From the Belton Police Department



This morning for safety precautions, one of the schools in our district was on a temporary lockdown however it has already been lifted. There are no threats to the students or schools.



From the Archie R-5 School District

Archie R-V is aware of our district being one of many statewide schools named in a social media post referencing school violence.

Law enforcement has advised us that there is no credible threat at this time. 

Safety is our top priority and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement through this issue.

Mainly dry this weekend

Isolated to scattered showers are possible today, mainly east of Kansas City and into central to eastern MO. Temperatures will be near normal today and then warm several degrees through the weekend.

Fatal Shooting tonight in rural Butler

Bates County Sheriff's Deputies are on the scene of a fatal shooting that just occurred outside the city limits of Butler. 

All parties involved in the incident are in custody and there is no additional threat to the public.

Miami County Kansas Sheriff's Office Seeking Public Assistance

Miami County Kansas Sheriff's Office are asking the public for assistance in identifying the person and or vehicle responsible for the damage created to the Fontana Cemetery located at 383rd Street and Osage Street.

Sometime between Monday September 9th and Wednesday September 11th a vehicle left the roadway causing extensive damage to the fence. The estimated damage is valued at over $5000.

Lady Bears Volleyball falls on the road tonight in Osceola

The Butler Varsity and JV Lady Bears Volleyball Team traveled to Osceola tonight to play the Lady Indians. 

The Lady Bears JV lost in 3 sets and the Varsity lost in 4 sets tonight. This is the first loss of the season for the varsity.

Butler will look to rebound from their first loss if the season as they will host the Hume Lady Hornets on September 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Obituary - Michael Ray McGarraugh

Michael Ray McGarraugh, 70, Milo, MO, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Cox Health in Springfield, MO. Mike was born on January 16, 1954, in Ft. Scott, KS, to Ralph “Jack” and Marilyn (Jackson) McGarraugh.

Mike attended school in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1972. After graduation, he worked as a mechanic for Dahmer Ford Tractor, then opened his own mechanic shop on Barrett Avenue. 

Eventually he built a shop out on the farm where he and Barbara completely remodeled the farmhouse. Mike also worked for Wayne Yakel, smoothing, coating and sealing concrete floors. He was always willing to help anyone who asked.

Mike served as a trustee for the Dover Township for 4 years. He enjoyed going to and participating in truck pulls, deer hunting, fishing, and loved his dogs, Isabelle and Callie.

Mike is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; a sister, Kathy Thomas, Nevada, MO; a brother, H. M. Logan (Terry), Sheldon, MO; several half-sisters; numerous nieces and nephews; and his 2 dogs, Isabelle and Callie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandparents, Estel and Lillian Jackson and Bill and Eda McGarraugh.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Bill Platt officiating. Interment will follow in Milo Cemetery in Milo, MO. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Milo Cemetery in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
