ohio Street Methodist Church at this time.

The cause of this fire is under investigation and the playground was fully engulfed in flames when fire arrived.

Obituary - Joyce Lea Brown

Joyce Lea Brown, 76 of Appleton City, Missouri, formerly of Kansas City, Missouri, and Pleasant Hill, Missouri, died June 26,2024 at Appleton City Manor in Appleton City, Missouri. 

She was born October 4, 1947, in Butler Missouri, the daughter of Leo Cary Talley and Aileen Hazel (Falk) Talley. She attended elementary school in Rockville, Missouri, and graduated from Appleton City High School, in the Class of 1966. 

After high school, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. (now AT&T) as a telephone operator. She married Richard D. Brown on May 16, 1979, in Appleton City, Missouri. Joyce and Richard continued to live in Kansas City, Missouri until they moved to Pleasant Hill, Missouri in 1995. She retired in May of 1998 after 32 years with the telephone company. Joyce moved back to Appleton City Missouri in 2012.

Joyce was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

Joyce was a talented artist. Her artistic interests and abilities included: ceramics, silver jewelry making, doll making, and doing freehanded drawing and painting portraits, scenes, and objects. She was particularly good at taking an ordinary object like a Mason jar, and transforming it into a wonderful work of art, with just a few strokes of a brush.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Aileen Talley, half- brother, Otis Talley, her husband, Richard, and life-long best friend, Kathy Miller.

Joyce is survived by her Godson, Tim Miller, of Appleton City, Missouri. Memorial donations are suggested to the First Christian Church in Appleton City.

A graveside service will be held on Monday June 1st at 10:00 a.m. at the Appleton City Cemetery.

Between 6:45pm and 7pm on 6/28/24 a white or silver SUV illegally dumped a tote containing 9 puppies in the city park.

The puppies appear to be Jack or Rat terrier mixes in generally good health and between 2 to 3 months old.

Obituary - Karen Sue Chapman

Karen Sue Chapman, age 61, of Prescott, Kansas passed away on June 26, 2024. Karen was born the daughter of Edwin J. and Bernadine Estelle Pratt Chapman on June 1, 1963 at Pontiac, Michigan.

She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development and worked many years with the Upstart program. 

Karen enjoyed gardening, chickens, sewing, crocheting, and going to craft shows. She also loved her dogs, studying and reading the Bible, baking, RV camping and going on motorcycle rides.

But most of all she loved being a mom and grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents. Karen is survived by her longtime companion, Hans Newsom, a daughter,, Krista Roberts (Morgan), two sons, Levi Allen and fiance, Trentity, Gage Allen and fiance, Emma, a sister, Cindy Collison, two brothers, Ed Chapman and Curtis Chapman and five grandchildren, Olivia, Zayden, Zoey, Creed and Christian.

Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Visitation will be July 6th from 1:00pm to service time.
